- Chapter 15 - Interrogation: His Majesty's Admirable Masculine Charm
When Loushen woke up again, he found himself in a dimly lit chamber, chained, with sparse moonlight filtering in through the window. Across from him sat a familiar face, and his expression was hard to put into words.
“Awake?” Loming sat behind the table, sipping tea with an air of calm. “What’s your relationship with the Emperor?”
Loushen was puzzled. “What do you mean?”
Loming locked eyes with him and smiled slyly. “You’re quite good at pretending. Are you the Emperor’s private pet, or perhaps you’re Gu’s lover?”
Loushen thought carefully and eventually drew a conclusion.
His face mask hadn’t been discovered by Loming. Their meeting in the garden that night had led Loming to a misunderstanding. If he was the former, capturing him could expose the Emperor’s secret. If he was the latter, capturing him while Gushichen’s loved one was kidnapped in the palace might shake Gu Xingzhi’s trust in the Emperor.
Either way, capturing him was a win for Loming.
However…
He hadn’t even considered that the person he had captured was Loushen himself.
Loushen stared at the cup of tea on the table, deliberately placed in his direction by Loming. What was the meaning behind this?
“I believe you’re a smart person,” Loming commented. Someone who could hide in the harem for so long without being discovered was far from ordinary.
Loushen’s expression became conflicted. “I’m just a lowly private pet. I have no value to you. Are you more interested in hearing bedroom secrets? Why not let me go? I wouldn’t dare to say anything to the Emperor.”
Loming chuckled and retorted, “Do you think I’m that foolish? So you can go back and report me to the Emperor?”
Although a lowly private pet, Loushen couldn’t help but consider if Loming had some affection for him?
Loushen looked puzzled. “So, do you want to kill me?”
If the intention was to kill him, why go through the trouble of capturing him in the first place?
“Since you’re so useful, there’s no need to kill you,” Loming replied with a sinister smile, sending shivers down Loushen’s spine.
“Are you… poisoning me?” Loushen asked cautiously.
Loming’s smile deepened. “Indeed, you’re quite clever.”
Loushen’s neck stiffened for a moment, and he stared at Loming with suspicion. He quickly changed his tune. “If I tell you everything you want to know, will you let me go?”
Loming raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t you claim not to know anything earlier? How come you suddenly want to answer the questions I want to know?”
Loushen looked conflicted. “Well, it’s like a gamble, isn’t it?”
Loming chuckled, finding this situation quite amusing. He took a sip of tea and tilted his chin. “The antidote is in this tea. First, confess something to show your sincerity.”
After a moment of silence, Loushen whispered, “The Emperor has a mole on his buttocks.”
Loming raised an eyebrow. “Did I ask you that?”
Loushen shook his head innocently. “You already know I’m just a lowly private pet. I can only see the Emperor in bed. How would I know about other matters? If you’re asking about something else, I genuinely have no idea.”
Loming’s chest heaved as he considered Loushen’s words. How could he verify this?
“Is there anything else you genuinely don’t know about?”
Loushen earnestly shook his head. “I was trained specifically to serve the Emperor in bed. How could I understand the matters between adults like you? If you want to know, you can ask me about things I do understand, like what positions the Emperor prefers.”
Loming remained silent for a moment and felt somewhat convinced by Loushen’s words. After all, a chamber palace servant might not be privy to such information.
But at least it confirmed to him that Loushen was a good person.
He asked, “Does the Emperor prefer women or men?”
Loushen hesitated, his eyes wide as he stared at Loming. His eyes seemed to shimmer as if tears were about to fall. “Whether the Emperor prefers men or women, how could I dare to inquire? But… I suppose the Emperor would prefer women. After all, he will have to marry an Empress in the future…”
As he spoke, his voice grew softer, and his demeanor appeared as though he had been deeply affected by some hidden sorrow, displaying the vulnerability of a palace pet. Despite his plain appearance, his gaze made him look pitiable, almost like a favored concubine.
Even his posture didn’t seem artificially delicate.
Loming felt somewhat helpless.
He turned his head, waved his hand, and the guard brought over the cup of tea from the table, forcefully pouring it down Loushen’s throat.
