- Chapter 10 - Imperial Edict Presses the Monarch onto the Bed
Luo Shen finally regained consciousness when there was a muffled bang on his head.
Then, the light woody fragrance came from the other party’s body. Luo Shen noticed the atmosphere in front of him, his mind was shocked, and he was confused.
What did he just….do?
The head was only a few inches away from his, Gu Xingzhi held down the bed board with one hand.
“Emperor……”
His voice sounded like he was in extreme pain, with a hint of forbearance.
Luo Shen raised his head guiltily, and a face holding back anger came into view.
This look…..it feels like he wants to kill him, right?
“What…..I mistook you for someone else.”
After Luo Shen finished talking nonsense, he turned around and wanted to run, completely forgetting that he was lying on the bed. As soon as his shoulders turned around, he was pressed back to the bed board by a hand.
There was a sound of thud.
Luo Shen was in pain and trembled all over.
Changan next to him hurried forward, with a respectful look: “General, you…….”
“Mistook?”
General Gu spoke in a low voice, slowly opening up, “I had just realized that the Emperor tried to grab my pendant earlier…….”
With a tone filled with suppressed anger, General Gu couldn’t believe that the Emperor had just attempted to take his pendant and even tried to pull him onto the bed. Now he claimed it was a case of mistaken identity?
At his words, Emperor Luo Shen shivered again.
“Mistook me for someone else?”
He looked at Chang’an behind General Gu, seeking help.
Chang’an swiftly picked up an object and prepared to knock someone unconscious.
But then, “The late Emperor’s decree stated that if I ever felt that the Emperor’s actions were lacking, I should personally enter the palace to provide guidance.”
Emperor Luo Shen’s mind went blank for a moment. His eyes gradually widened, and he stared blankly, asking, “What?”
It wasn’t the meaning he understood, was it?
“In recent days, I have deeply felt the Emperor’s physical weakness and his excessive self-indulgence. I have decided to enter the palace today and personally provide guidance to the Emperor.”
General Gu clenched his teeth and enunciated every word.
When he received the decree initially, he didn’t understand its meaning, especially since he hadn’t studied how to govern the country or assist the Emperor, let alone teach a new Emperor.
But now, it appeared that this decree was meant to establish a relationship between them.
However……
Since the late Emperor wanted to win him over to work for the new Emperor, what harm could there be in letting him vent a little?
Emperor Luo Shen: “…….”
He turned to look at Chang’an.
Chang’an silently put the item back in its place and gazed up at the ceiling.
Emperor Luo Shen’s heart trembled, and he swallowed hard. “Isn’t this… not a good idea?”
If he left General Gu in the palace, he would eventually be exposed!
Whether he wanted it or not, it was not important.
With the imperial decree in General Gu’s hands, what right did he have to refuse?
If this spread out to his people, would he even be able to continue as the Emperor?
Emperor Luo Shen furrowed his brow. His head felt heavy, and he couldn’t think of any valid excuse for refusal.
Lying there, he blinked for a while, and even asked, “Am I really this useless?”
“……” General Gu was momentarily stunned, and the anger in his chest dissipated in an instant.
Chang’an, upon hearing this, quickly slipped out of the study. Conversations between monarch and ministers were not something a eunuch like him should be listening to. Even if Emperor Luo Shen wasn’t thinking clearly due to his illness, it wasn’t a place for him to stay.
Chang’an looked at the door and sighed in his heart. He could only pray that Luo Shen wouldn’t make any mistakes again.
In the house, after asking, Luo Shen looked lonely and said, “It’s okay. I agree. You go back and clean up and move into the palace tomorrow.”
Gu Xingzhi was caught off guard, and a bunch of words were shoved back into his throat.
For a moment, he even suspected that he had wrongly blamed Luo Shen.
“What……can you get up?”
It was only after he regained his senses that he realized what kind of gesture he was talking to Luo Shen just now.
His face turned black immediately, and he immediately stood up and knelt down.
“I’m guilty, sir.”
Luo Shen: “……”
I’m afraid your crime is not limited to this one.
He was tired and didn’t want to talk about it with Gu Xingzhi.
“You go back first.”
When Gu Xingzhi saw him, he got up and walked back to the desk to continue reviewing the memorial. He didn’t seem to want to talk about the case just now, so he had to turn around and leave.
When he returned to his hometown, he met with Lao Gu and briefly explained the matter.
Therefore, Lao Gu sighed: “The emperor has been pampered since he was a child. The late emperor’s worries will eventually have to be faced. Xiaoxing, when you go to the palace, don’t be too harsh on the emperor.”
Gu Xingzhi didn’t understand: “The late emperor asked his son to return to the imperial city. He couldn’t play with the emperor, right?”
“Of course not!” Lao Gu glared at him, “Where are you thinking!”
Gu Xingzhi touched his nose and said, “Is dad willing to see the emperor like this?”
The former emperor asked him, a man who had been fighting all day long, to assist the new emperor, but he left Lao Gu who had real experience in assisting him at home. Now Lao Gu is telling him not to be too harsh on the new emperor.
