- Chapter 70 - The Heavens Have No Eyes
“My millet isn’t cheap. There is more than just my family growing millet in this village. The millet from Wang’s family sells for 20% less than mine. Why did you suddenly think of buying millet from me?” Ma asked.
“Of course, Aunt Ma’s millet is the best. I heard the rice made from it is sticky and very fragrant, so I specially came to buy two pounds to make porridge at home,” Su Mulan replied.
“Millet porridge is the best for health and digestion. Both children and adults benefit from drinking it.”
“Everyone in the village says you’ve changed for the better as a stepmother, and I didn’t believe it until now. You seem genuine. You also care about whether the children eat well,”
Ma said as she stood up, brushing off the threads from mending her clothes. “How much do you need? I’ll weigh it for you. Let’s be clear: my millet costs one cent per pound. You need to know that so you won’t complain later.”
“They say you get what you pay for. I know not to complain about what I know. I came straight to you instead of anyone else,” Su Mulan smiled. “Just give me three pounds of millet. When we finish it, I’ll come back for more.”
“Alright then.” Ma smiled, “Seeing how well you treat the four little radishes and how reasonable you speak, I’ll give you an extra half a pound this time.”
A few flattering words earn an extra half pound of millet—it seems compliments really can be used like money.
Su Mulan gratefully thanked her, and after Ma weighed the millet, Su Mulan counted out three cents and handed them to her.
“Auntie Ma, you must be busy, so I’ll head home now,” Su Mulan said as she hoisted the bamboo basket and walked away briskly with a smile.
“Take care…”
Watching Su Mulan hurry off, Ma reminded her to slow down. She shook her head with a smile when she heard Su Mulan’s distant reply of “Okay.”
Oh, that Su family, really something…
Ma sat back down, picked up her needle again, but paused when it pricked her hand while sewing. She sighed.
Su Mulan had really changed for the better now, caring so well for the four siblings. If Bai Shitang knew about this, he might finally find peace.
But as for this Bai Shitang, its fate is truly unpredictable.
At such a young age, he lost his wife, bringing home so many little radishes. Then he ended up with that previously malicious Su Mulan as his wife. Now that Su Mulan has finally had a change of heart and become a good person, Old Bai and Bai Shitang can’t see it anymore.
He was clearly a good person, helping so many people in the village, yet he died so young.
Heaven really doesn’t have much foresight…
Back at home, Su Mulan scooped out a bowl of millet from the bag and placed it in a basin, soaking it in water.
“Mom, do you need any help with anything?” Bai Shuiliu’s ankle had improved a lot, and she leaned against the kitchen wall, approaching Su Mulan.
“No need, just soaking this for now,” Su Mulan replied. “I’ll start cooking in the afternoon.”
“I’ll watch the house for now. I’ll go to the field to turn the soil a bit. When I come back, I’ll make lunch for noon. I’ll also go to the sweet potato field and pick some sweet potato leaves to stir-fry.”
“Alright.” Bai Shuiliu struggled to stand up to see Su Mulan off, but she was gently pressed back down by her. She could only smile and say to Su Mulan, “Come back earlier, Mom.”
