It’s winter now, and although there’s no snow outside, the temperature is still very cold. Wu Jing wrapped himself up in a thick white down jacket, paired with fleece-lined beige corduroy sweatpants, and wore a light blue knitted hat.
He originally wanted to find some clothes for Ning Qinghong, but the other man was much taller than him, so nothing fit. Besides, Ning Qinghong had brought his crane cloak, only taking it off due to the warm indoor temperature.
So, Wu Jing sneakily led Ning Qinghong, who had his long black hair down and was draped in his crane cloak and snow-white robe, out of the house. “Brother, wait here at the door. I’ll go check the path outside to see if anyone’s around. We need to take the back route through the small path, where there are no surveillance cameras. Ah… surveillance cameras are devices that can record everything we do and save the footage for everyone to see. Luckily, the driver just took my mom to the office; otherwise, we’d have to avoid him too…”
The young man rambled on and on, talking non-stop.
Wu Jing was a bit nervous but tried to remain calm as he looked around. After making sure no one was around, he turned back to Ning Qinghong and whispered, “Brother, it’s clear.”
He could bring Ning Qinghong home, but there was no way he could explain someone suddenly appearing out of thin air in his house.
Ning Qinghong smiled subtly, narrowing his eyes slightly as he softly praised, “Wuwu is very cautious.”
He slowly walked out, closing the door behind him unhurriedly.
Wu Jing thought he was genuinely being praised and smiled, turning back to grab Ning Qinghong’s hand. “Brother, let’s go?”
Ning Qinghong smiled again and gently said, “Alright, I’ll do whatever Wuwu says, after all, Wuwu is paying to take care of me, right?”
His tone was soft but carried a deeper meaning.
Wu Jing didn’t catch on to the implication and instead felt a bit embarrassed, yet also excited. He took out his phone, ordered a ride, and headed straight to the mall with Ning Qinghong. On the way, he sent a message to his aunt, saying he wanted to consult with the psychologist from last time, mentioning that his friend had arrived this time.
He didn’t wait for a reply, knowing that his aunt was usually busy with surgeries.
After putting his phone down, Wu Jing leaned against the car window and blew a breath of warm air onto it, causing the glass to fog up instantly. He smiled brightly, “Brother, look!”
Ning Qinghong, who had been watching him all along, softly responded with a “Hmm?”
Wu Jing blew on the glass again, making the fog even thicker, and then wiped it away with his palm. “Brother, look, these tall buildings outside are like individual houses stacked on top of each other because there are more people and less land now, and housing prices are high.”
“People usually don’t have to climb stairs to go up and down; there’s something called an elevator inside that can take you up and down several floors in no time.”
“The thing we’re sitting in right now is called a car, an automobile, which I’ve mentioned before. It can travel over a thousand kilometers in a day. There are even more advanced means of transportation like trains, high-speed rail, and airplanes… These modes of transport are now common for most people.”
“And, and, did you notice that there’s no longer any imperial court? It’s an era of equality, where everyone is equal. I’m just an ordinary person, but I live a very happy life.”
“I don’t really have any exceptional skills. I’m still in school, listening to teachers’ lectures. My grades aren’t that great, probably just above average. But as you’ve seen, my family really cares about me, and I have a few good friends.”
“But you might not get a chance to meet them.”
He talked for a long time, with Ning Qinghong listening quietly, occasionally responding. After about twenty minutes, the car finally stopped. When Wu Jing got out, his phone automatically paid for the ride. Just in case, he bent down to the driver and said, “Uncle, we’re just filming a short video, don’t mind us.”
The driver chuckled, “I know, you young folks love this stuff.”
Wu Jing breathed a sigh of relief and said, “Thank you.”
After the car left, Wu Jing quickly ran over to Ning Qinghong, who was standing tall and gracefully waiting for him. Behind the young man, the traffic was busy, horns blaring. In front of them was the bustling, lively city, where everyone’s face was filled with smiles, and the lights of the buildings were dazzling.
Wu Jing threw himself into Ning Qinghong’s arms, stood on tiptoes, and kissed the corner of Ning Qinghong’s lips. “I wonder if Brother likes my world.”
He gave a small, affectionate peck, looking up at Ning Qinghong with eyes full of adoration.
