Picking Up An Alpha On Garbage Star - Chapter 19
Strike first to be strong… to be strong…”
Xie Yu’s Adam’s apple moved slightly. In the dark night, the faint light made it hard to see clearly. Pei An gazed at Xie Yu, and Xie Yu’s features became exceptionally clear.
Xie Yu appeared to have inherited the gentler side from his parents, not bearing the aggressive alpha traits that often dominated. However, if you closely observe his countenance, you’d notice the sharpness in the corners of his eyes, especially when viewing him from the side. His jawline seemed to radiate power.
“Don’t say such ominous words. How can you be sure that we will become opponents?” Xie Yu said to Pei An.
Pei An shifted his gaze away, looking out of the window at the unrecognizable scenery.
When the incident occurred, he had advocated gathering everyone together, forming the Starlight organization. Their initial goal was simply revenge, but as time went on, their objectives grew larger. They were no longer satisfied with revenge because the tragedy of that year couldn’t have been caused by a single person. The web of relationships was complex, and if they were to seek real vengeance, they had to take down every influential power.
There was no doubt that this would be challenging. The Lyte Empire had been established for fifty years, and shaking its rule was an extremely difficult task. When they made this decision, they never considered turning back.
Xie Yu was part of the Empire’s military, and unless he stood on the same side as Pei An, they would be enemies.
Frankly, Xie Yu was a great person. He had no bad habits, had his principles, and was a rarity among alphas who were often flawed.
Pei An wanted to have a good relationship with someone like Xie Yu, and not to become enemies.
The trip was quiet, with no words spoken. Xie Yu remained silent, and it wasn’t until they reached home that he asked Pei An to get out of the car.
“I’ll take a shower first today,” Pei An said. “I have other plans tomorrow, so I won’t get much sleep.”
Naturally, Xie Yu had no objections. “Remember to dry your hair. It’s not good to sleep with wet hair.”
Pei An pursed his lips. “I know. But I don’t really like using a hairdryer. It’s troublesome.”
As Pei An went into the bathroom to take a shower, lightning flashed in the sky, followed by the sound of pouring rain. After a sweltering day, the rain had finally arrived, and even inside the bathroom with the shower running, Pei An could hear the heavy downpour outside.
Pei An had intended to return to his room and sleep after his shower. But remembering Xie Yu’s advice about drying his hair, he reluctantly picked up the hairdryer, blowing it aimlessly. Still, his meticulous nature ensured that he retained a handsome appearance, as he didn’t want to look like a dog that had gnawed on his hair. Getting hair blown around like that in the middle of the night was almost scary.
The rain didn’t seem to be stopping soon. The wind howled, so when he left with an umbrella, it got distorted from the strong winds. Pei An was almost blown away by the wind. Luckily, he had wisely worn a waterproof coat. Otherwise, he’d have been soaking wet on the way back in this rain and wind.
Pei An’s bag still held the breakfast Xie Yu had made for him. What was it about Xie Yu? Why did he have this obsession with taking care of Pei An? While it made sense that Xie Yu would wake up early today, Pei An didn’t expect Xie Yu to wake up that early just because he did.
The rain was heavy today, and Pei An didn’t drive fast. By the time he arrived at the base, an hour had passed since he woke up.
Today, Lu Changhui will be executed. Li Chengrui asked Pei An if he wanted to show his face, but Pei An refused.
“What am I going to do there? Bid a tearful farewell? What if he thinks I’ve fallen for him, and he haunts me to death at the last moment? That would be a real annoyance.”
After hearing that, Li Chengrui realized there was some truth to Pei An’s words. He decided not to push Pei An to visit. Even he had no intention of going. He handed Lu Changhui’s case to He Dun’s people to handle. They had made the decision, and there was no need for them to appear again.
Pei An also didn’t have the time to attend. Manzhu had already confirmed that she would perform surgery on five people first. She was requesting personnel and supplies from Pei An.
“Ten tubes of healing gel are only enough for five people. Everyone agrees that we should operate on the five who are in the most critical condition, those who are in life-threatening situations. But the glands are more complicated than other organs, requiring a higher level of precision. The medical staff in our medical room can’t meet the standards. I have to borrow personnel from the base, and we need to use the base’s operating room.”
The base was different from other places. They couldn’t just bring patients into the base for surgery without Pei An’s approval.
“In that case, blindfold them on the way here, administer a powerful anesthetic, and take them directly to the operating room. After the surgery, we can return them.”
The base was crucial, but saving lives was also essential. Pei An had already built the base into an airtight fortress. Even if someone illegally entered, they would receive the news right away. So bringing patients to the base for surgery was fine with him.
