After Rebirth, Married to a Deadly Enemy - Chapter 6
Liang Chen was Shi Zhen’s deputy and the only one accompanying him today to welcome the bride. Originally, some of their teammates in the squad also wanted to come along, but Shi Zhen had refused. Liang Chen was initially puzzled but later investigated Bai Xiangxing’s situation, which helped him understand.
This wasn’t a wedding; it was quite clear that Bai Xiangxing had been sold off by his family. Furthermore, Bai Xiangxing was originally an Alpha, just like them. Speaking of this, was this considered an AA relationship or an AO relationship? Nevertheless, only an Omega like Bai Xiangxing would dare to get close to their boss. They had thought their boss was destined to be single for life, but unexpectedly, he was the first among them to get married.
Liang Chen was pondering this when he saw his boss walking out with a young man in a white shirt. The young man had exceptionally exquisite features and a captivating charm that left anyone who looked at him enchanted.
Wait, was this their future sister-in-law? Wasn’t their sister-in-law supposed to be an Alpha? This young man was clearly a hundred times more attractive than any Omega Liang Chen had ever seen.
“Liang Chen.”
Liang Chen snapped out of his thoughts and saw his boss looking at him with a stern expression.
“Captain,” Liang Chen quickly straightened up.
“This is my deputy, Liang Chen,” Shi Zhen said with a slightly eased expression as he introduced Bai Xiangxing.
“I’m Bai Xiangxing,” Bai Xiangxing said with a smile, nodding in Liang Chen’s direction.
“Hello, sister-in-law,” Liang Chen saluted enthusiastically.
A beautiful person was a beautiful person, and Bai Xiangxing looked exceptionally charming when he smiled.
Bai Xiangxing’s initially smiling eyes darkened, and he turned to Shi Zhen. “Are you trying to disgust me from the beginning?”
Even though he was mentally prepared, hearing someone call him sister-in-law made Bai Xiangxing uncomfortable. He was a strong Alpha; what was this sister-in-law nonsense?
Shi Zhen, aware of Bai Xiangxing’s misunderstanding, didn’t bother explaining. He simply said, “If you don’t like that title, you can choose another.”
So accommodating?
“Call me Mr. Bai or Young Master Bai,” Bai Xiangxing suggested to Liang Chen.
“Young Master Bai, please get in the car,” Liang Chen immediately changed his address and opened the car door.
Bai Xiangxing nodded in satisfaction and gracefully entered the car. He remained motionless once inside.
Liang Chen was puzzled; why wasn’t he sitting down to let the captain in?
“Why didn’t you close the door?” Bai Xiangxing glanced at Liang Chen, his tone full of displeasure.
Liang Chen responded with an “Oh” and obediently closed the door. After doing so, he realized something was amiss; why had he followed Bai Xiangxing’s command so obediently? It was as if he couldn’t resist.
It must be because the future sister-in-law was too beautiful. As a real Alpha, he couldn’t resist the allure of such a stunning Omega.
In contrast, Shi Zhen remained much calmer. He had already opened the passenger seat door himself and sat down.
Liang Chen felt even more out of place. It seemed as if he and the captain were here not to welcome a bride but to protect the young master of the Bai family. However, since the captain hadn’t said anything, he, a mere deputy, didn’t dare to speak up.
Now that they had picked up Bai Xiangxing, the next step should be to go to the marriage registration office. However, as the car left the Bai family, Liang Chen, feeling overwhelmed by the future sister-in-law’s strong presence, thought he needed to confirm something.
“Captain, where are we going next?” Liang Chen asked.
“Where are we going?” Of course, they were heading to the marriage registration office. However, for some reason, Shi Zhen didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he glanced at someone who had comfortably leaned back in the seat as soon as they got into the car via the rearview mirror.
Bai Xiangxing hadn’t actually fallen asleep, and he heard Liang Chen’s question. When he waited for a while without hearing Shi Zhen’s response, he opened his eyes out of curiosity.
