Picking Up An Alpha On Garbage Star - Chapter 60
Pei An walked out of the infirmary, and everyone nearby stopped in their tracks to look at him.
Someone shouted, “Salute!”
Everyone stood at attention, heels together, and saluted in Pei An’s direction.
Everyone was concerned about Pei An’s condition. The news that he had lost the baby and could no longer have children couldn’t be hidden and wasn’t likely to stay secret.
This young and excellent leader and chief technical officer of the Xingchen organization was bearing tremendous pressure at an overly young age.
“Everyone, get back to work,” Pei An said, trying to make himself look as energetic as usual.
“Mr. Pei, we urgently contacted nearby teams to join the rescue. They jumped over, and we have protective equipment. Many items were donated to us, so there was no cost,” Lika said in a muffled voice.
“How long have I been unconscious?” Pei An asked softly.
“Twenty star hours,” Lika replied.
Twenty star hours. No wonder even the more distant troops had arrived; he had been asleep for so long.
“And the security team that ignored the distress call from the spaceship?” Pei An continued to ask.
“They’ve been disarmed and arrested. All three patrol ships have been incorporated into the army.”
Pei An nodded. “Where are the officers from the other units? I’d like to meet them.”
“They’re in the conference room. I’ll take you there,” Lika said.
Pei An replied, “Okay.”
Was there something else? Had he forgotten something?
As Pei An walked, he tried to remember. Then, he stopped.
He remembered.
“Does Xie Yu… know?” Pei An had forgotten this.
Lika quickly blinked back her tears. “We haven’t told the commander yet.”
Pei An’s heart ached again. If Xie Yu knew their child was gone, how heartbroken he would be.
“Tell him. Don’t hide it from him,” Pei An continued walking.
What could be hidden? This couldn’t be kept secret.
Lika responded softly, already planning how to deal with the damn interstellar pirates once they were captured.
Pei An knocked on the conference room door before entering. The officers in this room were at least colonel rank, like Lika, and there were even two major generals. However, they looked older than Xie Yu and Gu Fan.
Their uniforms varied, indicating they belonged to different army groups.
Lika stepped forward to introduce him. “This is Chief Technical Officer, Mr. Pei An.”
Hearing this, the officers understood Pei An’s identity—Xie Yu’s lover, who had just lost their child.
Pei An received salutes from the officers.
It was hard to imagine how Pei An had managed to leave his sickbed and walk to the conference room. He was incredibly strong, strong enough to evoke pity.
“The rescue work on Anmo Star is progressing smoothly. We’re discussing how to handle this serious incident,” the older major general said, showing goodwill to Pei An. “Mr. Pei, do you think we should inform the whole nation about Anmo Star’s deliberate attack by interstellar pirates?”
Pei An slowly sat down in a chair, wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, and carefully considered before answering.
“I believe we must inform the entire nation. First, there’s no way to hide that Anmo Star was attacked with biochemical weapons by interstellar pirates. The difference lies in whether people hear it from official sources or elsewhere. Second, informing the nation allows everyone to heighten their vigilance. Our military has been relentlessly pursuing the interstellar pirates, yet they’ve made such a bold move. I suspect they have intentions we haven’t foreseen.”
Still very weak, Pei An had to pause after speaking for a while to rest.
No one rushed him. They waited for him to continue after he rested.
“The third point, which worries me, is that the interstellar pirates might deliberately spread the news of their biochemical attack on Anmo Star, causing widespread panic.”
A colonel slammed the table, making a loud bang. “These damn desperadoes, do they want to start a war with the Empire?”
Pei An looked up. “It’s not impossible.”
Interstellar pirates were essentially a hidden rebel army, and their goal was naturally to incite rebellion.
“I agree with Mr. Pei,” another major general said. “We’ve had countless encounters with the interstellar pirates recently. They’re far stronger than we imagined, with large numbers and advanced equipment. I suspect they were already planning something in secret. Our sudden onslaught has forced them to adjust their plans.”
“Then let’s ask the military department to issue a nationwide announcement. Whatever those lunatics are planning, we’ll be ready!”
In the face of national affairs, emotions were different.
Along with the application, a separate message with unfortunate news was sent back to the central star, specifically for Xie Yu.
Xie Yu couldn’t believe the news he received from Ye Xiuzhe. He read the message over and over again, confirming that it was real and not a mistake.
Xie Yu was in denial. He and Pei An had a child, but the child was lost during the rescue mission on Anmo Star. Pei An’s reproductive cavity had already been damaged, so he could no longer have children, and his body was now very weak.
If it weren’t for Clovis experimenting on his own son’s body with drugs, Pei An wouldn’t have had a damaged reproductive cavity after differentiating into an omega.
