Episode 115: Blue Flam

Seneca and the others were watching Xenon and Pheripatos sealing the “Gate” through Maior’s 【Shared Vision】 .

There are many skills suited for scouting, but the reason 【Detection】  is so valued is because of the existence of 【Shared Vision】 . Seneca and the others were also benefiting from Maior’s skill, allowing them to witness a top-level technique.

“If it ends with this, that’d be great, but I doubt it’ll be that simple.”

“I’ve never seen a ‘Gate’ that massive before. The magic density seems extremely high too—wouldn’t be surprising if something happened.”

Attalos and Rentulus spoke with concern.

When it came time for 【Detection】, Maior, under Attalos’s direction, performed a thorough search. While some moderately strong monsters continued to appear, none of them posed a significant threat, and time simply passed.

After a while, the high-ranked adventurers who had been hunting large monsters began shifting their targets. Rather than dealing with the slightly stronger monsters deeper in, they started subjugating the relatively weaker ones scattered around the outskirts.

That was because such monsters were more numerous and could cause more damage once they left the Great Forest. Now that the “Gate” was closed, the priority had changed.

Even so, Attalos and the others remained at their hiding post. It was slightly removed from the center, but close enough to respond quickly should anything happen.

After several rounds of 【Detection】  following Xenon and Pheripatos’s departure, Seneca spoke.

“Attalos-san, earlier Maior mentioned the magic density still hasn’t dropped. Is there a possibility that another subspace could appear somewhere?”

“That’s possible. The principle behind a ‘Gate’ forming from a dense magic vortex still isn’t well understood.”

“In that case, how about we investigate to see if there are any small subspaces? We might discover something else in the process too.”

“…Not a bad idea. If we can detect a subspace, there’s a chance we’ll also be able to spot distortions or tears in space. Maior, what do you think?”

“Well, I don’t know much about space-related phenomena, but now that the ‘Gate’ has closed, the distribution of magic pools might change. So I agree with heading out to investigate.”

Hearing that, Rentulus nodded in agreement.

“Gaia, Plautia. List anything—no matter how small—that might be a potential concern.”

The two quietly began to think.

Plautia was the first to speak.

“Sensei, how many adventurers can detect subspace?”

“Almost none, really. Only those with space-type skills like Xenon-shishou or high-level detection-type ability users. I’ve heard of an adventurer with 【Detection】  Level 4 who could do it, but it’s extremely rare.”

“Then, can we assume that among the adventurers currently in the Great Forest, Maior-chan is the only one capable of detecting subspace?”

“…Yeah. It’d be best to operate under that assumption.”

Rentulus then asked Plautia.

“So we should recognize that there are things only Maior might be able to perceive?”

“Yes, exactly. And don’t forget, Maior-chan also has 【Trajectory】 and 【Foresight】.”

Plautia answered firmly and continued.

“This isn’t a concern per se, more of a matter of mindset, but rather than focusing only on subspace detection, I think we should shift our perspective to finding things that other parties wouldn’t be able to uncover. Seneca-chan and Gaia-chan each have their own strengths too.”

“And so does Plautia.”

Seneca added with a smile as she looked at Attalos.

“Understood. Let’s reconfirm what each of us can do. Gaia, how about you?”

“I don’t think choosing not to explore is an option, but I do want to compare the risks of exploring versus not exploring. I feel like how we approach this will change depending on that.”

“…So you’re saying we shouldn’t be overly optimistic. There’s a chance that investigating might worsen the situation—or that we might overlook the true cause?”

“Yes, exactly. For example, even with 【Detection】, there’s a difference in risk between doing it from here while in hiding, and moving closer for a more detailed investigation.”

Attalos listened to Gaia’s thoughts while nodding repeatedly, and the discussion continued from there.

“Well then, I think we’ve said all we needed to say.”

After everyone had shared their opinions and discussed thoroughly, Attalos brought the conversation to a close.

“From here on out, we’ll be traveling to various locations while using 【Detection】. Let’s split into smaller teams and shift our focuses accordingly.”

The other five listened intently.

“Maior and I will focus on subspace. With the two of us watching, we should be able to figure out a fair bit. Rentulus and Plautia, I want you two to focus on vegetation and signs of monsters. That should help reduce the chances of missing anything.”

Maior, Rentulus, and Plautia all nodded deeply.

“Gaia, I want you to maintain a broader perspective. The rest of us are bound to get caught up in the details, so we need someone to consolidate the information as a whole.”

“And what about me?”

“Seneca, use your instincts freely. You can fixate on something specific or think in general terms—either is fine. Just speak up whenever you notice anything.”

The five looked at Seneca with eyes full of trust.

Seneca didn’t quite understand why they looked at her that way, but she could tell they were relying on her.

Not long after Xenon and Pheripatos sealed the “Gate,” Seneca and the others finally began to move.

Even while devoting mental energy to analyzing the results of their party’s exploration, Seneca kept thinking about “space” in a corner of her mind.

For example, subspace.

According to something Gaia mentioned along the way, distortions in space or subspaces, even if they form, are extremely unstable. However, the “Gate” seemed to be in such a stable state that it required a platinum-ranked adventurer like Xenon to go all-out just to close it.

Gaia’s interpretation was that the stability might be influenced by the density of magical energy and the size of the “Gate,” but there was no conclusive proof.

Seneca was capable of using a skill called “Sewing the Air.”

From the first time she used it, Seneca had tried the skill repeatedly, eventually realizing that the more magic she infused into it, the faster her movement became. Naturally, that led her to wonder if the effect had a limit.

Together with Gaia, Seneca carefully investigated the relationship between the amount of magic used and her speed.

They eventually discovered that only when a certain threshold of magical energy was used did her movement become drastically faster.

Seneca and Gaia thought hard about what was happening. They spent days and days on the question, only to arrive at something surprisingly simple.

In the end, it came down to Seneca’s own perception.

Seneca had been seeing space and the atmosphere as—

“Attalos-san!”

Just as Seneca was deep in thought about “space,” Maior’s sharp voice rang out.

Following Maior’s voice, they turned to look at Attalos—where suddenly, a pale blue flame had appeared, floating in midair.