Loushen was caught off guard and coughed violently. After a while, he managed to hide the medicinal leaves under his tongue. With reddened eyes, he looked up at Loming in alarm. “What is this, my lord?”
“You’re of no use to me, so I won’t trouble you any longer.”
Loming stood up and began to walk towards the door.
Beside him, someone unlocked the chains that bound him.
Loushen’s hands relaxed, and he quickly rubbed his wrists. “So, my lord…”
“However, I’d like to see how you serve the Emperor,” Loming suddenly turned towards him, a faint smile on his lips. “If a private pet like you is tainted, the Emperor probably won’t want you anymore. If you want to continue living in the palace, cooperate with me. Otherwise…”
Loushen hurriedly took a step forward but suddenly felt his body grow weak. He staggered, and someone caught him.
A guard puzzledly asked, “My lord, do you want to watch?”
Loming remained silent.
The door was quickly closed, leaving Loushen alone in the dim room with four burly men.
With the sound gone from outside, Loushen’s eyes turned cold. He scanned the four men and had a feeling that things were about to get ugly.
“Since there’s no one left to save you, if you want to suffer less, don’t resist,” one of the men said with a smile, believing that as long as there was someone to serve, it didn’t matter if it was a man or a woman. After all, the Emperor had used him for so long; he must be good.
Loushen had intended to resist directly, but when he raised his hand, he noticed a hole in the window. Someone seemed to be watching him.
Was it Loming…?
No, it couldn’t be.
Maybe one of the guards.
He withdrew his hand and put on an act, feigning weakness as the men roughly handled him, even tearing his clothes and touching him inappropriately.
The person outside saw that the view was blocked by the big man and figured there was no chance of escape. So they left.
Loushen evaded the grasp of one man, took a step back, but suddenly his body went limp, and someone behind him caught him.
Loushen had a moment of realization but was already weakened. He tried to resist the other man, but his movements were sluggish.
In that critical moment, he felt someone’s body against his back, and the pressure from the two sides lifted. He stumbled forward, catching his breath.
The man who had been pushed away was left standing by the door, dumbfounded.
Loushen blinked and saw a man he didn’t recognize, but before he could react, that man had thrown him aside.
The door suddenly burst open, and a figure rushed in, but before they could speak, someone lunged at them.
Loushen finally noticed and called out, “Gu Xingzhi?!”
Before he could say more, he saw Gu Xingzhi with a bewildered expression. But when Gu Xingzhi saw the worried look on his face, his confusion turned into gratitude. He pushed past the others, intent on reaching Loushen.
The remaining men finally snapped out of their daze. One went to grab Loushen, while the other two moved to intercept Gu Xingzhi.
Gu Xingzhi’s eyes grew darker, and with a swift motion, he grabbed the two men. In a flash, they were both dead.
In just an instant, Gu Xingzhi had taken down the two men, while one man was about to grab Loushen.
Gu Xingzhi reached Loushen’s wrist first and pulled him into his arms.
The last man attempted to escape, but as he approached the door, a sword blocked his path.
“Ha,” Changxin casually swung her sword, causing the man to shiver all over.
Then, her cold gaze landed on Gu Xingzhi.
At this moment, the effects of the medicine on Lou Shen had already begun to take hold. He glanced at Gu Xing Zhi, then at Chang Xin, and decisively pushed Gu Xing Zhi away, running toward Chang Xin’s location.
Seeing that Chang Xin’s attention had shifted, the big man immediately pushed the sword aside and tried to escape.
Chang Xin felt relieved and casually threw the sword in the direction of the big man. There was a soft “puff” sound as the sword pierced the man’s heart from behind, causing him to stiffen for a moment before collapsing.
He was dead.
Chang Xin glanced at Gu Xing Zhi, didn’t say much, and supported Lou Shen as they left.
Gu Xing Zhi stood there in a daze, recalling what Lou Shen had said in the garden earlier and realizing that his actions were just a burden to him. He self-mockingly smiled, then turned around. As he did, the jade pendant around his waist fell to the ground. It was only then that he remembered he hadn’t returned it to Lou Shen. He hurriedly chased after them.
Before he could catch up to them, he saw Chang Xin and Lou Shen stop, and a familiar figure kneeling before them, whispering, “I, this servant, deserve to die a thousand deaths!”
Gu Xing Zhi was stunned.
