In Order To Ascend, I Became A Modern Wage Slave - Chapter 51: Finale
Chapter 51: Finale
“What should we do?” Luo Yang was practically about to cry, trying to threaten them. “I’m your boss! Don’t you want your salaries? If you kill me, you’ll lose your jobs! Do you understand what unemployment means?”
As soon as he finished speaking, the crowd became even more agitated. The entire building was shrouded in darkness as they shuffled towards them with zombie-like steps.
Luo Yang pleaded for help: “Bai Fan told me to come here. I thought I hadn’t been to the office in a while, so I decided to come down and check on the employees. But then the elevator malfunctioned, and as soon as it opened, I ended up here! What’s going on?! Ahhh!”
“A young man in his prime, only twenty-nine. I don’t want to die so young!”
Xi Yu felt Luo Yang was being completely useless and said, “You’re a god too. What are you afraid of them for?”
“Me, a god? Are you kidding me?” Luo Yang exclaimed in disbelief.
Xi Yu had forgotten that among all the gods, Luo Yang alone had no memory of his past.
But even without past memories, Luo Yang had managed to garner countless worshippers and offerings. He was harmless and the one Xi Yi felt most at ease with—someone he didn’t even consider a threat. What’s more, his current body was crafted by Xi Yi himself.
This was Xi Yi’s fallback plan.
If the mortals stopped worshipping him, he would simply become something they worshipped.
But now, this matter was Luo Yang’s to resolve.
Currently, Luo Yang was running all over the room, practically scared out of his wits. Seeing the “zombies” drawing closer, he decided to throw caution to the wind: “If I’m really a god, then what kind of god am I? What can I do? Do I have powers? Do you even know how to use powers?”
“I don’t know,” Xi Yu answered curtly, addressing all his questions at once.
Lian Bei suddenly interjected, “It looks like they’re all holding a piece of paper.”
“Paper?” Luo Yang turned around. “Could it be something important? If we take those papers, will they calm down?”
“Give it a try.” With that, Xi Yu stepped forward quickly and snatched a piece of paper from the hand of the nearest person.
The three of them looked closely, and written on the paper were the words—
Resignation Letter
Reason: Too much work, too little pay, and the boss is an idiot. I don’t want to do this anymore.
Luo Yang: “?”
Even a piece of paper could deliver a psychological blow.
Xi Yu asked, “Is the boss mentioned here you?”
“Yes,” Luo Yang admitted reluctantly. “So, if they’re coming over, it’s because they want to resign, right? If I sign and let them go, can we escape this place?”
Lian Bei straightened up, his eyes moving from the paper to the approaching figures. He said softly, “Not necessarily.”
“Not necessarily what?” Xi Yu asked sharply. Meanwhile, Luo Yang was already looking for a pen.
Pens were the most common item in this company, present everywhere. But now, as he searched, there wasn’t a single one to be found.
The crowd let out hoarse howls, and Luo Yang didn’t dare search their desks.
Xi Yu took a risky move, dashing through the crowd. After rummaging through four or five desks, he finally found a pen and threw it towards Luo Yang. Luo Yang quickly picked it up and squatted down to start signing.
“Thud.”
Halfway through signing his name, the pen suddenly fell from his hand.
“I…” Luo Yang looked at his hand in disbelief. “My index finger is gone!”
At that moment, one of the figures approached Luo Yang and raised a hand to strike him on the head.
“Ahhh!” Luo Yang covered his head and begged incoherently, “I’ll raise your salaries, okay? Don’t kill me!”
The expected blow didn’t land. Luo Yang peeked through his fingers to see that the person had stopped mid-motion.
Xi Yu shouted, “Luo Yang, repeat what you just said!”
Luo Yang, utterly confused, stammered, “I’ll raise your salaries!”
The person lowered their hand.
Luo Yang blinked, as if discovering some kind of switch. “I’ll raise all your salaries!”
The crowd stopped moving, but their vacant and fierce gazes remained fixed on him.
“A hundred?”
The crowd started moving again.
“A thousand! A thousand!”
They stopped.
“Two thousand!”
They retreated.
“Three thousand!”
They retreated even further, though their gazes remained menacing.
Lian Bei watched, somewhat dumbfounded. Xi Yu didn’t fully understand either but deduced from the amounts, “You must be the God of Wealth.”
“I’m not just a god—I’m the God of Wealth? For real?” Luo Yang asked incredulously.
Lian Bei said, “Try it out.”
Luo Yang opened his hand and said, “Let me have one coin.”
In the next second, a coin appeared in his palm.
“Holy crap!”
“Was it necessary to go this far?” A voice emerged from the darkness. It was Xi Yi.
This was Xi Yu’s first official meeting with him after returning. Xi Yi stood in front of him, smiling. “Long time no see. What, no greeting for your royal brother?”
Xi Yu didn’t move.
Xi Yi didn’t mind, waving his hand dismissively. “Suit yourself.” He then turned to Luo Yang and beckoned. “Come here.”
Luo Yang started uncontrollably moving toward his direction. He turned to look at Xi Mu, not understanding why.
“Lian Bei, you come too.”
Xi Mu turned his head and saw Lian Bei walking toward him. He and Luo Yang stood by his side, one on the left and one on the right, resembling protectors.
“Lian Bei?” Xi Mu weakly called.
In response, Xi Yi sneered coldly, “Your Majesty, I told you not to think about competing with me. If it weren’t for me, do you think you’d be standing here now?”
