Volume 12: The Demon Realm Arc
Episode 125. The Demon Realm
Beneath a red sky, Seneca and Lucius walked together.
While the Demon Realm didn’t have clear distinctions between day and night like the world they came from, there was still a rhythm to the light—shifting between dim brightness and darkness.
The temperature had remained stable so far. The air was slightly warm, but not enough to be considered hot or cold.
The Demon Realm was filled with a unique type of magical energy, and Seneca found it unsettling.
It was a barren land. Occasionally, something resembling a plant would be growing, but it looked more like a branch jammed directly into the ground.
If there was something resembling a large plant, it was better to assume it had turned into a monster.
Seneca listened to Lucius explain what he knew about the Demon Realm.
He had said that, as part of a saint’s education, he’d been made to study the Demon Realm extensively.
Thanks to that, they were able to survive—barely.
“Water…” Lucius said.
His eyes were fixed on a puddle ahead, shimmering with a strange color somewhere between red and blue.
“I read that it’s safe to drink, but just in case, I’ll purify it first.”
Lucius held his hand over the puddle and cast Holy Magic. Pale blue-white magic sprinkled down onto the water, lightening its color just a bit.
“This should be fine now.”
Even though Lucius said that, his face was a little stiff. He knew in his head it was safe, but the weird color still made him uneasy.
“Wanna drink it together? Like, one-two-go?”
Seneca scooped the red-blue water into her hands. It was honestly lukewarm.
Seeing her do that, Lucius followed suit.
“One, two…”
Gulp.
Even though the water was lukewarm, it was shockingly delicious as it slid down their throats.
“So good…”
“Really tasty.”
The two of them kept scooping water and drinking, their thirst finally being quenched.
“It’s so good it makes you wonder if there’s something weird in it. Maybe it’s because of the magic in it?”
“Magic makes things taste better?”
“Some people say that, yeah.”
“Huh, interesting.”
They talked in slow, relaxed voices.
“If only we could take some of this water with us…”
Hearing Lucius mutter that, Seneca suddenly had an idea.
“Oh, maybe I can make a container. Give me a sec.”
Seneca took out her 【Magic Needle】 and began crafting a water pouch using magical thread. It was more like knitting than sewing, but she moved the needle skillfully as she went.
Her hands moved with incredible speed, and in no time, she had a finished pouch.
It was double-layered—thin but strong thread on the inside, and thick thread on the outside.
Of course, that alone wouldn’t prevent leaks. So Seneca transferred magic into the inner threads and used 【Elemental Conversion】 to turn them to ice. With a crisp sound, the inside layer froze solid.
“You’re really good at this.”
Lucius looked impressed, and Seneca smiled cheerfully as she scooped some water into the pouch.
“Ah…”
“What’s wrong?”
“I totally forgot—I can make a bit of water myself now.”
As she said that, water started to drip slowly from her hand.
Seneca had reached Level 4.
With everything that had happened, she hadn’t had time to really process it—but her level had indeed gone up.
[Elemental Conversion] was a sub-skill that allowed her to convert magic into different elements. Even before having the skill, Seneca had been able to convert her magic into fire and ice. Now, with the ability formalized as a skill, she could do it much more efficiently.
On top of the elements she had already mastered, she could now control new ones like water and light. It was a culmination of her years of hard work finally bearing fruit.
She hadn’t tested everything yet, but she had a good feeling about her [Patch] skill as well.
For example, the water pouch earlier was made simply by wrapping the magical thread in ice-elemental magic—something she could have done before if she didn’t care about efficiency. But with her new skill, she could directly patch “ice-element magic” into a leather pouch.
In other words, she could now imbue effects directly into things.
She might be able to patch fire-elemental energy into an ally’s sword to create a flame blade, or patch healing magic into wounds to provide ongoing treatment. She planned to try all kinds of things going forward.
This skill didn’t require her to physically produce a needle or thread. But in her mind, she imagined using a “needle of the heart” and “thread of the heart” to patch things together. So she was convinced that imagery was vital to how it worked.
As they walked slowly, the two kept glancing at each other over and over.
It was as if they were reassuring themselves of each other’s presence… or savoring the joy of being together.
For having been suddenly thrown into a grotesque world like the Demon Realm, the two of them were surprisingly calm.
