- Chapter 40 - Haunted house
Can Yu Nan post about Bei Yuye on Moments? Of course! Because all the contacts on his alternate account are online friends. Posting something visible only to Bei Yuye would be completely fine.
Suddenly, he thought that Bei Yuye had added him using his alternate account too, so if they posted about each other, wouldn’t they be deceiving each other?
After that, Bei Yuye took a flurry of photos, determined to create a stunning nine-grid layout for his Moments, and he wanted only himself and his beloved Nan Nan in the pictures.
Yu Nan didn’t have a single photo of himself on his phone; he wasn’t fond of taking pictures. Today, however, Bei Yuye had captured quite a few photos of him over the years.
Yu Nan never made eye contact with people while walking. Quite literally, when he saw someone in his line of sight, he would zone out, making everything blurry and indistinct, allowing him to walk confidently without looking away.
He was introverted and shy, so he could only find ways to disguise himself.
He had thought the line for the roller coaster was long enough, but he didn’t expect the line for the haunted house to be even longer. They waited a full hour, and when they turned the corner to enter, they found themselves in another waiting area packed with people.
What they thought was the end was actually just the beginning!
After waiting an hour, turning back now would be too frustrating to swallow.
Another half hour passed, and when they finally entered this new room, it was still packed with people. Yu Nan’s mood fluctuated; he didn’t have the motivation to continue waiting in a line that seemed endless, but turning back felt just as painful after standing in line for an hour and a half.
Doggo leaned forward to scout the area: “I’ll go check if there are more rooms inside.”
“I really like that guy. It was back in middle school; I was first in our grade, and he was second. He often came to my class to ask me questions,” Watch the sword reminiscing about his crush.
“That sounds lovely, but during the second math mock exam, he just couldn’t understand the last big question. I got so frustrated that I lost interest in him afterward.”
Yu Nan pulled out his phone to pass the time.
In the game, their alliance team originally had a limit of five members, so they had created two separate teams—one with four people and one with three. Only after a year did the game increase the limit for alliances, allowing them to merge.
Kitty was the last one to join the alliance. During the first summer the game was launched, they played non-stop day and night, logging off around two or three in the morning and immediately jumping back online when they woke up.
Later on, Kitty got busier; she had school and work. She often lamented in the group about having to go to work and vented about various colleague-related issues.
At first, Yu Nan thought it was due to family reasons, but her gaming account was anything but dull. Every new event, she and Milk Tea were the first to spend money to scout ahead, providing the best recommendations for in-game purchases.
Milk Tea was flashy with his spending, while Kitty was more understated.
Yu Nan couldn’t understand, but he didn’t want to dwell on it; he was just glad that she was always lively in the group.
“There’s still one more room inside,” Doggo reported, squeezing through the crowd.
Pei Yunchuan raised his hand to speak: “Report, I’m hungry.”
Everyone exchanged smiles; what else could they do? They could only go out to eat and fight again another day.
Yu Nan had a bowl of extremely bland noodles, but it was acceptable; his greatest strength was that he wasn’t picky about food.
Kitty carefully lifted a slice of beef from his noodles, noting how thinly the chef had sliced it: “Forty-five bucks for four slices of beef. Doggo, am I being too extravagant?”
“Nannan, do you want a chicken leg?” Bei Yuye asked as he quickly deboned a chicken leg for him.
Yu Nan’s noodles looked similar to Bei Yuye’s—just one pitiful chicken leg and two pieces of green vegetables atop a large bowl, making it look even more miserable.
Pei Yunchuan chimed in: “People like chicken legs too, you know.”
Once Bei Yuye heard that, he immediately placed the deboned meat into Yu Nan’s bowl: “I’ve already removed the bones, so Nan Nan only needs to open his mouth to eat.”
Pei Yunchuan began picking through the scant meat in his bowl, singing as he sorted: “There’s always someone busy picking through the meat…”
“You all have military training tomorrow, right?” Yu Nan asked.
Doggo was puzzled: “What? Aren’t you starting military training right after school?”
Yu Nan laughed and replied, “Our school has always had military training after National Day.”
Pei Yunchuan performed a perfect salute and confidently declared, “I’m a good candidate; the instructor assigned to our class is lucky.”
Doggo smiled but said nothing, hoping Pei Yunchuan would still have that same confidence to message the group tomorrow saying he’s a good candidate.
