- Chapter 6 - Eight Men and One Imprisoned Making Desserts
It’s a dark and windy night, and a figure swiftly maneuvers through the bustling streets, heading towards the palace.
Changxin has long had control over all the information within and around the palace, including shortcuts, passages, and the patrol schedules.
Carrying a person on her back, she moves undetected, even with all the surveillance in place.
She continues until she leaps into a secluded courtyard.
Kicking open a room door, she drops the person onto the floor.
Several people inside the room immediately turn to look at Changxin in surprise.
The leader, a sturdy man, asks, “Changxin, how did you come here?”
As she spoke, her gaze landed on the unconscious Gu Xingzhi on the ground, and she smirked, “Where did you find this gentleman? He’s quite handsome, did our little sister finally find someone?”
Changxin responded with a snort, “He bullied my master.”
The leader of the group, a burly man, raised an eyebrow, “Dared to bully the Emperor?”
Changxin nodded, “Yes. You all, get him changed into coarse clothes.”
The eldest brother stepped forward and asked, “Why don’t we just kill him? Bullying the Emperor is a death sentence. Why keep him alive?”
Others nodded in agreement.
Changxin sighed, “The Emperor pities him and doesn’t want him dead, understand?”
They were all taken aback.
The eldest brother’s voice trembled as he said, “Changxin… we don’t deceive our own. You say the Emperor pities him… a man?”
Changxin nodded.
The eldest brother nodded thoughtfully.
Then he added, “But if the Emperor likes him, then we should accommodate him.”
Changxin retracted her drawn sword and nodded, “The Emperor does like him.”
The eldest brother asked again, “Little sister Changxin, if the Emperor likes him, we shouldn’t be too harsh on him. What should we do?”
Changxin leaned her chin on the hilt of her sword, pondering.
Suddenly, the fifth brother spoke up, “Shouldn’t we try to please the Emperor? He’s been bullied by this man, right? What we should do is make this man please the Emperor, to ease his anger.”
Changxin was taken aback and asked, “How would we do that?”
“Since he’s someone the Emperor likes, he must please the Emperor in bed,” the fifth brother replied.
The eighth brother, looking bewildered, added, “I heard in the streets that after quarrels in bed, there’s harmony. Is that what they mean?”
Changxin was confused. Sending Gu Xingzhi back to the Emperor’s bed didn’t sit well with her, but she couldn’t think of a better plan.
She asked, “Is there any other way besides sending him to the Emperor’s bed?”
“It’s simple. Let’s prepare some delicious food for the Emperor,” the fifth brother suggested. “He enjoys pastries, right?”
Changxin knew that the Emperor indeed liked pastries, but he was currently unwell, so his appetite might not be the same.
After considering everyone’s suggestions, Changxin decided, “Strip him of his clothes and dress him as a eunuch. Then, assign him to the palace kitchen to prepare some food. Tomorrow morning, I’ll deliver a prescription for him to prepare.”
Changxin contemplated the situation. Since Gu Xingzhi was now the Emperor’s man, he needed to learn how to please the Emperor, starting with making the Emperor’s favorite pastries.
“Assign him to the Imperial Kitchen and teach him how to make the Emperor’s favorite pastries.”
Before leaving, Changxin remembered something important and turned to tell them, “He seems to be unaware that the person is the Emperor, so don’t reveal it.”
The group of men replied with silence.
Well, this situation just got interesting!
After Changxin left, it took some time for Gu Xingzhi to gradually regain consciousness.
As soon as he opened his eyes, he saw eight burly men surrounding him in a circle. When they noticed he had awakened, they revealed sinister smiles. One of them said, “You’re awake?”
Gu Xingzhi remained silent.
“Little sister Changxin has left you in our care,” another man declared.
Gu Xingzhi’s forehead twitched. What was happening? Wasn’t the young lady supposed to take him to meet someone? Why had he been brought here?
Gu Xingzhi scanned the surroundings and confirmed that the person he was looking for wasn’t among these men. He forced a smile and asked, “May I inquire what that young lady told you and your companions?”
“She said you bullied the Empe….. our master,” the sixth brother replied, then sneered, “With your audacity, you dared to bully our master!”
Gu Xingzhi blinked in confusion. He had initially thought the young man he had met was just a minor noble, perhaps not well-liked, which could explain why he had been tricked into going to the Tianxi Tower. Otherwise, he could have simply asked someone where the tower was. But now, seeing these tough men, he began to wonder if that person was from a prominent family and had quite the backing.
However, he couldn’t help but think…
Gu Xingzhi glanced around.
Since he was here, that person should be nearby, right?
But wait…
Did that gentleman not reside in the palace? Was he met by Luoshen outside the palace instead?
Lost in thought, Gu Xingzhi was interrupted when the eldest brother couldn’t stand still and walked away. The other seven men continued to eye him with curiosity.
It was hard to resist. How could someone dare provoke the Emperor?
