After Marrying Bigshot Vegetable Boss - Chapter 28
When Yu Lan woke up, the movie was already reaching its climax.
The Black Mountain Demon had long been driven away by the Diamond Sutra, and Ning Caichen was bidding his final farewell to Nie Xiaoqian’s ashes.
He had slept comfortably and was a bit groggy upon waking up. He quickly looked around. “Mr. Chu?”
There was no response in the room. Yu Lan jumped out of bed and walked barefoot to the side of the comatose patient not far away, patting his hand as usual.
Chu Wang apparently hadn’t been paying much attention to the movie either; he hadn’t even glanced at the couple who were already at the parting of life and death, his gaze instead falling on Yu Lan’s bare legs. “Why aren’t you wearing shoes?”
Yu Lan casually replied, “I wanted to wake you up first.” He looked up and saw Chu Wang already in the room, smiling at him, so he withdrew his feet back under the covers.
He thought Chu Wang was upset because he had fallen asleep. “It’s not that I didn’t want to watch with you! It’s just that I’ve seen this movie many times and didn’t mean to fall asleep.”
Unexpectedly, Chu Wang didn’t seem to care about that at all. He just said, “If you’re tired, go back to sleep.”
As Yu Lan was about to lie back down, he paused at Chu Wang’s words and turned his head to look at him.
It wasn’t that he found anything wrong with that statement, but… it was hard to describe. Yu Lan wasn’t sure if it was his own illusion or if Chu Wang had subtly changed just in the span of a movie.
Yu Lan tried hard to recall the plot and descriptions of him in the book. In any case, however he was described as a ruthless antagonist, authoritarian, fierce, cold-blooded…Â
Indeed, Chu Wang, with his body and original temperament, did give people an arrogant and unfeeling impression. However, in his current soul state, he even seemed… gentle?
After all, which fierce antagonist would ask about wearing shoes?
This was different from the image in the book.
However, with Yuling in front, Yu Lan didn’t dwell on this issue much. He just occasionally felt a little worried. If Chu Wang really woke up in the end, would he still follow the established plot?
Because now no one can explain how he could see Chu Wang’s soul.
Yu Lan’s explanation to himself was that this might be a bug caused by his crossing into the book. Anyway, he was nominally the groom of the auspicious marriage, and it was quite reasonable to have some privileges.
So…
Perhaps he suddenly thought of this, and Yu Lan felt uncomfortable not asking: “Mr. Chu.”
“What if one day you wake up and don’t remember anything about this time? What would you do?” He was afraid that he didn’t express it clearly and added, “I mean, being trapped here for a year.”
Chu Wang was taken aback. “You seem to be sure that I will wake up.”
“The doctors say your condition is improving, and we’ve also made new discoveries, haven’t we?” This time, Yu Lan didn’t intend to brush it off, but he couldn’t say he knew what would happen next.
“I haven’t thought about it,” Chu Wang smiled, “I stopped making such unlikely assumptions long ago.”
“But what if?” Yu Lan didn’t give up and continued, “What if you wake up and completely forget about being a spirit…”
The more he said, the more he felt it was possible: “What then?”
“Are you afraid that I’ll forget you?” Chu Wang said.
Chu Wang looked at Yu Lan’s face with obvious hesitation, as if he was really worried about this happening.
Yu Lan thought about it and nodded, “…yes.”
The main concern wasn’t that he would forget himself, Yu Lan thought. If Chu Wang woke up and saw himself as an unfamiliar bride arranged by the family, then…
But when Yu Lan thought of this, he was surprised.
Wasn’t that how it was supposed to be in the first place?
His initial idea was simply to prevent the Chu family from rejecting him, and incidentally accumulate a small fortune for three months later, ensuring that Chu Wang would not end up in a psychiatric hospital as in the book.
But then he unexpectedly found that he could see Chu Wang and communicate with him, so things took a different, better direction. He went to school, made friends, and even had several moments of triumph in front of Yuling.
“Never mind, never mind. I just suddenly thought about it. Just pretend I didn’t ask.” Thinking of this, Yu Lan said.
He must have been too comfortable during this time, which led to such thoughts of taking advantage of the situation.
Yu Lan was not someone who wanted much in the first place. Perhaps it was because everything had been easy these days that he subconsciously feared losing them, feared that they would disappear along with Chu Wang returning to being an unconscious vegetable.
Since it seems Xiyun is on my side now—Yu Lan thought—even if Chu Wang really forgets everything after waking up, Xiyun will still help me. If I decide to leave at that time, she probably won’t stop me.
Yu Lan suddenly turned this thought around.
If placed on the day he first arrived, wouldn’t this be the perfect ending?
Yu Lan straightened out the cause and effect in his mind and felt that the previous question seemed unnecessary.
“I just said it casually. You don’t have to take it seriously…” Yu Lan added, trying to cover up.
He had his own system and knew that the more you desired, the easier it was to lose. So he reflected on himself for a few seconds.
But after thinking like this, he didn’t seem so happy.
Yu Lan adjusted himself with two breaths and was about to speak when Chu Wang, who had been silent until now, spoke.
“No, I won’t.” Chu Wang didn’t know which question this was answering.
Yu Lan wasn’t sure if Chu Wang was saying this situation wouldn’t happen, or something else.
“Don’t be afraid,” Chu Wang said.
“Let’s not talk about whether I’ll wake up or not. If I really forget you…”
Chu Wang chuckled as if mocking himself.
That would be too boring.
Returning to a boring, mechanical life, with no crises but also no moments like now.
Actually, Chu Wang had just thought of several methods or excuses, such as comforting Yu Lan first and then giving him some assurances.
For example, he could remind himself more after waking up, say more about himself to make him believe that they were once acquaintances.
But what good would that do?
Chu Wang thought, if this really happened, if he really woke up and really didn’t remember Yu Lan, according to Yu Lan’s character, he would definitely not persist. He would probably leave after confirming that he had lost the memory of this period, just like when he left the Yu family, without any nostalgia.
Chu Wang found that he couldn’t imagine what expression Yu Lan would have in such a situation. After all, there was nothing about him that made people nostalgic. He might as well ask Xiyun for some money and leave. That would be more straightforward.
He would rather Yu Lan continue to be a carefree little trickster than waste time on an unconscious vegetable person who forgot him.
The movie on the projector finally ended, and the familiar music resumed.
Chu Wang spent half the movie time briefly understanding his thoughts.
After Yu Lan asked a simple question, Chu Wang’s thoughts were disrupted again.
He wasn’t a character in the movie. Nie Xiaoqian in the film could still touch, embrace, and love, but he could only use cinnabar as a medium, touching something unattainable in the human world.
“I won’t forget,” Chu Wang repeated.
It seemed that none of his imaginings allowed for such a situation to occur. He realized that after Yu Lan asked this question, the one truly afraid was himself.
It was as if Yu Lan was the embodiment of his disconnection from the boring world. Before he appeared, he was like an NPC in a network game, an insignificant, emotionless supporting role in the book.
His body couldn’t move, but his soul could grasp the hope that could be touched realistically.

Loved it! I really really hope that he doesn’t forget!
