- Chapter 59 - I’m in Pain, Just Because of This Face
En Shu regained his composure and lifted Luo Shen up.
Luo Shen immediately bent over, coughing and scraping the melon seeds from his throat as he coughed them out.
His face was flushed from coughing, and his voice became even more hoarse, clearly having injured his throat. After he finally got all the seeds out, his fingers were stained with some blood.
He fell weakly to the ground, his chest rising and falling.
But En Shu wasn’t about to let him rest. “Get up!”
Luo Shen shook his head. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to get up; he simply couldn’t.
En Shu snorted coldly, “If you don’t get up, do you believe I’ll—”
Luo Shen wasn’t concerned. He leaned against the edge of the bed and quietly said, “If my child is lost, Chang Qing won’t be able to report me.”
He raised his eyelids and saw that En Shu’s expression stiffened.
He continued, “Then you can make me pregnant again.”
Luo Shen’s expression changed, and he forced himself to remain calm. “I’m sorry, but the Imperial Physician said that if this child is lost, I won’t be able to conceive again.”
En Shu’s gaze was doubtful, but Luo Shen didn’t care if he believed it or not. Since En Shu wasn’t there to kill him, it meant he was still useful. Chang Qing probably hated him so much that he didn’t want to deal with him directly.
If that’s the case, there was still a chance.
Having talked too much, Luo Shen’s throat was burning with pain. He looked up at En Shu and gave him a signal, indicating, “I can’t get up.”
En Shu cursed under his breath and stepped forward to grab him. Luo Shen grabbed his clothes and wiped the saliva from his throat on them.
En Shu’s face immediately darkened. He said disdainfully, “En Shu, carry me. I can’t walk.”
En Shu: “……”
Do you think you’re here to enjoy yourself?
En Shu was even more enraged. Ignoring Luo Shen’s pale face, he forcibly dragged him away, with Luo Shen stumbling along behind him.
The basement was spacious, larger than the inn, with several small rooms and a large door.
Luo Shen looked around with hidden concern. With such a complex layout, if the shopkeeper used some tricks, Madam Gu might not notice. Even if she found it, who knew when that would be.
He withdrew his gaze and looked at En Shu’s stern face. Then, he pressed on the arm being dragged, quietly tearing the wound he had inflicted earlier to make it a bit worse.
The pain in his arm was piercing. Whenever he couldn’t bear it, he used his coughs to cover it.
En Shu, fearing Madam Gu might hear, quickly covered Luo Shen’s mouth. Luo Shen seized the chance to feign unconsciousness, collapsing into En Shu’s arms.
En Shu had no choice but to carry him. As he lifted him, he stumbled a step.
Luo Shen was light, and though his abdomen didn’t look too large, the child inside was almost six months along, and his weight had increased significantly.
At first, En Shu was unprepared and nearly dropped him, but he managed to stabilize himself in time.
Holding him, En Shu slowed his pace. Hearing footsteps approaching from a distance, he slipped into another door and exited through a waterway.
Luo Shen’s arm hung down, and blood dripped from his fingertips. As he moved, blood smeared on the wall, with occasional drops falling into the water. En Shu stopped momentarily, but in the darkness, he couldn’t see clearly, so he didn’t pay much attention and continued forward.
After walking for about a stick of incense’s worth of time, they finally exited the inn.
Calculating the distance, they had already gone beyond Madam Gu and the hidden guards’ patrol range.
En Shu, exhausted, set Luo Shen down and turned towards a nearby carriage.
Just as Luo Shen was about to open his eyes, a hand came over and covered his mouth and nose with a cloth.
Luo Shen struggled briefly, then fell still.
En Shu looked back, and the hidden guard said, “The master instructed to knock him out and bring him back, just in case.”
He folded the white cloth, covered Luo Shen’s eyes, and tied it securely. “The master said not to let him know the route.”
En Shu lowered his gaze, looking at the pale face, and couldn’t help but think of his own younger brother, who was also a twin. His feelings were complex as he turned and climbed into the carriage. “Bring him up.”
“Understood.”
Meanwhile, Madam Gu finally discovered the room where Luo Shen had been. With a stern face, she entered and immediately saw the scattered melon seeds on the floor, stained with blood.
Her face darkened completely, her fingers clenched tightly. In a rage, she laughed, “Good… good…”
She had never seen anyone so daring as to provoke her like this!
The hidden guards completed the search of the entire basement and found the waterway. Madam Gu followed it, using a fire stick to illuminate the bloodstains on the wall, feeling her heart tighten with pain.
When she finally went outside, it was already dark. The carriage had long gone, and the tracks had been covered by other carriages, leaving no trace of its whereabouts.
Madam Gu turned back and looked at the trembling shopkeeper and waiter with a faint smile.
However, this smile, accompanied by the cold wind and reflecting the firelight in her eyes, made it particularly chilling.
“Take him back and hand him over to my son.” Madam Gu turned, her face immediately dropping. She mounted her horse, cracked her whip, and as she set off, she raised her right hand and fired a signal flare into the sky.
