After Marrying Bigshot Vegetable Boss - Chapter 14
The idea of a shotgun wedding wasn’t exactly a proud moment for either family, especially since he and Chu Wang had only been married for a week. As such, only those close to both families were privy to this information.
The expressions of many present froze.
The air seemed to solidify with this statement, lingering for a while before slowly thawing.
However, the tone of surprise carried subtle changes.
“What? Marrying so young!”
“I understand, but isn’t this a bit… too early?”
“It’s too soon!”
Yu Lan typically brushed off such discussions, letting the words wash over him as he prepared to put his headphones back on.
But just as he was about to plug them in, a confident voice cut through the ongoing discussion.
“So what if he’s married? What’s wrong with marrying early?” It was a tall, well-featured young man wearing black-rimmed glasses, carrying a stack of books as he approached.
“What era is this? Why are people still so rigid? Pursuing love and getting married is perfectly normal! It’s not like he’s marrying any of you, so what’s the rush?”
Some people, upon seeing him, weren’t angered by his arrival or his words; instead, they started teasing and joking around.
“Class monitor, why so serious today during our orientation?”
“Yeah, it’s like we’ve never seen you before. Just saying hi, no other meaning.”
Students exchanged words one after another, apparently familiar with this person, and no one really got angry.
Just as it was time for class, the jovial crowd dispersed, and the young man who had spoken earlier approached Yu Lan, putting down his books and sitting beside him.
Yu Lan turned his head to look at him and said, “Thank you.”
The other person waved his hand dismissively. “No problem! I just don’t agree with some viewpoints.”
Having helped him out of the predicament, Yu Lan adopted an attentive demeanor.
The young man looked at Yu Lan and said, “Seriously, I believe love is the foundation of all marriages. A marriage without love, no matter the purpose behind it, is a conspiracy!”
Yu Lan’s hands paused for a moment before he put them down. “Oh, is that so?”
He felt like there was a hidden meaning in the statement.
“Yeah, I’ve seen examples of that around me, so seeing you boldly confess your love, I’m very supportive!” The person spoke encouragingly.
Yu Lan’s expression became quite complicated.
Could it be that he was just using this as a way to deflect from boring conversations?
“I… ” he hesitated, struggling to find the right words.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to tell me. I won’t pry into other people’s private affairs or gossip.” The other person continued speaking with a sense of righteousness.
“… Okay.”
Yu Lan felt that this person, although a bit single-minded, was sincere.
So he didn’t explain in the end.
“My name is Zhong Jiale, I’m the class monitor. Let’s exchange contact information, and I’ll add you to the class group chat. If you need anything in the future, you can just contact me directly.”
Zhong Jiale was even more enthusiastic than Yu Lan had expected. Yu Lan simply mentioned that he had returned to continue his studies after taking a break, and Zhong Jiale eagerly offered to lend him the books and notes from the previous semester to help him catch up on credits.
He then proceeded to tell Yu Lan all sorts of details, scratching his head afterward. “I don’t know why, maybe I just feel a connection with you, that’s why I’ve said so much.”
“Don’t overthink it! We really hit it off!” Zhong Jiale said, “I admire your courage in expressing love!”
Yu Lan: “…”
Back to that topic again.
This friend seemed to be very concerned about marriage freedom.
“By the way, are you a day student?”
As Zhong Jiale brought up the topic, Yu Lan remembered he needed to buy some daily necessities after class. He nodded, “Yeah, is there a shopping mall nearby?”
Although he knew the plot, this world and this city were still unfamiliar to him.
“Yeah, there’s a big shopping district just over a kilometer away,” Zhong Jiale said straightforwardly. “I’m heading there anyway, so why don’t I take you along?”
Yu Lan thought about it and decided it would save him the trouble of finding his way. “Sure.”
–
After class, ignoring the curious gazes still lingering on him, Yu Lan left the classroom with Zhong Jiale.
When they arrived at the location Zhong Jiale had mentioned, Yu Lan surveyed the area in silence for a moment.
What kind of high-end shopping mall was this?
