Three days, three days—
Wu Jing buried himself under the blanket, tossing and turning on the bed, gradually wrapping himself into a cocoon.
He had been back for three days.
One moment he was drowsily nestled in someone’s arms, and the next, he woke up to find himself on his own 2.8-meter-wide bed.
Although it was New Year’s, the house was heated, and he was still wearing a short-sleeved shirt and shorts, covered with a blanket of moderate thickness, lying crookedly and playing on his phone.
There was even ice fruit juice made by the maid on the bedside table.
Wu Jing flipped through his phone, checked the time, and confirmed it was exactly the same as when he lost consciousness before.
He had been away for almost half a year, but here, no time had passed at all.
Three days had already gone by.
What about over there?
Would they miss him?
Would they be anxious?
Or was time stopped over there too?
“Knock knock—”
The door was suddenly knocked on.
Wu Jing turned and sat up, trotting to open the door, and peeked out, seeing the familiar pink homewear. He opened his arms and hugged her briefly before letting go. “Mom, don’t you have to go to the office with Dad today?”
The woman in front of him was relatively young, nearly forty, with some fine lines around her eyes, wearing a low ponytail and light makeup. She looked especially gentle and smiled at the boy. “Mom needs to ask you something. After that, you can go.”
Wu Jing’s heart tightened, and he averted his gaze, looking elsewhere. “What’s the matter?”
She patted the back of his hand, holding it tightly, and sat down on the edge of the bed. “Mom heard from the family driver that you’ve been going to the hospital every day for the past three days… Did you catch some illness? Or…”
Wu Jing stood in front of her, lowering his head, unsure of what to say. “I just have a bit of a cold, not really sick.”
His mother looked worried. “Is that so?” She said, “Tell me the truth.”
Wu Jing bit his lip, hesitating for a moment before speaking, “Mom, even though I’ve been seeing a psychiatrist, it’s not for myself—”
His mother spoke at the same time, “Do you know that Mom is having a baby—”
Madam Wu’s expression froze, then she stopped talking.
Wu Jing stared blankly and repeated what his mother said, “Mom’s having a younger brother or sister?”
“What younger brother or sister? We’ll only have you as our child. Mom and Dad have already discussed it. We’ll be going to the hospital for surgery soon.” She then changed her tone and became serious, “But what did you mean by seeing a psychiatrist?”
Wu Jing was at a loss and didn’t know what to say. “It’s not… I was just helping a friend who asked for advice. He… sometimes has mood issues, and I wanted to see how to help him.”
He was silent for a moment.
“Mom… could you and Dad keep the baby? It would make the house livelier with another person.”
“If I’m not around… I mean, when I go to school outside, there would be a younger brother or sister at home with Dad and Mom.”
Wu Jing crouched down, looking up at his mother, and rested his head on her lap, curiously looking at her abdomen hidden under the homewear.
He reached out and poked it with his finger.
In the next moment, he was lightly smacked on the back of his hand.
Wu Jing winced in pain. “Mom!”
Madam Wu said, “What kind of friends are you making? Is he having mental issues?” She frowned in concern, clearly worried that this friend might unintentionally harm her child.
Wu Jing quickly said, “He’s a very good friend of mine. He’s just a bit ill but treats me well. Don’t worry, Mom.”
Madam Wu’s tone softened. “What’s his family situation like? Your aunt has a private hospital and might be able to help with your friend’s situation.”
Wu Jing paused for a moment, stammering, “He should… be richer than us. For now… he can’t come over.”
“Mom, let’s talk about the baby issue.”
He awkwardly tried to change the topic.
Madam Wu paused and said, “I’ll discuss it with your dad. Are you really okay with it, Xiao Jing?” They had a child late in life and always wanted a little girl. If not worried that the newborn might make them neglect their only child, they wouldn’t have hidden the surgery from Wu Jing.
The more people in the family, the more attention would be divided from Wu Jing.
This child had always been obedient since he was little; if he was unhappy, he would just keep it to himself, making it hard not to worry.
Wu Jing immediately shook his head, almost swearing, “Really, I don’t mind!”
Madam Wu sighed deeply, “But I’m worried—”
Wu Jing climbed onto the bed and began to knead his mother’s shoulders. “Mom, don’t worry. As long as it won’t harm your health, I support whatever decision you make!” After kneading her shoulders, he gave her back a gentle pat. “Mom… Can I visit Aunt’s private hospital today? Can you let Aunt know before you leave?”
Madam Wu shook her head and smiled. “Alright, I’ll discuss it with your dad.”
Wu Jing smiled. “Then you go to work, and I’ll head out!” He saw her off, and once the door was closed, he quickly changed into a heavy down jacket and went out.
He soon arrived at the hospital.
It was especially cold early in the morning, and Wu Jing had wrapped himself into a ball. Upon arrival, he received news that his aunt had a surgery to perform early that morning. Out of courtesy, he waited in the rooftop office.
With the air conditioning on indoors and the scent of disinfectant in the air, he gradually fell asleep.
He seemed to have a very long dream,
In which there was someone he missed day and night.
The person seemed to be not doing very well. He saw the incense burners in the room burning heavily, meals were taken away untouched, and only dark medicine and medicinal dishes were continually delivered.
The windows were always shut, and the surroundings were very dark and quiet.
It was as if there was a thick fog in front of his eyes, obscuring everything. At first, he could only see the shadows of unimportant bystanders, like an outsider wandering beside the crowd.
He watched in a daze.
Gradually, his vision became clearer. He seemed to smell the fragrance of floating gold and gold-like scent, almost thick enough to make one sink into it.
Wu Jing saw the corner of a faintly red robe clearly.
Day after day, month after month.
He heard more clearly, feeling groggy and unaware of his location, until he heard a familiar, somewhat cold voice, speaking indifferently, “Bring him over to see me.”
Wu Jing came back to his senses, and the light seemed to brighten in an instant. He hadn’t fully reacted before realizing that this was a horse arena.
What he saw were yellow sands kicked up by horse hooves and a green grassy field in the distance.
His gaze followed an old man covered entirely in a black cloak as he walked slowly forward, accompanied by a guide.
Wu Jing recognized this as an暗卫 (secret guard) who had frequently appeared around Ning Qinghong before.
It was as if he was in a god-like time, watching the time pass by as if it were a show.
The two walked through the horse arena and onto a bamboo path behind it, which slowly extended into the depths of the forest. They finally reached a beautifully constructed bamboo building.
The scent of floating gold and tea wafted from the half-open window.
Wu Jing could only vaguely see a corner of a snow-blue robe and a pale, almost bloodless face, with even the thin lips looking pale, as well as slender fingers holding a tea cup.
He almost immediately wanted to approach,
But he felt no sense of his own body.
Wu Jing watched as the secret guard clasped his hands and said, “This person has already entered the palace to see His Majesty.”
A familiar voice asked softly, “Do you know everything you need to?”
The secret guard replied, “Yes.”
The old man under the cloak said, “The master wants to summon the soul. I took a drop of the dragon’s blood from the fingertip of the emperor of your country. I need to set up a formation and incense, which will take some time.”
Ning Qinghong smiled faintly, “You’re the first to tell me there’s a way. If you boast but can’t deliver…”
His unfinished words were enough to chill the heart.
The old man said, “There is a method, but you are the one most deeply entangled here. If you don’t want to harm anyone, someone else must retrieve the blood. He will receive guidance from the unseen world if he thinks of you.”
Ning Qinghong paused and set down his tea cup. “Bring the knife.” He gestured and then said softly, “Let me see him first.”
“Let’s take a look.”