“What’s on your mind?” Shi Zhen asked.
“What’s on my mind?” Bai Xiangxing was puzzled for a moment. “Why, if I decide not to get married, can you agree?”
“While I wouldn’t recommend it, if you’re strongly against it, I won’t force you,” Shi Zhen replied.
After hearing this, not only Bai Xiangxing but also Liang Chen were surprised. Captain, are you serious? You traded a small asteroid for a bride, and now you’re saying it’s okay if he doesn’t want to marry?
Bai Xiangxing perked up and sat upright. “You’re quite accommodating. So, why did you go to all this trouble to arrange this marriage with the Bai family? Playing the good Samaritan?”
As an Omega who had transitioned from an Alpha and an abandoned family member, he was not receiving any support from the Bai family and couldn’t marry a normal Omega. Most people who proposed marriage to him in this situation were those who wanted to humiliate and control him. Completing a mate bond would make an Omega instinctively submit to an Alpha. However, despite his past dominance, these people wanted to break him.
In his previous life, he had escaped, but in this life, he couldn’t run away. This was because he knew that Shi Zhen, despite any personal dislikes, had boundaries and wouldn’t mistreat an Omega in this way. As long as he wasn’t marked, he felt confident he could handle the rest.
“It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement,” Shi Zhen explained.
“Oh? How is it mutually beneficial?”
“I need a partner, and you probably don’t want to marry just anyone and be marked without your consent,” Shi Zhen said.
Hearing the word “marked,” Bai Xiangxing felt a sharp pain in the glands at the back of his neck. He would rather die than let someone mark him completely.
“You need a partner, and with your position in the Shi family, finding an Omega to marry should be easy. Why go to all this trouble to find me?” Bai Xiangxing questioned.
“My pheromones are too aggressive; most Omegas dare not get close to me,” Shi Zhen explained.
“Finding a partner is not easy. You can use the system’s forced matching feature, and if the compatibility is high, pheromones won’t be an issue,” Bai Xiangxing suggested.
“I’m a soldier, and once a match is successful, the other party can’t refuse. I don’t like to force anyone,” Shi Zhen explained.
The Alliance’s matching mechanism was mandatory, but if both parties were dissatisfied with their matched partners, they could pay a fine to terminate the match. However, because a soldier’s pheromones were less stable than those of regular individuals, the Alliance had protective measures in place for soldiers. If a match involved a soldier, the other party couldn’t refuse unless the soldier willingly terminated the match.
“You seem quite chivalrous. Nevertheless, there’s no problem; if the other party is unwilling, you can terminate the match,” Bai Xiangxing suggested.
Shi Zhen suddenly fell silent.
“Young Master Bai, terminating a match can be costly,” Liang Chen interjected, explaining on behalf of his captain.
“It’s only a few hundred thousand stars,” Bai Xiangxing said.
“Several hundred thousand is quite a lot,” Liang Chen responded.
“For you, perhaps, but for the Shi family, it’s like buying a few pieces of clothing,” Bai Xiangxing replied.
A few pieces of clothing? Could it be…
“Young Master Bai? Do you spend several hundred thousand just to buy a few pieces of clothing?” Liang Chen swallowed hard, fearing what he would hear next.
“That’s about right.” His previous clothing had all been custom-made and quite expensive, with a single outfit costing several hundred thousand.
Really?
Liang Chen was amazed and secretly evaluated his captain. He noticed that Shi Zhen was also frowning.
Captain, maybe we shouldn’t go through with this marriage; it’s too expensive.
“I don’t like spending money on such things,” Shi Zhen finally spoke after a while.
Everyone has a different concept of money. For example, he might think it’s worth it to spend several hundred thousand on an outfit, but others might consider it wasteful. However, as long as it’s his own money, he doesn’t like others interfering or criticizing his choices.