No matter how you look at it, it doesn’t look like he really has the intention to train the current emperor.
Therefore, he has to think more about it.
So Lao Gu stared at him and was silent for a moment, thinking that he would have to tell him sooner or later, it might as well…
It’s better to reveal something now, so don’t tell this son who suddenly wanted to help him to waste his efforts: “After half a month, Prince Ping will return to the court, and he will probably live in the palace. You can walk around with him more then.”
So Xingzhi frowned: “Who is this?”
“At first, the emperor studied with me, and later he was adopted as a stepson by the late emperor, but things were in a hurry and he didn’t have time to tell the world.” So Lao Gu picked up the tea cup, used the cup lid to cut off the edge of the tea foam, and blew the hot air away, “Now that he’s back, It must be a shock, so be careful of Prince Ping.”
When Gu Xingzhi heard this, his expression became even more confused: “Is he the emperor’s companion?”
Who is that person in the palace?
“Yes.” Lao Gu took a sip of tea and saw that his expression was not right, “What? Are you interested in Prince Ping?”
Gu Xingzhi shook his head, then thought of something and nodded again: “Dad, you said he has arrived in the capital, right?”
Therefore, Lao Gu was stunned when he heard this. When he looked up at him again, his eyes were a little more uncertain: “How do you know?”
Gu Xingzhi’s heart moved slightly, and he asked tentatively: “Is he in the palace now?”
Therefore, Lao Gu shook his head: “Although he is capable, he is not in the palace now. He will naturally appear in front of everyone before the time is up.”
Therefore, I understand.
Could it be that that person is a long-term man?
Is that why he can walk out of the palace freely, but he also says that he can’t leave the palace in case he is invited back?
It’s no wonder that he always thought of him as the master, and there were so many helpers.
How could a mere reading companion have this ability, but if it was Prince Ping, then it would be possible.
It suddenly dawned on him.
“By the way, I heard that you stayed in the palace yesterday?” Lao Gu suddenly asked.
General Gu nodded, “I saw an unusual case.”
Lao Gu replied, “That’s good. Get closer to the Emperor.”
General Gu thought for a moment, staring at Lao Gu’s tea-drinking face.
Was this just a casual remark?
A simple way to strengthen the bond between monarch and minister?
Why did it feel like he was marrying off his son?
“Alright, you’re going to the palace tomorrow. Don’t you want to inform your mother?” Lao Gu teased, “You’ve only returned for a few days, and now you’re going back to the palace. Your mother will probably cry her eyes out.”
General Gu: “…”
He stood up, walked to the door, paused, and turned back. He couldn’t help asking, “Dad, you didn’t make any agreements with the late Emperor, did you?”
Lao Gu tilted his teacup slightly, his expression changing for a moment before returning to normal. “Why would I?”
He had only made a bet.
General Gu was skeptical as he left the room.
Lao Gu quickly put the teacup on the table and hastily wiped off the hot tea that had spilled onto his clothes, wrinkling his face.
“Someone, someone!”
Who had poured him such scalding tea!!!
On the other hand, General Gu originally went to the door of Madam Gu’s room to find her, but the servant said she was in the kitchen. So, he changed his direction and went to the kitchen.
From a distance, he saw a familiar figure bustling around in the kitchen.
He walked up and called out, “Mother.”
Madame Gu paused in her actions, turned around, and complained, “You finally remembered to come back. You weren’t captivated by the palace, were you?”
General Gu smiled and went over to help, “The palace is just the palace. There’s no place like home. I still have the imperial decree, and I’m still here in the borderlands.”
Or so he said, but Madam Gu couldn’t help but feel bitter. She had accompanied Lao Gu to the borderlands for a few days when he went there earlier, and now that she finally looked forward to her son’s return and when he came back he ran back into the palace. She felt quite distressed.
“I see the Emperor as handsome and upright. Why do you want to go to the palace to teach him? Do you even know how to?” Madame Gu couldn’t help but voice her concerns.
General Gu thought to himself that this was the normal reaction! Why did his dad feel like he was marrying him off?
But the next moment, Madame Gu said, “However, if you go, it’s not impossible.”
She continued, “You were appointed as the late Emperor’s chief minister. They won’t make things too difficult for you, but you can’t be too aloof either.”
Following her line of thought, General Gu noticed the table full of pastries.
“Mother, the palace pastries are beyond comparison with what we make at home. Not to mention that the Emperor might not appreciate them, even the palace maids and eunuchs might not be interested. Why go to all this trouble?”
Madame Gu also realized this, but she looked at General Gu with hopeful eyes. He immediately surrendered.
“Alright, Mother, who are these pastries for?”
Madame Gu looked at him expectantly and casually picked up a piece of pastry, “Of course, it’s for your colleagues. If they don’t want to eat them, give them to the palace maids, eunuchs, or secret guards…”
“Oh, Mother, you didn’t happen to have a little brother or sister and sent them to the palace, did you?”
The pastries in Madam Gu’s hand fell to the ground with a clatter.