“Mondray…” Xie Yu strode out of his office, calling his father while heading downstairs to get his car.
He needed to return to Pei An’s side. He could only leave the aftermath work on the central star to Ye Xiuzhe. With his father’s help, there would be no problems with the finishing tasks.
Xie Rao answered Xie Yu’s call: “Hello, son.”
“Father, I need to leave the central star immediately. Something happened to Pei An.” Xie Yu set the hover car to autopilot mode, as his hands were shaking. If he drove himself, there might be an accident.
Xie Rao was silent for a long time: “Did you say something happened to Pei An?”
Gu Yuanyang, who was having afternoon tea at a friend’s house, jumped up immediately, wanting to leave the central star to find Pei An and check on the child.
Xie Rao held Gu Yuanyang back tightly: “Lao Gu, calm down!”
“I can’t calm down!” Gu Yuanyang sat on the ground, ungracefully, “That’s Pei Ruyu’s child!”
“Yes, that’s Pei Ruyu’s child, and he’s also my son’s boyfriend!” Xie Rao rolled up his sleeves and put his hands on his hips. “But don’t forget, the commanders of the eight major armies cannot leave the central star without orders. If you run out now, someone will accuse you of rebellion! You can’t cause trouble for the younger generation at this time, and you don’t want to bring a bunch of problems to see Pei An, do you?”
Gu Yuanyang slowly calmed down after Xie Rao’s outburst, though not completely.
“If you’re worried, send someone over, but you absolutely cannot leave the central star.”
Gu Yuanyang buried his face in his hands: “Lao Xie, I’m sorry. It’s just that when I think of Pei Ruyu already gone, I can’t bear the thought of something happening to his child.”
Xie Rao pulled Gu Yuanyang up from the ground: “There’s no need for apologies between brothers. Let’s wait for Xie Yu to come back and find out what’s going on.”
Xie Yu rushed home from the military department, briefly explaining to Xie Rao and Gu Yuanyang what had happened before quickly packing and leaving again.
Before leaving, he entrusted his father with the aftermath, having no worries. Now, he had to hurry back to Pei An’s side.
In emergencies, the army’s signal boosters were quickly set up. Soon, the military issued a nationwide announcement condemning the actions of the interstellar pirates in the Luoshui system and promising, in the name of the military, to intensify efforts to eliminate them as soon as possible.
…
The search and rescue on Anmo Star continued for many days. Tens of thousands of people took turns in the rescue efforts, thoroughly scouring Anmo Star.
Under the biochemical weapons deployed by the interstellar pirates, not a single person survived; all had met tragic ends.
The corpses of millions needed to be cremated and buried, a massive task. Since Anmo Star didn’t have a cemetery large enough to accommodate millions, a temporary burial site had to be dug.
Everyone was burned together, their ashes mingled. Perhaps some were neighbors, others might have been enemies, or even someone who constantly complained about their boss was buried nearby.
But none of that mattered now, as they were all just ashes.
“Let’s build a memorial on Anmo Star,” Pei An said, wearing protective clothing and using a shovel to cover some dirt. “Make it big and use good materials.”
If Anmo Star could be visited years later, people would see a towering memorial.
“Mr. Pei, you should go back and rest,” Lin Bieyan took the shovel from Pei An. “You promised Dr. Manzhu to take your medicine on time.”
Pei An handed the shovel to Lin Bieyan but didn’t leave. He stood still: “I’ll wait until they’re all settled before I rest.”
Lin Bieyan, knowing Pei An’s stubborn nature, didn’t try to persuade him further but didn’t let him do any more labor. The task of burying the urns was left to them.
There weren’t enough urns at the moment, so each urn contained the ashes of several people before being placed in the ground and buried by the army.
Countless souls would rest here together.
The soil gradually covered the urns and leveled the ground. Then the soldiers built a 30-centimeter-high platform.
When all this was done, the burial was complete.
“Ready!”
The soldiers raised their guns in unison, aiming upward.
“Fire!”
The gunfire was deafening and continuous, with each gun firing ten rounds.
Only after the gun salute did the funeral come to an end. As soon as it was over, Pei An was urged by Lin Bieyan to go take his medicine. Pei An obediently took all the pills without even flinching.
“Pei An, listen to your sister and get some rest. Don’t work for now,” Manzhu said, distressed by the dark circles under Pei An’s eyes.
Why couldn’t the heavens show a little fairness to Pei An?
Back on the Goddess of Light(Spacecraft), the youngest person was Pei An, who led everyone to survival. It was Pei An who single-handedly established the Star Organization and trained his own army. Pei An had endured enough suffering. Why did they have to take away his only child?
Whenever Manzhu thought of this, she would curse the heavens for their injustice.