“Will I still be liked by Nan Nan if I get tanned from military training tomorrow?” Bei Yuye asked worriedly. After all, it seemed like his senior didn’t have much fondness for his face, and what if he got darker and was even less liked?
Earlier, when they video-called, Nan Nan praised him, saying he resembled a white chocolate candy and that he liked his fair skin, which would turn red upon being pinched.
“I’d still like you even if you turned into a little black dog,” Yu Nan reassured him.
In the afternoon, they queued up again for the haunted house, waiting for two hours. Once inside, they found it quite boring; they exited in less than ten minutes. Standing outside in the bright sun, they could only sigh about the good weather and their foolishness.
Bei Yuye finally finished editing his Moments post, sending it out. It was a nine-grid photo collage featuring only Nan Nan, captioned: “I’m a little black dog, and he loves me.”
He held his phone close, cherishing the moment. For the first time, he experienced the beauty of capturing memories through photos. From now on, he would always take pictures of Nan Nan, recording every moment they shared.
Pei Yunchuan was the first to like the post, commenting: “Does he only love you if you’re a dog?”
Yu Nan joined in on the fun, replying: “My cute little puppy.”
Upon seeing Yu Nan’s comment, Bei Yuye quickly responded: “Yes, I’m your cute little puppy.”
Pei Yunchuan scrolled through the comments and asked, “Where’s Nannan’s comment? I didn’t see it.”
Yu Nan cleared his throat, and Pei Yunchuan immediately remembered that Yu Nan had added Bei Yuye using an alternate account. He nodded knowingly: “Oh, I see it now! His comment is truly impressive.”
Doggo and the others had train tickets for around six or seven in the evening. Since they had exited the haunted house late, they decided that the last attraction they would enjoy was the Ferris wheel.
Bei Yuye quickly grabbed his phone, planning to recite some sweet nothings at the top of the Ferris wheel, hoping to charm Nan Nan and seal it with a kiss.
As the evening sun set, the sky was beautifully painted with layers of pink and purple clouds, with soft light casting a warm glow on the earth below.
Inside the Ferris wheel cabin, Yu Nan and Bei Yuye sat facing each other. It was rare to see Bei Yuye sitting so upright in front of him, and Yu Nan felt a bit out of place.
The buildings below gradually blurred from clear to hazy. The cabin had a fully transparent design, providing a stunning view that made Yu Nan tremble.
“Bei Bei, this seems scarier than the roller coaster,” Yu Nan said, shivering.
Bei Yuye tightly closed his eyes and nodded.
Yu Nan had never been on a Ferris wheel before, and perhaps because of the numerous romantic tales surrounding it, he instinctively forgot that the Ferris wheel’s highest point was even higher than that of a roller coaster.
He held Bei Yuye’s hand tightly, feeling a wave of dizziness at the thought of the height beneath them.
Yu Nan was a coward, and so was Bei Yuye.
“Nan Nan, do you know what the difference is between you and the stars?” Bei Yuye asked.
Yu Nan admired him for still being able to say such cheesy lines at that moment: “I’m in your heart.”
“After meeting you, I want to become a certain kind of person.”
Could someone really say those kinds of things to their partner? Shouldn’t these words be reserved for friends? The key was that Bei Yuye was saying it with such seriousness, sounding like a little old man who had just gotten online.
“To become mine, I understand, Bei Bei,” Yu Nan couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Do you know which drink is the most intoxicating?”
Yu Nan couldn’t resist saying, “The forever and ever with you. Bei Bei, stop talking.”
“Nannan, how are you so amazing? How do you know everything? You’re so awesome!”
Bei Yuye asked, “Are your eyes closed now, Nannan?”
Yu Nan was planning to tease Bei Yuye: “Of course they’re open; it’s you who has had your eyes closed the whole time.”
Bei Yuye insisted, “My eyes have been open! Closing my eyes means I’m a little dog.”
Yu Nan tried hard to open his eyes and saw that Bei Yuye was indeed keeping his eyes shut. He reached out to take a photo: “You need to open your eyes!”
Because Bei Yuye had been looking down with his eyes closed, when he finally opened them, the first thing he saw was the high ground beneath them, prompting him to exclaim, “Nannan! So high!”
As the Ferris wheel reached its highest point, a wave of fear washed over Yu Nan, and he felt his body go weak.
At the peak, the two embraced tightly, tears flowing, their hearts pounding wildly against the layers of their clothing. This moment on the Ferris wheel felt endless.