Gu Xingzhi was filled with curiosity. However, his attention was pulled back when he saw the eldest brother’s actions. Realizing that he was still tied up, he wriggled slightly and asked, “Why did you capture me? To beat me up?”
“Changxin said you’re here to work,” the eldest brother replied.
Gu Xingzhi blinked in bewilderment. In all his life, no one had ever asked him to work.
“What? Don’t want to?” The eldest brother returned with a set of clothes and tossed them onto Gu Xingzhi. He then gestured for someone to untie him and said, “See, you can either wear these yourself or let us help you.”
Gu Xingzhi relaxed his body, still feeling a bit weak from the lingering effects of the medicine. These men seemed strong, and he had no desire to confront them, so he complied. He took the clothes and stood up.
The medicine was still affecting him, making his body feel weak. Seeing the burly men around him, he decided to play along and accepted the clothes.
After changing into the new attire, Gu Xingzhi asked, “Where are the others?”
The eldest brother returned, clearly irritated. He glanced at Gu Xingzhi and replied, “Why do you care?”
Gu Xingzhi couldn’t help but be curious about their actions. “Why aren’t they here?”
The eldest brother gave him a disapproving look but handed him a ribbon. “Blindfold yourself.”
Gu Xingzhi was momentarily puzzled. “What’s this about?”
The eldest brother responded coldly, “Because of you, our master fell ill.”
Gu Xingzhi furrowed his brows, realizing that his actions that night might have been too harsh. He felt a pang of guilt. Perhaps doing some work to compensate for his actions wasn’t such a bad idea.
However, he had one question in mind. “May I know the name of your master?”
The eldest brother sighed and said, “You’ll find out later. Today, we brought you here to make amends. We didn’t intend to let you meet our master.”
Gu Xingzhi understood the situation better now. The person he was looking for was ill, and his subordinates had discovered what had happened that night, leading to his capture. However, it seemed they didn’t plan to take him to meet their master.
If they didn’t allow him to meet their master, how would he ensure that his efforts to make amends were acknowledged?
Gu Xingzhi’s brow furrowed, and he was curious about why they would start working at this late hour.
“Put it on,” the eldest brother said, sounding tired.
He was an undercover guard, not skilled in this kind of work. He knew that Changxin hadn’t killed Gu Xingzhi, which meant that it was something the Emperor wanted. If the Emperor wanted it, there would be a day when Gu Xingzhi would be taken to the palace. He couldn’t afford to injure or harm him prematurely, as it might upset the Emperor.
So, he had no choice but to watch for now.
With these thoughts in mind, Gu Xingzhi decided to comply and blindfolded himself as instructed.
“Let’s go,” he said.
The eldest brother regained his composure and thought that Gu Xingzhi was quite reasonable for not causing a scene like others might have. Additionally, he wasn’t bad-looking, which might explain why the Emperor took an interest in him. His earlier annoyance had mostly dissipated.
With Gu Xingzhi blindfolded, the eldest brother led him to the kitchen, where someone was already waiting. He pushed Gu Xingzhi inside and said, “You won’t be released until you’ve personally made the pastries.”
Then he locked the door.
Gu Xingzhi removed his blindfold and found himself facing a middle-aged woman in the kitchen, who appeared to be rolling up her sleeves, preparing to work.
He approached the door and pushed it slightly, realizing that it was locked from the outside, and it felt unusually heavy, as if there was a metal door outside the wooden one.
He walked around the room but didn’t see any other exits, so he turned back to the woman and asked, “Are you from this household?”
The woman glanced at him and then made a hand gesture.
Gu Xingzhi sighed internally. It seemed she was mute.

The next morning, Luoshen woke up abruptly from a dream. He sat up in bed, realizing that it was still early in the morning, and the room was dimly lit.
He touched his forehead, remembering the face of Changxin, the guard who had fainted last night. His eyebrows furrowed slightly, and he quickly got out of bed. However, as he took a few steps, his attention was captured by the table filled with pastries.
“Ch-Changan?”
Outside the room, a eunuch opened the door and hurriedly said, “Changan Gonggong wasn’t on duty last night; he has already gone to rest.”
Then, he glanced up and asked, “Would you like me to fetch Changan Gonggong for you?”
Luoshen rubbed his temples and waved his hand. “Never mind, you can go.”
The eunuch then closed the door.
Luoshen walked over to the table and sat down, looking at the dimly lit room. He asked, “Changxin, why are you making pastries so early?”
Changxin, holding a set of kitchen clothes, came over and removed the mask from her face. She replied, “I didn’t make them. Someone else did.”
Luoshen inquired, “Then who did?”
Changxin had initially thought about saying it was Gu Xingzhi, but she remembered how Luoshen had stopped her from going to him last night. Worried that Luoshen might blame her for making a court official bake pastries, she changed her response. “I made them. I was afraid you wouldn’t be pleased, so I made some extra for you.”
Luoshen stared at the misshapen pastries on the table and thought, “Are you serious?”
