- Chapter 33 - Misunderstanding
Pei Yunchuan was still standing up for Yu Nan, criticizing Bei Yuye and his online crush: “Their conversations were disgusting, always calling each other ‘baby’ and sending flirty messages. They even had matching couple avatars. I was wondering why Bei Yuye suddenly changed his avatar to a little dog. The other person’s avatar is a hand throwing a frisbee.”
“Hmm?” Yu Nan felt overwhelmed by the constant twists and turns recently. He could barely keep up.
Wait, wasn’t that the avatar he and Beibei were using?
Pei Yunchuan continued criticizing Bei Yuye: “Did you give him a ring? And that tight shirt? I bet the frisbee avatar guy gave it to him, all suggestive and shady. You can guess what’s going on.”
But after saying that, Pei Yunchuan felt uncomfortable. How could a friend he’d known since childhood be this kind of person?
“I added him with my alternate account,” Yu Nan said, his emotions like a rollercoaster. “That frisbee avatar, I’m using it on my alternate account.”
Doggo was silent for a while before bursting into laughter: “So the person who’s been having those gross chats with Mr. Affectionate is you? Haha!”
Kitty chimed in: “Some people are still young, but their reputation is already ruined.”
“Alright, alright, I confess. Let me off the hook,” Yu Nan muttered.
Having squatted too long, his legs were numb as he shakily stood and walked back inside. He had misunderstood Beibei. He should have known better — Milk Tea had no sense of deduction and wouldn’t have noticed the details.
“Hey, you’re out, but the junior left,” Li Muyang greeted Yu Nan when he came out.
Yu Nan looked at the junior’s bed, and sure enough, it was empty. “What happened?”
Chen Feng’an shook his head: “He lost a little pearl, called the teacher to ask for a leave, and then left.”
Yu Nan went back to the balcony, squatted down, switched to his alternate account, and pulled Beibei out of the blacklist, re-adding him as a friend.
Beibei immediately accepted, sending a tearful voice message: “Why did you delete me?”
What could he say? He read the message and replied dismissively: “It was a mistake.”
Another sobbing voice message followed: “But before your ‘mistake,’ you said you wanted to break up.”
Bei Yuye didn’t even dare to bring up meeting in real life anymore. Why was the senior acting so strange all of a sudden? It had to be because he realized he was his online crush.
Before, he had been smug, confident that he was excellent in every way and wouldn’t disappoint the senior. But reality had slapped him hard. Now that the senior had added him back, did it mean he was reluctant to let him go?
Yu Nan knew he had misunderstood, so he patiently sent a voice message to calm him down: “I lost a game of Truth or Dare. I’m sorry, Beibei.”
“Sob… but you still shouldn’t have deleted me…”
“Hey, young man, look forward in life.”
Yu Nan asked: “Who’s that talking?”
“A kind driver… sob.”
Yu Nan pretended to be clueless: “Aren’t you in the dorm right now?”
“You broke up with me, so I felt sad… I wanted to go home and cry alone…”
The pitiful, choked-up voice made Yu Nan feel terrible. He had never seen the junior behave intimately with others, nor did he chat late into the night with anyone. Even on his days off, the junior’s time was all accounted for.
“Beibei, I’m sorry,” Yu Nan apologized sincerely.
“Sob… Driver, turn around, back to school.”
Yu Nan opened a video call. The balcony was dark and safe, concealing his face, and he knew Beibei couldn’t recognize his voice.
“Let me see you,” Yu Nan said gently.
This time, Bei Yuye put his face in the frame. Yu Nan was caught off guard by the sight of his junior’s face and wasn’t used to it.
“Your nose is all red. Wipe your tears.” The face on the screen had deep-set eyes, a straight nose, thin lips, and tears sliding down his cheeks. Yu Nan reached towards the screen, feeling like Beibei was seducing him, crying so pitifully.
Bei Yuye quickly wiped his tears as instructed, still sounding upset: “Am I ugly?”
“Not at all, you’re very handsome,” Yu Nan said honestly.
Bei Yuye looked like he was about to cry again: “Then why won’t you meet me in real life?”
Yu Nan was torn. He just wanted an online romance, not a real-life meeting. But fine, he thought, let’s meet once and clear things up.
“Alright, let’s meet. How about this Saturday?” Yu Nan exhaled, not realizing his voice was trembling.
Bei Yuye softly replied, “Okay.”
“Nannan, I’m almost at the school,” Bei Yuye said, suddenly cheerful, even showing Yu Nan the view outside.
Yu Nan said: “Okay, be good and don’t cry anymore.”
“I’m back at school now.” In the dim light, Bei Yuye’s fair skin seemed even paler, his face flushed from crying. The sight of him, so obedient yet seductive, stirred something in Yu Nan.
After confirming Beibei had arrived, Yu Nan ended the video call: “I’m going to sleep now.”
He crawled back into bed, his legs still numb, and soon after, Bei Yuye returned to the dorm.
“Why are you back? Didn’t you take leave?” Li Muyang asked.
Bei Yuye’s voice was still nasally, but his excitement was clear: “Hehe, it’s all sorted out.”
Having cried so much, he decided to take another shower. With Nannan still in the dorm, he started planning something mischievous.
