When Wu Jing looked up, his whole body froze in place. It took him a while to snap out of it, and he instinctively started to run away. After a couple of steps, he belatedly realized there was no reason for him to run, so he turned back around to face the person at the dining table.
He awkwardly tried to hide his wet feet, as if he had done something wrong, and lowered his head. “Hello.”
His face flushed, and he was quite nervous. “Can you wait for me for a moment?”
The other person smiled slightly. “Of course.”
Like a gust of wind, the omega dashed upstairs and quickly disappeared around the corner of the stairs.
Hurry, hurry, hurry—
Wu Jing was so nervous he hadn’t even gotten a good look at the other person’s face. He only vaguely noticed a tall figure with a calm expression. Thankfully, the tone was gentle, and it didn’t feel like someone difficult to get along with.
In fact, the person exuded a strangely peaceful vibe, as if this calm attitude would apply to anyone, not just him.
Wu Jing rushed upstairs, grabbed a towel, and dried his feet. He looked around and remembered that earlier in the afternoon, he had taken a nap in the living room before heading to the lower floor.
His slippers were still in the living room.
Wu Jing covered his face with his hands in embarrassment. He went to the wardrobe to get a new pair and put them on. After making sure that his shirt and shorts weren’t wet, he cautiously headed back downstairs.
He thought the other person hadn’t noticed, and when he passed through the living room, he discreetly kicked his other pair of slippers under the coffee table.
“The food’s getting cold. Why aren’t you here yet?” The person, still facing away from him, suddenly said.
Wu Jing was so startled that his rabbit ears popped out. In a panic, he covered the extra ears. “O-okay!” He pressed down hard and stuffed his spirit animal back inside, pretending as if nothing had happened as he slowly moved toward the dining room.
With his head lowered, Wu Jing carefully glanced at the person next to him out of the corner of his eye. “Hello, may I ask…where should I sit?”
The other person, who seemed to have just finished freshening up, had long black hair draped down his back and was wearing a white silk robe with a silver crane pattern. Both the hair and the robe were long enough to reach the floor.
He casually gestured with his eyes toward the seat next to him, nodding slightly with a faint smile. “Sit.”
Wu Jing stared blankly at the man for a moment before suddenly snapping out of it. He sat down beside him, his mind wandering as he absentmindedly scooped up a bite of food. The subtle scent of alpha pheromones nearby made him feel a bit ghostly as he ate.
It was a bit awkward. What topic could he start?
Wu Jing picked up a piece of stir-fried carrot and pork, feeling a bit dazed. Although such a tall man was sitting next to him, it didn’t stop him from eating heartily.
The Federation’s food and carrots were just too delicious!
He was so content that he was almost forgetting everything.
As for whether he had any particular feelings toward the Federation, an enemy nation, he absolutely did not. Not only was this war started by the Empire, but he was also a scapegoat. He wasn’t foolish enough to defend those who had wronged him.
Wu Jing ate carefully, not daring to reach for dishes that were too far away, but his chewing was quite enthusiastic, occasionally taking a sip of sweet milk.
“My surname is Ning,” the person next to him suddenly said.
Wu Jing choked and instinctively put down his chopsticks, reflexively reciting as if he were in school, “Mr. Ning, h-hello! My name is Wu Jing, I’m an omega, my pheromones smell like berries, and my spirit animal is a lop-eared rabbit. I don’t have any siblings, but my mom and dad are really nice to me…”
As he continued, his voice gradually trailed off when he heard the other person chuckle.
Ning Qinghong raised an eyebrow and asked, “Is that your introduction to me?”
Wu Jing nodded slightly, then, realizing how embarrassing it was, he wished he could cover his face.
Ning Qinghong remained quiet for a moment. “I think we need to discuss something else.” His voice was soft, almost intimate. “Hello, my omega spouse.”
He lightly tapped his fingers on the table, smiling. “No need to be nervous. Keep eating.” His gaze subtly drifted to the rabbit ears that had popped out in response to his words.
A person’s spirit animal could only be touched by themselves.
Ning Qinghong just watched and smiled. He asked, “Why do you look so young? How old are you? Are you an adult yet?”
Wu Jing’s mind went blank. He instinctively nodded. “I-I’m an adult.”
Ning Qinghong acknowledged that and continued asking, “How long have you studied at the Imperial Academy? Do you need me to hire a tutor for you?”
Wu Jing replied, “Just for a year. I don’t think I need one…”
Ning Qinghong asked, “How long until your next heat?”
Without any hesitation, Wu Jing replied out of muscle memory, “Two weeks.” After answering, he froze, his face turning beet red as he looked incredulously at the man beside him.
Ning Qinghong smiled faintly. “Is it not something I can ask?”
Wu Jing swallowed, his whole body burning up. In a small voice, he said, “N-no, it’s just… isn’t it a bit too fast…”
Ning Qinghong seemed a bit puzzled and sincerely asked, “Is it?” He calmly continued, “Usually, an omega’s heat begins after they come of age, and the cycle depends on their spirit animal.”
“I’ve heard that rabbits go into heat all year round, with cycles ranging from 8 to 15 days, sometimes lasting a month or even half a year.”
“I think I have a responsibility to know when my spouse might have needs, so I can prepare in advance.”
Wu Jing was already completely flustered. If there were any tangible sign, steam would be visible coming out of his head. His soft, floppy rabbit ears were drooping, trembling as if they wanted to cover his blushing face.
His eyes were misty with embarrassment. “I…I…”
Ning Qinghong’s voice was gentle. “Just two weeks left. Time is tight.” He paused, then added apologetically, “I’ve been too busy with meetings this week and neglected you, which has made the timing rushed. I’m sorry.”
Wu Jing was flustered again and instinctively replied, “It’s okay.”
What was he saying it’s okay to? The other person’s questions were practically grounds for legal harassment!!!
Wu Jing tried to distract himself by eating more rice.
Ning Qinghong softly asked, “I’ll cancel some meetings and stay home more to be with you.”
Wu Jing cautiously shook his head, “Y-you can just keep busy with your own work.”
Ning Qinghong paused. “You don’t need the company of your alpha? Should I mark you in advance to prevent you from losing control during your heat?”
Wu Jing shook his head like a drum, “No need, thank you.”
Ning Qinghong, unhurried and calm, asked again, “Do you need my clothes?”
Wu Jing was taken aback. “Your clothes?”
Why would he need his clothes?
Confused, Wu Jing still declined. “No need.”
Ning Qinghong replied with an intrigued “Alright,” then smiled. “Are you sure you don’t need anything?”
For some reason, Wu Jing had a gut feeling that he shouldn’t agree too readily, but he was too embarrassed to think clearly. In a small voice, he said, “Yes, I’m sure I don’t need anything.”
“Thank you, Mr. Ning.”
He even added a final “thank you.”