“For other patients, surgery is not possible for the time being. I suggest we arrange for them to have contact with alphas. If they can resolve the issue through bonding, that would be the best solution. After all, we have plenty of alphas here, many of them are single. If they happen to get along, it could be a beautiful story.”
In Manzhu’s eyes, saving lives always took precedence. Therefore, she volunteered to play matchmaker.
“Okay, I’ll leave it to you as the chief physician.”
“Also, there’s one more thing.” Manzhu glanced at her notes. “I’ve tested those ten suppressants, and it turns out five of them have additives that act as heat triggers. If they were truly injected, the omega’s heat wouldn’t be suppressed; in fact, it would intensify.”
A coldness emanated from Pei An’s brows. “Fan Wen still likes using these underhanded methods.”
“He doesn’t know our true capabilities. Maybe he never thought we had the ability to test these drugs. He wanted to truly deceive you, and as long as he succeeds in deceiving you, he wins.” Manzhu explained.
“Wise men can be outwitted by wise men.” Pei An inquired, “The five suppressants with additives have been set aside separately, right?”
Manzhu confirmed, “Yes, they are stored separately. Do you want to destroy them immediately?”
Pei An raised a finger and wiggled it. “Fan Wen has sent me a significant gift. I can’t repay him in kind, so I’ll return this ‘gift’ to him.”
Manzhu understood and gave a sinister grin. Fan Wen wanted to inject Pei An with tampered suppressants, so why shouldn’t Pei An reciprocate?
As for whether Fan Wen was happy or not, that didn’t matter.
Manzhu stayed in Pei An’s office for a while, discussing the treatment plans. Afterward, she left to attend to other duties. Once she was gone, Lao Sisi sneaked into Pei An’s office.
“Boss, they just executed Lu Changhui,” Lao Sisi, who was petite at around 1.6 meters, reported. Even sitting in the chair across from Pei An, she had to look up to see him.
Pei An was puzzled. “You went to see it on purpose?”
Lao Sisi nodded and then rummaged around in her pockets, pulling out a necklace. At the end of the necklace hung a red gemstone shaped like a plum blossom.
“Boss, there are plenty of stones, so I cut one to make a necklace for you.” Lao Sisi presented the necklace with both hands. “A gift for you. I hope it’ll make you happy.”
Pei An was momentarily stunned and accepted the necklace. “Thank you for this thoughtful gift, Lao Sisi. But don’t worry, I’m not unhappy.”
Lao Sisi puffed out her cheeks. “You are.”
Pei An chuckled and held the necklace. His heart warmed.
Admittedly, he had matured beyond his years. When he was reborn into this body, he was only twelve years old. However, his soul had endured for years in the harsh conditions of the apocalypse. His soul’s age surpassed that of others, making him seem more mature.
Pei An had always felt older than his actual age. He treated Li Chengrui, Xiao Xue, Yan Yue, and even Lao Sisi as kids. Now, the role of a protective older brother had been reversed, and they were taking care of him.
Lao Sisi continued, “Your unhappiness has been driven away by my gift.”
Pei An admitted, “My unhappiness has indeed been dispelled by your gift.”
To Lao Sisi’s delight, he put on the necklace. “Boss, you look good in anything!”
After a brief moment of laughter, Lao Sisi leaned over the table. “Boss, Manzhu mentioned we have five suppressants. Can’t you use them during your heat this time?”
Lao Sisi was a beta, unable to fully grasp how challenging an omega’s heat could be. However, she noticed that every time Pei An isolated himself, he would appear thinner when he returned. She knew that the heat wasn’t easy for him.
“Let’s see how it goes,” Pei An smiled. These five suppressants were precious, and he didn’t intend to use one on himself if he could endure it. These suppressants were far too valuable to be wasted.
“To be honest, we’d be happy if you found a partner, whether an alpha or a beta. At least you’d have someone to accompany you,” Lao Sisi remarked, “but it seems like no one is good enough for you.”
Pei An playfully ruffled her hair. “Why are you so concerned about things that don’t matter?”
Lao Sisi was defiant and adjusted her hair. “How can this not matter? It shows our love for you!”
Pei An couldn’t help but smile. “Thanks for your concern. When I find someone, I’ll be sure to let you know immediately, alright?”
Lao Sisi was more than satisfied. “That’s fine!”
Then, Yi Rui knocked on the door and entered the office. “Brother Pei, I’ve made progress in what you asked me to investigate.”
“Alright, you two can discuss business. I’m going back to the lab.” Lao Sisi waved and left the office.
Pei An stretched his limbs. “Let me know what you’ve found.”