When he came out of the bathroom, he didn’t bother wearing a shirt, water droplets sliding down from his chin to his shoulders. The cool air hit him as he opened the bathroom door, sending chills through his body.
But he was determined. He tightened his muscles and casually sat down, drying his hair.
“Junior, those abs are impressive,” Chen Feng’an gave him a thumbs-up.
Li Muyang, always observant, noticed something: “Do you have a tattoo?”
Bei Yuye immediately stood up and showed off: “It’s my crush’s initials.”
“No way, you got something like that?” Li Muyang said in disbelief. The junior seemed so proper, not the type to get a tattoo for a crush.
“He said my V-line was sexy.” Thinking about meeting his crush on Saturday, Bei Yuye boasted even more: “We’re really close. I’m planning to get another tattoo on my chest since he said he likes chest muscles.”
Li Muyang burst out laughing: “You really don’t need to share those details with us. We’re fine hearing it, but Nannan’s still just a kid.”
Yu Nan, who had a fondness for abs, chimed in: “Yeah, no need to spell it out.”
Milk Tea asked, “So, how are things with you two now?”
Yu Nan replied, “Meeting on Saturday and then breaking up.”
Kitty added, “I’ve already booked my high-speed train ticket. See you Saturday.”
Watch the Sword: “October 6th, I’ll officially be an adult, so I’m booking mine as well.”
What was supposed to be Yu Nan meeting his online crush had now turned into a whole group outing to watch the show. He no longer had the energy to think about it—he would just take it one step at a time.
This week, Beibei was particularly clingy, perhaps because he had already shown his face. He would start video calls at random times—during meals, while walking to class, and even after evening study sessions.
Yu Nan’s heart was all over the place these past few days, and he dreaded Saturday. The pressure of the upcoming meeting even affected his sleep, making him restless at night.
Yu Yu: “I’m terrified of meeting in real life. I feel like agreeing to it in the first place was a mistake. How am I supposed to stay comfortable in the dorm after breaking up?”
Kitty: “@Watch the Sword is going too, right? If you really don’t want to meet, just have him take your place.”
Yu Nan saw a glimmer of hope and quickly @Watch the Sword: “Please meet him for me. I’ll be forever grateful.”
Watch the Sword: “I can cosplay as your adult high school boyfriend, but I’m not going to pretend to be you.”
Yu Nan replied: “Then I’m the one with the bad reputation.”
Milk Tea: “Hasn’t he asked you about the whole meeting in person thing? When I told him, I mentioned that you were also planning to meet your online crush.”
Yu Nan typed: “Nope, he hasn’t asked.”
Milk Tea: “You’d think he’d ask you for advice, right? You’re both in online relationships, and you’re about to meet your crush while he’s still pleading with his.”
Kitty: “Just wear a skirt when you meet him and tell him you’re actually a girl. Afterward, apologize, and you can both part ways peacefully.”
Yu Nan, feeling ashamed, typed: “We’ve already done video calls.”
Kitty scolded him: “How do you have no sense of online safety?”
Dreams are everything added: “This is getting more and more interesting. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Yu Nan, on the verge of tears, thought it was anything but fun.
As Beibei’s mood seemed to improve day by day, always smiling, his mood worsened in direct proportion, weighed down by worry.
The immense pressure eventually pushed him to send a message to Beibei: “Something came up on Saturday, I can’t meet you.”
Beibei’s face visibly fell: “Huh? Why?”
Yu Nan quickly made up an excuse: “A friend is coming to visit, and we’ve already made plans for Saturday. I’m really sorry, Beibei. Let’s push it to next week.”
After sending that, Yu Nan felt an immediate sense of relief—so much for bottling things up inside.
He then went to the group chat to beg: “Please, someone take my place for the meeting. I can’t do it.”
Watch the Sword: “Nope, not me. Pass.”
Dreams are everything : “You guys have done video calls already, I’m out.”
Kitty came up with a new plan: “What about Milk Tea? @Dreams are everything start crafting the storyline.”
Dreams are everything was quick with the plot: “Milk Tea has admired his friend for a long time. Unable to bear the loneliness any longer, he used an alternate account to get his friend’s contact info. They did all sorts of bad things on video, but Milk Tea wasn’t afraid of getting caught, because… he never shows his face.”
Yu Nan @Milk Tea: “That makes total sense. It even explains why you don’t want to meet in person.”
Milk Tea: “??? How did this suddenly become me not wanting to meet in person? Stop projecting so quickly.”
On Friday night, the junior unexpectedly stayed in the dorm. In the middle of the night, Yu Nan could hear the junior sobbing, but he tried to drown it out by playing games.
“Junior, what’s wrong?” Yu Nan couldn’t take it anymore and tried to act like a caring senior.
Bei Yuye immediately stopped crying—so fast that Yu Nan thought he had been faking it.
“My online crush doesn’t want to meet in person. Senior, why do you think that happens?”
Yu Nan pursed his lips, a lightbulb going off in his head: “Hmm… maybe they’re hiding something from you and are afraid of being found out.”
“Huh? What could they be hiding?”
“Maybe… they’re a girl?” He lowered his voice mysteriously.