Moreover, with Shi Zhen’s imposing aura, it would be extremely difficult to find an Omega who genuinely liked him. Paying a compensation of several hundred thousand stars for rejecting a match once or twice wasn’t much, but if it added up, it could become a substantial sum. The system would also adjust the compensation amount based on the frequency of rejections. If not for his wealth in his previous life, he couldn’t have afforded to buy out his matching rights all at once.
“But marrying into the Bai family must have cost you as well,” Bai Xiangxing pointed out. To marry him off quickly, the Bai family practically resorted to a fire sale, but even in such cases, standing out among so many suitors meant that Shi Zhen must have offered something valuable.
“There’s another reason,” Shi Zhen added.
“What is it?”
“You don’t need to coddle me.”
“?”
“I don’t know how to pamper an Omega,” Shi Zhen admitted. Apart from his own mother and younger brother, he rarely interacted with Omegas. In his perception, Omegas were delicate and could easily cry, making them a troublesome presence to be around. Especially his mother, who was like a waterworks – she would cry at the slightest thing, and whenever she did, his father would have to console her, saying all sorts of disgusting things. He couldn’t imagine himself saying such things.
Bai Xiangxing found this hard to believe. “Are you kidding me?”
“Young Master, we’re not joking. Our leader really can’t pamper Omegas, and he can’t even be close to them. Let me tell you a story: Once, during a mission, we had to rescue two Omegas kidnapped by interstellar pirates. Our leader charged in solo to rescue them, but when the two saved Omegas saw him, they were more terrified than when they were facing the pirates. They refused to leave with him and eventually, I had to pick them up. When I arrived, our leader was cornered, and he couldn’t even look in the direction of the Omegas, which was quite comical, hahaha…”
Liang Chen’s humorous storytelling made Bai Xiangxing burst into laughter.
Bai Xiangxing had experienced something similar in high school. During one evening self-study session, he was walking back with a late-night snack when he encountered Shi Zhen cornering two Omegas against a wall. He couldn’t tolerate seeing Alphas bullying Omegas just because they thought they could. He intervened and ended up in a fight with Shi Zhen. However, after he drove Shi Zhen away, the two Omegas, who had been cornered, tearfully told him that it wasn’t Shi Zhen who was bullying them but two other troublemakers from a different school. Shi Zhen had driven those troublemakers away, and he even offered to accompany the two Omegas back to their dormitory. However, Shi Zhen’s pheromones were too intimidating for them, so they refused to get close. Bai Xiangxing had misunderstood the situation.
Thinking back on it, he felt somewhat embarrassed about the incident, but since he and Shi Zhen had been at odds since they were young, he never apologized. Besides, he never gained any advantage in their fights. At that age, with his proud temperament, he couldn’t admit that he couldn’t beat Shi Zhen.
Shi Zhen was slightly embarrassed by the laughter but continued, “In the military, having a partner stabilizes an Alpha’s psychic power and pheromones, making it easier to achieve military achievements. As for you, you should be looking for a safe place to avoid the forced matches by the Bai family and the system. So, I believe our marriage can be a mutually beneficial arrangement—a win-win situation. What do you think?”
“Sounds good,” Bai Xiangxing readily agreed. After all, he planned to utilize the Shi family’s resources.
Shi Zhen breathed a sigh of relief and turned to Liang Chen, saying, “Let’s head to the marriage registration office.”
Bai Xiangxing also wanted to work in a company under the Shi family’s banner. With his abilities and cooperation from Shi Zhen, overseeing the Shi family’s enterprises shouldn’t be a problem. Although they currently had an agreement for a contract marriage, once he offered the Shi family enough shares and only took what he deserved, Shi Zhen probably wouldn’t refuse. However, he didn’t need to rush this matter. He wasn’t sure about the current situation within the Shi family, and if he stirred up trouble with the marriage, he might end up starting from scratch again.
Once the marriage was official, things would be different. He could take his time and strategize.