He only now noticed that although Zhong Jiale dressed modestly, upon closer inspection, he was clad in expensive brands from head to toe. Yu Lan had glimpsed the logo on his shoes in Chu Wang’s wardrobe.
However, Zhong Jiale didn’t notice what Yu Lan was thinking and continued to lead the way, introducing each store to him one by one.
Yu Lan thought it was convenient this way; if he bought anything, the store could deliver it directly, saving him the trouble.
But he wasn’t very clear about the concept of expensive items, so he simply followed his preferences and chose a store that seemed to cater to a younger clientele.
He didn’t feel particularly awkward shopping in a luxury store for the first time, and Zhong Jiale, who had nothing else to do, followed him in as a consultant.
“Is your home nearby?” Yu Lan asked.
“Sort of. Mainly because my parents went out to celebrate their wedding anniversary tonight and asked me to eat out.”
Yu Lan nodded without asking further.
Just as he had picked out two items and was about to ask a salesperson about the fitting rooms, he heard a somewhat familiar voice: “Xiao Lan?”
He frowned, feeling that anyone who could call out his name probably wasn’t a good person in the book. So, he raised his eyes and indeed—
Yu Lan saw Yu Ling standing in front of him with a few friends, looking at him with surprise.
Yu Lan: “…”
How could he also be around here?!
He tried to recall the content of the book and remembered that Yu Ling was also studying economics at a nearby university, just across the street from his own school.
Yu Ling stood opposite him, looking strangely at his unexpected presence, but still managed to make some small talk: “Shopping?”
Yu Lan looked at the people beside him, who surrounded Yu Ling like a flock of admirers, apparently here to accompany him shopping.
Of course, since the Yu Ling family didn’t bother to publicize this matter, they treated Yu Ling like a precious gem.
In the eyes of outsiders, he was undoubtedly the pampered young master of the Yu Lan family.
Someone looked at him and curiously asked Yu Ling, “Who is this, your friend?”
“He should be a relative of his family, right?” someone interjected, flattering, “After all, the Yu Lan family has good genes. Otherwise, where would such a good foundation come from?”
Yu Ling’s expression visibly stiffened at this uninformed attempt to curry favor. “…”
Then he forced a smile, “Yes, he’s my brother.”
Yu Lan raised an eyebrow, perhaps because he was in a good mood today or maybe because everyone around him was a stranger, so he simply watched the show and didn’t intend to confront or reveal anything.
Zhong Jiale, on the other hand, didn’t notice anything amiss and followed the gazes of the two men.
Yu Ling was clearly a regular customer, as there were two idle store clerks nearby who quickly greeted him as soon as he entered, “Mr. Yu Ling, we just received some new styles. Let me show you to see if there’s anything you like?”
Yu Ling smiled gently, “Thank you.”
“No trouble at all.” The clerk hurriedly trotted off and soon brought over a cart full of new styles, none of which were displayed outside.
Zhong Jiale heard Yu Ling’s surname and leaned over curiously, whispering to Yu Lan, “Are you really relatives?”
“But I think you’re better looking than him…”
His voice was very soft, but Yu Ling seemed to have heard it. The smile on his lips diminished slightly as he turned to look at Yu Lan, pointing to the cart of new styles, “Xiaolan, see if there’s anything you like in these?”
Yu Lan didn’t hesitate and followed his words, selecting items one by one.
Yu Ling’s friends began to show envy.
“It’s so cool to have you as a relative. I wish I could have the same treatment someday!”
“Being born with such a good surname is really different. I wonder if I have such relatives.”
As Yu Lan finished selecting, Yu Ling also picked out two items after chatting with the store manager for a while.
“Xiaolan, take a look, do you need anything else?” Yu Ling smiled at the store manager and then turned to Yu Lan, “These four items, let’s see how much they are in total…”
“No need, big brother!”
Yu Lan remembered something and suddenly reached into his pocket, ostentatiously pulling out a black and gold card.
He smiled at the store manager, “Wrap up the rest.”
“Charge it to my husband’s card.”
