I Will Be Unrivaled With The Skill [Sewing]! They Said It Was A Bad Skill, But With Effort, I will Make It A Hit~ - Chapter 117
Episode117: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment
While Gaia was preparing her magic, Attalos was blocking the gargoyle’s attacks.
He was giving it his all to draw the enemy’s attention because he was confident that if Gaia’s spell hit, it would bring the enemy down.
Gaia had reached the point where she could cast her full-power magic three times a day. If one was to be saved for retreat, that left two shots she could fire at the enemy.
Attalos’s seasoned instincts told him that this enemy was the root cause of the chaos. If possible, he wanted to end it with this attack.
Attalos felt that this gargoyle was strong even in close combat. Its ability to open subspaces was troublesome, but just as much, its raw combat prowess was high.
There weren’t many monsters that could fight well in close quarters while floating in midair. As a result, the rhythm of battle was quite unique, and attacks would sometimes come from completely unexpected angles.
Seneca likely wasn’t used to this. She couldn’t fight with her usual boldness and was being forced into a stifling battle. She weaved through the air to deliver three-dimensional attacks, but that kind of technique was the enemy’s specialty.
“I’m ready!”
Rentulus shouted in a loud voice.
Attalos and Seneca had successfully bought enough time.
“Go! Shield Sphere!”
Rentulus launched eight Shield Spheres toward the gargoyle.
Spinning at high speed, Rentulus’s shield sphere closed in on the enemy. Timing the moment the gargoyle tried to dodge, he activated a strong gravitational pull on the sphere.
With a dull thump, all eight Shield Spheres stuck to the gargoyle’s upper body. The impact left the gargoyle momentarily flustered.
Rentulus didn’t miss that opening and unleashed his next move.
“Take this! 【Gravity】!!”
With a deep, thrumming sound, a gravitational field surged forth and crashed into the gargoyle. Helpless, the monster was dragged to the ground, leaving itself wide open.
“Gaia!”
Attalos signaled Gaia.
If they were going to attack, now was the time.
Rentulus was almost certain the battle would end with Gaia’s spell. But he had lost count of how many times he’d thought victory was assured only to be thrown into crisis. So he didn’t let his guard down and kept a close eye on the gargoyle, ready for anything.
“Firing!!!”
Gaia’s noble cry echoed across the battlefield.
It was the first time Rentulus had seen Gaia’s magic.
Just as he thought to etch that spell into his memory, he noticed the gargoyle twist its face into a grotesque, grinning sneer.
“Everyone, stay sharp!!!”
Rentulus shouted just as Gaia unleashed her supreme artillery magic.
The spell shot forth in a beautiful, shining beam—only to be swallowed up by a subspace the gargoyle suddenly opened, banished to some far-off dimension.
“Protect Gaia!!!”
Up until now, the gargoyle had only created one subspace at a time, but now it summoned four simultaneously. One for defense, one aimed at Attalos, and two targeting Gaia.
When Rentulus realized Gaia was being targeted, cold sweat trickled down his back—but Maior had already begun countermeasures, having sensed the abnormal magical energy.
“Plautia! Two incoming!”
Maior said as she channeled magic into her broad broadsword. Plautia, too, extracted paralytic poison from the plant hidden in her dagger’s hilt and let it drip onto the blade.
Maior had learned more than a few techniques from Attalos. So even when a sudden burst of blue fire erupted from a nearby subspace, she remained calm.
Her skill’s vision showed the blue fire clearly. At first glance, the flames looked large, but they were merely flickering. The core was small—so as long as it didn’t touch her, Maior judged she could handle it.
She reinforced her sword with magic, then struck out with full force toward the blue fire. The otherworldly flame was repelled, its momentum vanishing as it dissipated.
“Don’t underestimate me.”
Maior spat at the blue fire.
However, since the defensive technique Magical Defense was something she wasn’t used to, it had been a gamble—and deep down, she was surprised it worked.
Beside her, Plautia had seemingly neutralized a cat-like monster that had emerged from the other subspace with her poisoned blade.
Though Gaia had been shaken when her artillery magic was swallowed by the subspace, she quickly pulled herself together and shifted into a battle support stance.
◆
The gargoyle’s skill was to open subspaces. From those subspaces, it could unleash fire or summon monsters—but conversely, it could also absorb incoming attacks. It was an exceptional skill, useful both offensively and defensively.
Now, the gargoyle was manipulating five such subspaces. And it wasn’t limited to just blue fire. Unidentifiable things like violet ice and black rock came flying out one after another.
The only monster it seemed able to summon instantly was the two-headed cat, but with a bit of buildup, creatures like a black sheep with matted fur or a verdant green magical bird would come flying out.
It was far too much for just three people to handle. Rentulus was barely managing to defend using the information from 【Shared Vision】, but it wouldn’t be strange if the balance collapsed from just a single misstep.
Attalos coordinated with Seneca to keep the gargoyle in check, focusing on reducing the ever-increasing number of monsters.
The situation clearly favored the gargoyle. With Gaia and the others supporting from the rear, they could regain some ground, but unless the tide of battle was overturned, victory was out of reach.
Seneca was cutting down monster after monster with her brilliant swordsmanship, but the gargoyle kept interfering, preventing her from fully demonstrating her abilities.
She moved as if sewing through the air, threading through the gaps in the dazzling barrage of enemy attacks to strike back. Sometimes she created footing with her pins, sometimes she used them to pin the enemy in place. She tried to pin down the gargoyle’s shadow and strike—but was countered by strange magic pouring out of a subspace.
To be honest, Seneca couldn’t envision victory. Even if the gargoyle didn’t have its subspace ability, it might still have taken three of them just to bring it down.
Most of all, its body was hard. Half-hearted attacks didn’t get through, and the power behind its fists was immense. Taking one head-on would easily break bones.
Seneca wasn’t panicking. But the feeling she usually had in tough situations—“We’ll manage somehow”—wasn’t there this time.
Instead, what welled up inside her was a resignation-like sense that if they kept fighting like this, they’d all just die in order.
That’s why she felt they needed to make a bold move somewhere. That was what Seneca thought.
Of course, Attalos and Rentulus were thinking the same thing. The two of them knew that the longer the battle dragged on, the worse it would get—especially since the gargoyle was tapping into a rich source of magical energy spilling from those small “doors.” More than anything, their veteran instincts were screaming warnings.
As the three frontliners struggled and the three in the rear offered what little support they could, thoughts of “defeat” and “death” began creeping into the minds of all six.
And then, one man moved, determined to forcefully change the flow of battle.
That man was Rentulus.
Rentulus held out a hand to stop Attalos, who had been about to move at the same time, then took a heavy step forward and declared grandly:
“Hey, Attalos.
You back off for a bit.
From the day I picked up this shield, I decided I’d be the first one in the party to die.
…Been a lot of failed tries, and I’ve ended up living longer than I should’ve.
But today, I’m finally keeping that promise.
I don’t want to see another one of our comrades die.
That’s why I’m using my trump card.
You all better watch closely.
This is my once-in-a-lifetime gamble!
【Mighty Flair】!!!!”
The moment Rentulus activated his sub-skill, his entire body began to shine with a yellow light.
