Picking Up An Alpha On Garbage Star - Chapter 16
If one were to claim that Xie Yu had no objections to the treatment of the military, it would be a falsehood. The military was composed of brothers and sisters who were willing to devote their lives and bodies. How could he bear to see them suffer? However, since the founding of the Lyte Empire, the military had always been primarily supplied with nutritional supplements, and this had not changed in the past fifty years. Xie Yu did indeed have the intention to change this unofficial and outdated rule, but due to his lack of influence and limited abilities, he had not been able to do so. His father was the Commander-in-Chief of the Third Corps, a prominent general, but their ability to influence decisions was limited, and he, even more so.
When something unreasonable continued to be accepted as the norm for a long time, people would forget its irrationality.
It was only when Pei An raised the issue that Xie Yu suddenly realized that he had been too passive in the past.
He should learn from Pei An and not hesitate so much when it came to making decisions. Such caution was not a characteristic of a commander.
Xie Yu suddenly saw the light, and he gratefully looked at Pei An. “Pei An, thank you.”
Pei An: What’s wrong with this person?
Ignoring Xie Yu’s sudden eccentricity, Pei An spent the afternoon discussing with Shu Mingya the issue of recruiting help for the welfare institute. After dinner at the welfare institute, he returned home.
By the time he got home, it was already evening. Pei An locked the door and began to contact Xiao Xue.
He had installed a shielding system at home, so when he communicated with Xiao Xue, he activated the shielding system, making it impossible for Xie Yu to hear what he and Xiao Xue were discussing.
Xiao Xue was still wearing her white coat, and she appeared to be a gentle and warm-hearted girl, but when she was angered, even Pei An had to keep his distance and not approach her. Only her boyfriend, Yan Yue, dared to help her stroke her fur.
“Why did you suddenly decide to contact me? Weren’t you going to avoid disturbing my nightlife?” Xiao Xue smiled on the video call.
Pei An spoke seriously, “I suspect that Fan Wen has plans against us.”
Xiao Xue’s smile gradually faded from her face. “With the handful of people he has, they’re no match for us. Did he invite someone else?”
“I suspect that he has some connection with the 286th Legion of the Fifth Corps.”
Pei An recounted the whole story of how he forced Fan Wen to deal with the Wind and Rain of Jin Feng, and Fan Wen provided him with ten vials of VC+ Healing Gel.
“I believe that Fan Wen’s relationship with the 286th Legion isn’t very deep. If it were, with Fan Wen’s personality, he would have invited the 286th Legion to deal with us when we first provoked him.”
“I agree with your thoughts. I just don’t know what methods Fan Wen will use to invite the 286th Legion to the Moran System, and I’m not at ease with things that are beyond my control.”
Xiao Xue chuckled. “Come on, you’re only twenty-six years old, and you’re not as old as Yan Yue and me. Don’t be like a sixty-two-year-old; you think so much every day, you’ll start getting wrinkles.”
Pei An touched his eye corners. “I don’t have wrinkles. It looks like I was born with good looks.”
Xiao Xue couldn’t help but laugh. “Of course, Pei An, you’re the most handsome omega in the world.”
Pei An: “Be low-key, be low-key.”
After joking around for a few moments, Xiao Xue returned to the topic at hand. “By the way, the superbrain you had someone deliver last time has been pretty much figured out. We cracked it, and it’s already been transferred to our own equipment. It’s not as good as Fire, but it’s still quite useful.”
Everyone had different abilities, and after Li Chengrui had finished extracting all the data he could, he turned the superbrain over to Xiao Xue and her team.
Pei An’s eyes lit up. “That’s great!”
Xiao Xue was also happy. “I believe in our technical abilities, and with the help of Fire, our future work will become smoother and smoother.”
Pei An was overjoyed. “We will get out of the Moran System, and we will seek justice in the Central Star.”
Pei An’s mood also turned serious. His eyes reflected a determined light. “We will.”
After ending the video call with Xiao Xue, Pei An went to the bathroom to freshen up.
Xie Yu had finished getting ready earlier but didn’t return to the bedroom. He was in the living room, immersed in thought about something related to his intellect.
Pei An respected people’s privacy and didn’t have any curiosity about what he might be doing. He greeted him before going to take a shower.
Xie Yu was attempting to establish a communication channel that could reach beyond the Moran System.
When his spaceship had run into trouble, it wasn’t too far from the Legion. He had only been on duty for two days, and given that this area near Xuanxing was within his patrol range, he hoped to extend the communication signal to possibly get in touch with his Legion.
If Fan Wen was indeed connected to the 286th Legion, he knew Pei An would have no chance. Civilian armed forces couldn’t possibly stand against a well-equipped regular army. The Third Corps and the Fifth Corps within the Lyte Empire had never had good relations, and they had a history of fighting whenever they met. Fan Wen, with his connections, wouldn’t grant Pei An a favor if the 286th Legion were to intervene in the Moran System. He might even join them in eliminating Pei An.
No matter how impressive Pei An might be, without an army or proper equipment, he was of no use.
So Xie Yu decided to take a risk by tapping into the communication of the administrative office.
Pei An, unaware of Xie Yu’s concern for his safety, finished his shower and went back to his room to sleep.
Xie Yu’s attempts at eavesdropping on communications weren’t going smoothly, and the signal was disrupted. He decided to rest for now and try again the next day.