Maybe it was because Lucius knew about the “Returnees”—people who had made it back from the Demon Realm—and had learned a few ways to get back.
Or maybe… they simply hadn’t run into any demons yet.
But the biggest reason was probably the unshakable, baseless confidence they both shared—that “as long as I’m with this person, we can overcome anything.”
When they first arrived in the Demon Realm, they had been in a psychological state close to panic. Seneca had worried about how much her condition would trouble everyone who was with her at the time. But once she realized that worrying wouldn’t change anything, she calmed down.
Escaping from the Demon Realm is no easy feat. It requires exceptional strength, and if luck turns against you, you might never make it back and simply die in some forsaken corner. Still, Seneca didn’t have the energy to stay scared forever, so she decided to just accept things as they were.
As a result, Seneca now explored the Demon Realm with a calmness that would almost make one feel sorry for Maior, who still wore a pained expression thinking of her.
While looking for things that seemed edible, the two talked a lot. It had only been four years, but there was so much they wanted to ask, and so much to say.
Even though it had been such a long time since she last saw Lucius, Seneca found it strange that they could talk as if they’d seen each other just yesterday. She could communicate exactly what she wanted to say, and she understood what Lucius meant too.
After entering the Royal Adventurer Academy, Seneca learned that even when using the same language, it’s possible for conversations to completely fail. Even people with brilliant minds representing entire nations could misunderstand one another if their assumptions weren’t aligned.
The paths of Seneca and Lucius had once diverged. That moment had felt like a true fork in fate, and at times, she even believed their lives would never intersect again. But now, Seneca felt that maybe their distance hadn’t been so great after all.
According to Lucius, once someone adapts to the Demon Realm, they begin to absorb the ambient mana and can even use it. Apparently, that also means needing less food.
When Seneca asked, “Lucius, you sure know a lot about the Demon Realm,”
“It was just really interesting. I mean, there’s a whole other world out there, and there were people who kept fighting and surviving in it. I never thought I’d actually come here, though…”
“If I had known, I might’ve studied it too.”
“Yeah. It was like reading a hero’s tale. In fact, some people who returned from the Demon Realm came back with special abilities.”
“…What if I become even more special than I already am?”
Seneca said this while glancing at Lucius, and the two of them giggled.
As they continued walking through the red-and-black landscape, they suddenly sensed a monster. Seneca noticed it first.
“I’ll fight it first.”
Saying that, Lucius drew a greatsword formed with his subskill 【Blade】 .
The monster appeared to be a subspecies of Minotaur, but it didn’t look particularly strong.
Lucius enhanced his body with 【Holy Magic】 , moved swiftly forward, and in the blink of an eye, he was upon the Minotaur—then he took its head off in a single slash.
“That was my first time fighting a Minotaur, but from what I’ve heard, they’re not supposed to be this weak, right?”
“Yeah. It didn’t even notice you coming. Maybe it was a special-type or something.”
As she said that, Seneca used her 【Sewing Pin】 to immobilize the Minotaur and began dismantling it to preserve the valuable meat.
While helping with the dismantling, Lucius thought about his subskill 【Blade】 .
Simply put, this ability creates Bladed objects using 【Holy Magic】 .
There are other similar skills, but this one has several advantages.
One is that he can wield 【Holy Magic】 as a sword. Turning it into a sword increases its destructive properties, giving it an abnormal sharpness. It’s so sharp that under normal conditions, Lucius has to consciously suppress its nature to avoid dulling his swordsmanship from lack of resistance.
Another benefit is that he can shape his mana into swords of any size. That might sound obvious, but the interesting part is the freedom in size. One time, Lucius tried making the smallest sword he could—and its attack power increased.
He later experimented with healing, detoxifying, and exorcising effects.
For some reason, all of those spells became more effective as well.
Thanks to that, Lucius now has a habit of shaping his mana into sword forms before releasing any spell. Even his defensive mana barriers, when viewed up close, probably look like countless repeating sword patterns.
It’s a powerful ability, but Lucius still felt it paled in comparison to other Saints’ legendary subskills—like 【Heal】 or 【Break】 .
However, he had heard that subskills for 【Holy Magic】 have high growth potential, and besides, the other Saints’ powers were at level 4, while his 【Blade】 was still only level 3. So he figured there was no point in comparing them right now—and decided not to worry about it.