“I never thought about competing with you. It’s you who are too greedy, wanting to take everything for yourself, but labeling others as ungrateful.”
Xi Yi laughed as if he had heard a huge joke, “You’re useless, and now you blame me?”
He waved his hand, saying, “Lian Bei, kill him.”
Lian Bei took a step forward, opening his palm, white light shining on it as it rapidly flew toward him.
Is this for real?
Xi Mu quickly dodged.
Xi Yi watched for a while, then grew bored and left with Luo Yang.
“Lian Bei, let me go.” Xi Mu hurried to catch up but was stopped by Lian Bei. Xi Mu shouted, “Lian Bei, let me go!”
Lian Bei sneered, “I would like to, but unfortunately, I don’t take orders from you.”
—
“Where are you taking me?” Luo Yang couldn’t control himself.
Xi Yi said, “This life of yours, I gave it to you, do you know that?”
“What do you mean you gave it to me? I have parents! My mother even held me! How could it be given to me by you? Who are you to have such great influence?”
Xi Yi rubbed his forehead, “Forget it, I won’t talk to you much. Anyway, there won’t be any Luo Yang in this world, nor will there be the Venerable of All Phenomena.”
“Venerable of All Phenomena?” Luo Yang suddenly froze, murmuring, “Venerable of All Phenomena?”
His gaze became unfocused, his mouth still murmuring.
“Venerable of All Phenomena, Luo Yang, encompassing all phenomena, withered trees giving birth to flowers…”
—I am Venerable of All Phenomena, the one who encompasses all phenomena.
—I am Luo Yang, the Luo of encompassing all phenomena, the Yang of withered trees giving birth to flowers.
Why did he become the God of Wealth?
He was starved to death in his past life, due to a great drought, lacking both money and water.
After he died, Xi Mu personally buried him. A year later, he didn’t know where he came from, dusty and weary. By that time, his gravestone had been blown away by the wind, and no one knew where it went. But Xi Mu found his location precisely, dug a small hole beside him, took off the cloth pouch from his waist, threw it in, and covered it with thick soil.
Inside were various coins and treasures.
Xi Mu stood up and said, “I hope in your next life, you’ll be very rich and never die of hunger again.”
…
Luo Yang looked up, meeting Xi Yi’s eyes, and smiled, “Looks like I can become a man of humble origins.”
As he spoke, golden light radiated from his body.
Xi Yi never expected Luo Yang to do this.
He used his own magic to kill himself!
It was like cutting his own flesh piece by piece, heart-wrenching.
At that moment, Xi Mu caught up, “Luo Yang!”
But it was too late.
Enduring the pain of cutting his own flesh, Luo Yang still managed to show a smile. “Xi Yi, this life, I’m really damn rich.”
“Did you set up this trap, really thinking that my life must be exchanged for one of yours? Is there no other way? No way for everyone to survive?”
“I volunteered, don’t blame others.”
He finally turned into starlight, scattering and disappearing into the air.
Completely out of Xi Yi’s expectations.
He disappeared with his divine position.
But Xi Yi, having seen many things, quickly calmed down and looked at Xi Mu. “Lian Bei is so useless, even you couldn’t stop him?”
“He didn’t stop me.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, Lian Bei walked over.
Xi Yi narrowed his eyes, “Lian Bei, what are you trying to do?”
“Rebel,” Lian Bei shrugged, “Isn’t it obvious? You should have already expected this. No need to be so surprised.”
“Indeed, it’s not difficult,” Xi Yi smiled, “But did you forget? His life is in my hands. I can kill him anytime, anywhere.”
“You can’t.” Xi Mu interrupted, and then said a long sentence:
“The True Lord of the Covenant, whose real name is Xi Mu, later changed his name to Xi Yi, destroyed the country of Xiyu, and became the first generation of worshipped gods in the country of Nanlou. He protected the peace of the country. After a hundred years of the nation’s prosperity, the incense of the True Lord of the Covenant’s temple declined day by day. So, you imitated, causing a violent storm, leading to floods, but did not expect a genius to appear in this country. He dug canals, solving both floods and drought problems. Later, you tried to descend and create strife, starting wars, but there was one who unified it, and your scheme failed again. Twice in a row, your fame slowly faded. Yet you still couldn’t accept it. You manipulated the Immortal of Affection, making him your source of power, separated the Elemental Venerable, causing one to be devoted to you, and altered the memories of the True Lord Bai Fan, making her willing to work for you. You used me to threaten the Northern Venerable, leaving him with no choice but to be loyal to you.”
“But why did you leave me this sliver of my fragmented soul? Even with your far-reaching vision, you couldn’t foresee the scene seven thousand years later. It’s because this divine position belongs to me. If I perish, you will perish too, but if you perish, I won’t accompany you.”
Xi Mu smiled, “Your Majesty, I’m not wrong, am I?”
“Totally wrong.”
Though he said so, his words clearly lacked the confidence they once had.
“Your Majesty, you must admit it, this time you lost. The five great armies under the True Lord of the Covenant have been wiped out, and the True Lord of the Covenant hasn’t established any faith in the human world. After thousands of years, his power has been drained, and there’s little time left.”
There is no longer a True Lord of the Covenant in this world.
“Brother, you lost.”
Xi Yi maintained his composure, “So what? Are you going to kill me now?”
“No.”
“I just want to tell you, this world doesn’t belong to gods, it belongs to humans.”
“And you, are nothing.”
——The End.
