- Chapter 33 - Misunderstanding - Going to the Gu Mansion to Pick Someone Up
Outside the window, the wind carried sand and stones, casting dappled shadows of the trees, while crickets sang loudly.
Inside, the shadows on the bed swayed, and faint sounds came from behind the bed curtains.
The movements were hurried, and a pushing hand was repeatedly pressed into the pillow. When the other person noticed something unusual there, he paused slightly.
Luo Shen asked cautiously, “Um… you’re not angry with me, are you?”
A low, husky chuckle came from above.
Immediately after, the figure pressed down again.
The spring breeze stirred, causing ripples in the bed.
Early the next morning, Luo Shen woke up in excruciating pain.
He opened his eyes, sweat already beading on his forehead. The pain felt like a knife twisting in his abdomen. Luo Shen couldn’t bear it and curled up.
Pale fingers pressed against the arm of the person beside him, and an uncontrollable groan escaped through his teeth.
Gu Xingzhi gradually regained consciousness. Hearing the pained breathing so close, he was momentarily bewildered before suddenly remembering that the person beside him was Luo Shen.
He snapped his eyes open and sat up, seeing Luo Shen drenched in sweat, his inner garments soaked through. Luo Shen’s thin lips were tightly clenched, unable to speak. One hand clutched at Gu Xingzhi, while the other gripped the blanket as if something monstrous lurked beneath it.
Gu Xingzhi urgently called out, “Someone! Someone come here!”
Chang An immediately rushed in, seeing the figure curled up on the bed. His first reaction was to scold Gu Xingzhi, “What did you do to the emperor?”
“Call the imperial physician!” Gu Xingzhi couldn’t break free. His arm was gripped tightly, blood already seeping from the wound, but he didn’t seem to notice, his mind consumed with panic.
What happened?
What’s going on?!
Chang An stumbled out, and the room fell silent for a moment. Then Chang Xin appeared out of nowhere with a bowl of medicinal soup. “Have the emperor drink this.”
Gu Xingzhi looked at her warily. “What is this?”
“Medicine,” Chang Xin said, “It’s good for the emperor.”
“No,” Gu Xingzhi refused. Without knowing its origins or purpose, how could he let Luo Shen drink it?
He looked at Chang Xin. “The imperial physician will be here shortly.”
“Oh.” Chang Xin turned to leave with the bowl, but Gu Xingzhi stopped her.
“What happened to the emperor while I was away?”
Chang Xin blinked in confusion. She didn’t really know either, just that after returning from training that day, Luo Shen and Chang An’s expressions were off.
Occasionally, similar situations would occur, and drinking the medicinal soup would help, but it had never been this severe.
Seeing that he couldn’t get any information from her, Gu Xingzhi guessed that only Luo Shen and Chang An knew the full story.
He looked at Luo Shen worriedly, his breathing tight.
After a while, Luo Shen managed to get through the initial wave of pain. He weakly opened his eyes, his eyelashes wet and clumped together from sweat.
Gu Xingzhi quickly reached out to wipe it away, prompting Luo Shen to open his innocent eyes.
“Feeling better?” Gu Xingzhi asked, his face tense, his hands trembling slightly.
“…Mm.” Luo Shen let go of his hand, allowing Gu Xingzhi to help him sit up. As he turned his head, he saw Chang Xin still standing there and called her over habitually, “Chang Xin, bring the medicine.”
“Oh.” Chang Xin walked over.
The medicinal soup was slightly cool but drinkable, though its bitterness was so intense it was hard to bear even from the smell.
Gu Xingzhi watched Luo Shen drink it all without changing his expression, feeling another tightness in his chest.
Chang Xin took the bowl away, also worried. “Emperor, are you feeling better?”
Luo Shen nodded weakly.
“Chang Xin, you may leave now,” said the person beside him suddenly.
Chang Xin looked at Luo Shen in dissatisfaction.
Are you ordering me around, or will you chop me up?
Luo Shen: “…”
His eyelid twitched, and he quickly said, “Chang Xin, you may leave now.”
“Okay.” Chang Xin left reluctantly, carrying her sword.
As the door closed, Gu Xingzhi’s low voice came from above, “Your Majesty, may I ask what that medicine was?”
Luo Shen opened his mouth, wanting to speak but unable to. After a moment of silence, the imperial physician arrived.
Chang An barged in without regard for the room’s atmosphere, taking in the current state of the two on the bed.
The imperial physician’s heart clenched as he rushed forward, glaring at Gu Xingzhi, “I’m here to treat the Emperor. Minister Gu, why are you still here?”
Gu Xingzhi was taken aback by the scolding. He raised his head, confused, “Can’t I stay with the Emperor during his treatment?”
The physician looked at the two of them, then at their disheveled clothes, growing even angrier, “The Emperor is not even two months—”
Before he could finish, Luo Shen interrupted, “Gu Xingzhi, leave!”
At the same time, Chang An covered the physician’s mouth.
Seeing this, Gu Xingzhi grew anxious, “Not even two months of what?”
The physician, even more enraged, wanted to hit someone, but he was no match for Chang An, who dragged him aside.
Gu Xingzhi turned to Luo Shen, eyes fierce, “Explain.”
“I…” Luo Shen knew he had misunderstood, but didn’t know how to explain. Plus, the pain began to return, intensifying as he tried to speak.
“You leave first… I’ll explain later.”
Seeing Luo Shen’s breathing becoming unstable again, Gu Xingzhi’s face grew even tenser, dark suspicions forming in his mind. He didn’t want to leave, “I need to stay here. Physician, treat him now!”
But Luo Shen suddenly picked up a pillow and threw it at him, anger evident on his pale face, “Get out!”