The signal flare was small, but the sound was very loud and bright, visible even from several miles away in the town.
General Gu heard the flare and, upon looking outside, immediately understood what had happened. He contacted the shadow guards and sent a letter to the Gu family’s army.
Inside the room, Liu Kuang, starving, was too afraid to go out for fear of being discovered by Liu E. But he was so hungry that he pressed against the wall to listen for a while. Assuming people were no longer inside, he secretly moved the table and chairs aside and slowly opened the door to sneak out.
Luo Shen’s appearance had left a weak impression on the waiter, who hadn’t even descended the steps before running up to ask what the guest wanted, volunteering, “Please stay inside. I’ll bring it to you shortly.”
Liu Kuang felt relieved and smiled at the waiter, heading back.
Just at that moment, Liu E noticed him. The maid pulled out a portrait, compared it carefully, and said to Liu E, “Miss, this is him!”
Liu E came to her senses, grabbed the maid, and quickly walked towards the waiter.
Moments later, Liu Kuang’s door was knocked on.
He, holding his empty stomach, walked to the door. As soon as he opened it, a fragrant smell greeted him.
Liu Kuang froze, slowly looked down, and met a pair of familiar eyes.
The surroundings fell silent.
Liu Kuang: “……”
Liu E said in a soft voice, “Young Master… I accidentally took some medicine. Could you help me…?”
Liu Kuang, like he had caught a mouse, was so frightened that he instinctively threw Liu E out and slammed the door with a bang.
Thrown out, Liu E landed on the ground, her head still spinning.
What was happening? She had been thrown out?
She! Had been! Thrown out!
Liu E got up quickly, pounded on the door, and heard the sound of furniture being moved inside.
Liu E: “……”
Could it be… that someone doesn’t love me?
He really doesn’t like women, does he…
Thinking this, her expression changed again. She immediately ran back inside to write a letter, denouncing Liu Kuang’s actions.
“He actually threw me out! And blocked the door!”
“He definitely doesn’t care about women. He’s not a man!”
“……”
Luo Shen, who was deemed “not a man,” woke up.
He opened his eyes and took a long time to realize he was lying on the cold floor, the darkness in front of him due to a cloth bound over his eyes.
He raised his hand to remove it but found his hands were bound with chains.
Looking down, he noticed there were also chains around his neck and ankles, which clinked with his movements.
Luo Shen felt a bit panicked.
He didn’t remember how long he had been lying there. When he had his mouth and nose covered, he had intended to feign unconsciousness, but he was too exhausted, and with the blood loss from his arm, he had truly passed out after a while.
Now, feeling cold, he searched for his wound and lightly touched it, experiencing sharp pain.
Luo Shen winced softly. Unable to remove the blindfold, he could not see his surroundings or know if anyone was watching him.
Realizing this, Luo Shen stopped moving and called out tentatively, “Is anyone there?”
There was no response. Luo Shen winced again, his throat more painful after a night’s rest. He closed his mouth, swallowed, and the saliva only made his throat ache more.
Luo Shen, feeling wronged, said, “Is no one here? My child is hungry.”
Just then, a sneer came from the opposite side.
Luo Shen’s ears perked up. He asked, “Who is it?”
Chang Qing? Or En Shu?
“Does the Emperor not fear that the ministers standing before you are now?” En Shu’s provocative gaze swept over Luo Shen’s pregnant belly.
Having changed him into a thin outfit when he returned last night, En Shu could clearly see the bulging belly now, combined with the face, which was more alluring with the blindfold, adding a strange charm.
En Shu looked on and probably understood why Gu Xingzhi was interested in him—
If Luo Shen weren’t the Emperor, he might have been the top choice among young men, just based on this face.
Unfortunately, he was the Emperor.
And still a bit stubborn.
“Everyone is here? Then where is Xingzhi?”
En Shu: “……”
He ground his teeth, “He’s not here!”
“Oh.” Luo Shen’s tone was a bit disappointed. He coughed twice and said to En Shu, “My throat hurts.”
En Shu showed no sympathy. “Let it hurt you to death!”
“My health is poor and I easily fall ill.” Luo Shen coughed again, his voice hoarser, “If I’m not careful, I might really die.”
En Shu: “……”
His forehead twitched, glaring at Luo Shen.
Luo Shen continued, “When I was a child, I got a fish bone stuck in my throat, had a fever for seven days, and almost died. And now you’ve injured my throat like this.”
He couldn’t feel his own throat but sensed En Shu’s gaze on it, as if he might come over and cut it open.
After a while, he heard En Shu’s gritted teeth voice, “Why didn’t you die from the fever!”
Then, he turned and stormed off.
Hearing the door slam shut, Luo Shen finally sighed with relief, half-lying down. As his body relaxed, the itchiness in his throat returned, causing him to cough violently as if he wanted to cough his whole throat out.
Until he felt a warm, moist sensation on his lips, he pressed his lips together and detected a taste of rust.
Luo Shen placed a hand on his belly and then fainted again.
Outside, there was a commotion at that moment.
“Big Brother, I’m new here. Can you tell me the way to the side courtyard?”