The next morning, after receiving his breakfast, which consisted of milk and sandwiches prepared by Xie Yu, Pei An was once again delighted. The sandwiches, while not overly complex, had a variety of fillings, both meat and vegetarian, making them quite rich.
Pei An felt like he was living a really good life. Having Xie Yu, who was essentially a free caretaker, to cook and do the dishes was a luxury. Once Xie Yu and his people gathered and he could demand a substantial “gratitude fee” for saving his life, Pei An felt even happier thinking about it.
“Now that you know I’m not an ordinary person, I can’t bring you to work with me,” Pei An said as he finished breakfast and wiped his mouth with a napkin. “If you want to go for a ride or visit the welfare institute, you can manage it yourself.”
Pei An had dropped enough hints about his real identity, and he wasn’t interested in hiding it anymore.
Xie Yu understood, and he had no intention of prying further into Pei An’s affairs. In any case, even if he were curious about Pei An’s profession, he couldn’t conduct surveillance on people.
After breakfast, Pei An went back upstairs to his room. Today, it was Ah Huai who drove him. Yi Rui remained at Shu Mingya’s place to help out.
“Boss, I heard that you transferred Lu Changhui to logistics,” Ah Huai couldn’t resist asking as soon as Pei An got in the car.
Pei An sighed, looking somewhat troubled. “You certainly keep up with the latest news.”
Ah Huai chuckled. “We’re not blind. Lu Changhui used to see you every time he came, and his eyes practically glued themselves to you. It would be strange if we didn’t notice. Besides, he always discussed it openly in front of us. It’s no secret.”
Pei An frowned. “Did Lu Changhui’s intentions seem that obvious?” He knew that Lu Changhui had an interest in him, but he hadn’t really paid attention to how deep that interest ran.
Ah Huai said with a knowing smile, “It’s not hard to tell. When you weren’t at the base, Lu Changhui would talk about you every day. Of course, he only discussed it in front of us; he didn’t go around announcing it to everyone.”
Pei An’s brow furrowed even more.
Even if Lu Changhui had feelings for him, there was no need to make it obvious to everyone. Pei An wasn’t Lu Changhui’s property, and constantly talking about it in front of everyone made it seem like Pei An was ungrateful for Lu Changhui’s affections.
Previously, when Lu Changhui first encountered Xie Yu, he was quick to raise his gun. Even when Pei An asked him to put the gun down, Lu Changhui did so begrudgingly, as if he wanted to shoot Xie Yu on the spot.
Pei An didn’t develop an attraction for every Alpha he met. Moreover, he didn’t appreciate the extent of Lu Changhui’s focus on Xie Yu. It was too excessive, and he couldn’t stand it.
Pei An bit his finger, deep in thought. Would transferring Lu Changhui to logistics help refine his personality?
Upon arriving at the base, Pei An temporarily put aside the matter of Lu Changhui and called for a meeting.
The meeting room wasn’t filled to capacity, as some people were joining through holographic projection.
“I’ll keep it brief,” Pei An said, sitting upright with a straight back, looking nothing like the arrogant figure he had been yesterday when he had gone to the administrative office to make trouble.
“Based on the intelligence, we’re likely to engage with the military soon. Since we don’t have prior experience facing off against the military, everyone needs to be on high alert.”
Li Chengrui raised his hand and asked, “The new surveillance satellites are ready. Should we put them into use?”
Pei An nodded. “Confirmed, put them to use.”
“Everyone, we’re about to face our first major test. I hope we can start strong. We can’t afford to lose this initial battle. If we lose, we won’t have another chance. So, let’s bring all our assets into play and see just how different we are from the regular army.”
“The Blaze Star is always ready!” Xiao Xue declared loudly. “We’ve spent over a decade restoring the old and broken Blaze Star. It won’t let us down.”
“The Azure Dragon is on standby!”
“The White Tiger is on standby!”
“The Vermilion Bird is on standby!”
“The Black Tortoise is on standby!”
Pei An leaned back in his chair and declared, “Our first battle will be a victory!”
…
After leaving the meeting room, Pei An noticed Lu Changhui waiting outside. Lu Changhui didn’t have the qualifications to attend the meeting and couldn’t enter the room. But the moment he heard that Pei An had come to the base, he came to wait outside the meeting room.
Li Chengrui stopped in his tracks and saw Lu Changhui, so he told Pei An, “I’ll go to my office and wait for you.”
“Alright,” Pei An allowed Li Chengrui to leave first, then walked over to where Lu Changhui was waiting.
Lu Changhui followed him.
“Pei An, I heard you came to the base, and I rushed here to see you as soon as I could.” It was clear that Lu Changhui was excited to meet Pei An, gesturing with his hands and dancing around.
Pei An had too much on his mind about dealing with the 286th Legion and wasn’t interested in discussing personal matters, especially one-sided ones like Lu Changhui’s feelings.
“If it’s not an emergency, please don’t disturb my work,” Pei An had managed to control his impulse to get angry and spoke calmly. “I transferred you to logistics because I hoped you could take the time to settle down and become more mature. It seems you haven’t taken my words seriously.”
In the post-apocalyptic world, Pei An had witnessed too many people who refused to follow orders and ended up dying at the hands of zombies. They always thought too highly of themselves, acting arrogantly, especially after seeing his good friends perish while trying to protect those who had willingly run into danger.
He had grown tired of people who refused to follow commands.