Gu Xingzhi froze.
Before he could ask more, he saw Luo Shen curl up in pain again. Worried and frustrated, he tried to approach, but Chang An’s cold voice stopped him.
“Minister Gu, the Emperor needs treatment. Can’t this wait?”
Gu Xingzhi glared at him but eventually turned and left.
He didn’t even take his outer robe with him.
The physician quickly stepped forward, checking Luo Shen’s pulse, his face turning green, “Your Majesty, you must avoid intercourse in the first four months of pregnancy. How could you neglect your health like this!”
As he directed Chang An to help hold Luo Shen down, he took out his acupuncture kit, his face full of resentment, “And that Gu Xingzhi, if you don’t care, shouldn’t he? How could he treat you like this?”
The physician cursed as he instructed Chang An to remove Luo Shen’s clothes.
Fortunately, the previous night hadn’t been too intense. After examining him and performing a quarter-hour of acupuncture, Luo Shen’s condition stabilized.
Hearing that Luo Shen had already taken the medicine from Chang Xin, Chang An snorted, “I think we should let Chang Xin just cut him down.”
Luo Shen, lying on the bed, looking at the ceiling, said faintly, “I ordered it. It’s not his fault.”
He wasn’t a woman and didn’t know about such rules. He acted on impulse.
If he had known it would cause such pain, nearly resulting in a miscarriage, he wouldn’t have dared.
The physician sighed, “After four months, you can resume, but by seven months you’ll need to prepare for delivery. By then, Your Majesty, you’ll be showing. You should tell him before then—”
He looked at Luo Shen’s pale face, feeling a pang of sorrow, “Your Majesty, does he…”
Luo Shen shook his head, “I haven’t decided how to tell him yet. He probably still misunderstands.”
Just thinking about Gu Xingzhi’s hurt reaction gave him a headache.
The physician and Chang An exchanged glances, firmly not taking the blame.
“Your Majesty, I’ll take my leave.”
“I’ll see him out!” Chang An quickly pulled the physician along.
The room was empty.
Luo Shen waited for a while, expecting someone to rush in, but saw no one. Exhausted, he fell asleep.
When he woke again, it was nearly afternoon. Luo Shen sat up and called for Chang An, “Where’s Gu Xingzhi?”
Chang An looked conflicted.
Luo Shen’s heart sank, “Where is he?”
“He… he… he went back to the Gu Mansion…”
Luo Shen: “…”
Next door, Chang Xin popped her head in, “Your Majesty, is he going back to his maiden home?”
Luo Shen’s expression cracked as he looked at Chang Xin.
Chang Xin continued blankly, “I heard that when a wife goes back to her maiden home, the husband must personally fetch her.”
So…
At the same time,
Back at the Gu Mansion, Gu Xingzhi’s first task was to find Lao Gu’s wife and ask her for that bottle of Hundred Poison Pills.
“Mother, where is your Hundred Poison Pills?” Gu Xingzhi asked.
“My child, what do you need that for?” Lao Gu’s wife asked, eating pastries and watching Gu Xingzhi rummage around the room.
“I…” Gu Xingzhi flashed a thought of Luo Shen’s pale face in his mind. He didn’t find any injuries on Luo Shen last night, so he could only guess that he was poisoned.
The palace had the most powerful antidote master, but he couldn’t cure it, indicating that the poison was extremely vicious. The only thing that could cure it was the Hundred Poison Pills.
But if the emperor was poisoned, this matter must not be leaked.
He could only say, “I have a friend who was poisoned.”
Lao Gu’s wife’s expression became serious upon hearing this. If Gu Xingzhi came to ask for the Hundred Poison Pills, then the other party must be critically ill.
However, before administering the medicine—
“Is your friend male or female?” Lao Gu’s wife asked.
Gu Xingzhi frowned. “Why do you ask?”
Lao Gu’s wife walked over. “For a man, it doesn’t matter what he takes, but for a woman—”
Gu Xingzhi casually asked, “What about for a woman?”
Lao Gu’s wife said, “This medicine is extremely cold in nature. If a woman takes it, it may damage the womb. If the person is pregnant, it may cause a miscarriage.”
Lao Gu’s wife thought of Changxin and her eyes softened. “If it causes a miscarriage, the pain can be life-threatening, so severe that it can cause loss of consciousness and bleeding from the abdomen. In short—”
She handed the pill to Gu Xingzhi. “If you need to feed it, be sure to ask clearly. Miscarriage can be serious or minor, and it can easily endanger lives. You must not harm others!”
Gu Xingzhi took the pill and thought to himself that Luo Shen was a man.
But his expression involuntarily changed, and he asked, “Then, mother, what category would you say people who are like women but are actually men belong to?”
Lao Gu’s wife widened her eyes at Gu Xingzhi. “Do you know?”
“What?” Gu Xingzhi was confused.
Lao Gu’s wife thought for a moment. Why would the emperor tell Gu Xingzhi his secrets?
That must be someone else he encountered, right?
She sighed in relief. “If the other person considers themselves a man, then they are a man. If they consider themselves a woman, then they are a woman. However—”
Lao Gu’s wife looked at the pill and also became troubled. She reminded Gu Xingzhi, “If your friend is one of those people, it’s best to ask if they are pregnant.”
Gu Xingzhi: “?”
Lao Gu’s wife said, “Back when your mother and I were fighting on the battlefield, we once met a man who could get pregnant and gave birth to a healthy child. So if it’s a person who can get pregnant, it’s best to be careful. Oh, by the way, is your friend…”
Before she could finish her sentence, a servant suddenly came in to report: “The Emperor has arrived—”