Ning Qinghong lightly placed his long fingers on the back of the young man’s head, as if intending to pull him closer, but stopped himself. His voice was very soft, “Not really.”
Wu Jing hadn’t expected such a direct response and instantly felt dejected.
Ning Qinghong paused before adding, “But if Wuwu won’t be coming back, then I would like it.”
Although Ning Qinghong’s words were already straightforward, Wu Jing still felt that he was being cryptic. After thinking about it for a while without figuring it out, he noticed the flash of a camera in the distance. Realizing how eye-catching Ning Qinghong’s attire was, Wu Jing hurriedly let go of his hand and, lowering his head, tried to hide behind him.
Ning Qinghong gently held his hand, slightly turning his face away as he led Wu Jing forward. He softly asked, “Shall Brother go change his clothes?”
Wu Jing’s face flushed red. “Okay.”
Ning Qinghong took Wu Jing into a clothing store and quickly picked out a few outfits, from inner layers to outerwear, covering everything. The inner layer was a black turtleneck sweater, layered with a slightly loose, beige knitted vest cardigan, similar in color to Wu Jing’s outfit. The buttons were frog buttons, and the edges were embroidered with black patterns.
He paired it with beige but slightly lighter-colored casual pants with subtle vertical stripes, giving off a particularly refined look.
Finally, he chose a long white woolen coat that reached near his knees, highlighting his tall figure and gentle demeanor.
His long black hair was tied loosely with a ribbon provided by the store staff, draping down his back. He smiled slightly and called out warmly, “Wuwu?”
Wu Jing was dazed for quite a while before he finally registered what the staff had just said, “Sir… and this young man, um, are you paying with Alipay or WeChat? We also accept bank cards and cash.”
Ning Qinghong replied, “Online payment.”
The staff member said, “Sir, you can scan this code here. The total for the clothes is 15,400 yuan, plus a 5% service fee of 770 yuan. We also offer a service to have your old clothes dry-cleaned and delivered back to your home with care, since your clothes are quite valuable. The dry-cleaning fee is approximately 1,500 yuan, and the delivery service is 200 yuan. Would you like to consider it?”
Ning Qinghong nodded with a smile, “Yes.”
The staff member’s face lit up with joy, “That will be a total of 17,870 yuan.”
Ning Qinghong called out again, “Wuwu?”
Wu Jing snapped back to reality, “I’ll pay…” He stammered, “I just scan here, right? Okay, done.”
He looked at the nearly 20,000-yuan bill and swallowed nervously.
The staff gave their trademark smile, “We look forward to serving you again.”
Wu Jing, still in a daze, replied, “O-okay, thank you.”
Ning Qinghong leisurely asked, “Where does Wuwu want to take Brother next?”
Wu Jing swallowed again, “To buy… buy a phone, buy a computer.”
He bought the latest model of a domestic phone, which was a bit cheaper but still cost over 10,000 yuan after upgrading all the features.
The laptop, external monitor, dedicated graphics card, color gamut, and other accessories—keyboard and mouse fully upgraded—cost another 20,000 yuan in a flash.
Ning Qinghong naturally didn’t know how to use any of it, but his smile remained unchanged, neither more nor less, as he quietly watched Wu Jing. From start to finish, he didn’t spare a single glance for anything else, only watching as Wu Jing agonized over which one to buy. Eventually, Wu Jing deliberately turned his back to Ning Qinghong, counting on his fingers as he checked the calculator, figuring out how much he’d spent. He even paid an extra hundred yuan for home installation service.
By the time they could eat, Wu Jing was already worn out. It wasn’t until he saw the delicious food that he perked up again, his eyes shining. “Brother, eat this!” He served food to Ning Qinghong, “This fatty beef is so good! You have to dip it in the egg… This is cheese rice cake, and this is cheese corn, and and…”
After the sukiyaki meal, another 500 yuan was gone.
In the afternoon, they still had to go to the hospital for an appointment with an international specialist. Last time, his aunt didn’t let him pay, but this time he couldn’t not pay… plus all the various test fees, medication costs…
Wu Jing kept thinking about it, calculating his little wallet, taking a deep breath, and with a worried expression, he was led to the car by Ning Qinghong.