“Sister Manzhu, I want to spend some time with my father.” Pei An didn’t go back to his room to rest. Instead, he stubbornly walked to the room where thousands of souls were at rest.
Manzhu, worried, gave Pei An a soft mat, a thermos of warm water, and a bunch of canned food.
Pei An didn’t touch the water or the canned food. He just set them aside, laid out the mat on the ground, and sat down.
He skillfully pulled up a photo of Pei Ruyu, and after a moment of silence, he began to speak.
“Dad, Xie Yu and I were supposed to have a child, but I couldn’t keep the child. I cursed the Mondray family to be childless, but I’m actually a direct descendant of the Mondray family and I carry their blood. Now, my child is gone.” Pei An smiled bitterly. “Dad, do you think when I cursed the Mondray family, I should have included a clause to exclude myself?”
Tears welled up in Pei An’s eyes: “I really wanted a child connected to me by blood. With Xie Yu, I would have a complete family. But my simple wish has been shattered. I…”
He couldn’t say another word. During the search and rescue on Anmo Star, Pei An hadn’t shed a single tear. Everyone thought he was strong, with an extraordinary willpower. In reality, he was deeply pained, with a heart that ached constantly.
Finally, with no one around to see, he could cry freely.
…
Xie Yu shot an interstellar pirate in the head, letting the blood splatter onto his perfectly pristine military uniform.
His clothes were already stained with blood, some spots darker than others, crisscrossing his uniform.
These interstellar pirates were the ones who had slaughtered everyone on a civilian ship in the Luoshui system and then deployed biochemical weapons on Anmo Star.
After leaving the central star, Xie Yu immediately began tracking this group of pirates, making several emergency jumps before finally catching these bastards.
Compared to the pirates’ inhumanity, Xie Yu’s method of one-shot kills seemed almost routine. No torture, no drawn-out suffering—just quick, efficient kills.
But this still terrified many of the interstellar pirates, especially after their leader was shot in the head by Xie Yu from a great distance. They felt an unprecedented fear of Xie Yu.
“Major General Xie, please spare us! We’re just small fry following orders. We surrender!”
Some pirates knelt before Xie Yu, pleading for mercy.
Xie Yu wiped his gun, slowly inserting a new magazine: “Did I say you could surrender?”
The people on the ship had also surrendered, but did you spare them? You laughed while slaughtering everyone on that ship, turning it into a hellish nightmare. Those unarmed, innocent civilians begged for their lives, but did you spare them?
Xie Yu despised such hypocrisy. He raised his gun, aiming at another pirate’s head: “The millions of souls on Anmo Star are waiting for me to avenge them. Why should I spare you?”
“Bang.”
Another bullet was fired, ending another interstellar pirate’s life.
Seeing that surrender was hopeless, the remaining pirates began to resist desperately.
“Putting on a show in front of me will only get you a heroic death,” Xie Yu sneered at their last-ditch resistance. If they had maintained this attitude from the start, he might have respected them a bit.
However, pirates are still pirates.
Countless bullets were fired, and all the resisting pirates were riddled with holes.
“Commander, all the interstellar pirates who attacked the Luoshui system have been dealt with!”
Xie Yu stood there, looking at the fallen pirates, feeling a bit of the suffocating pressure lift from his heart.
“Throw them all into space,” Xie Yu said, then turned to leave, holstering his silver pistol.
He needed to take a shower and change into clean clothes before going to see Pei An.
Pei An, his Pei An.
The fleet accelerated and arrived at the Luoshui system, where they joined the main forces and met with other military officers who had come to support Anmo Star.
But now was not the time for pleasantries. Xie Yu hurriedly greeted them and then went to find Pei An.
Before the fleet rendezvoused, he had contacted Lika, who told him Pei An’s location. Xie Yu’s heart ached upon hearing it.
He went to the main ship’s cafeteria, made some porridge for Pei An, and packed it in a thermos to bring along.
On the way, he encountered Manzhu, who had come to wait for him.
When they met again, Manzhu seemed no longer as hostile as before, her whole demeanor wrapped in sadness.
“Xie Yu, I suppose you know everything now,” Manzhu sighed. “For an alpha, whether an omega can bear children is very important. Will you be like those other alphas?”
“Never.” Xie Yu didn’t care about that. To him, bloodlines didn’t decide everything. “I love Pei An, so I will love the child we could have had together. If Pei An can’t have children, then we won’t have a child.”
He said “if Pei An can’t” instead of “Pei An can’t.”
“If Pei An can’t” implied a choice, whereas “Pei An can’t” sounded like a fault imposed on Pei An.
Pei An deserved respect and honor.
Manzhu smiled bitterly, “I knew Pei An’s judgment wouldn’t be wrong. I was worrying unnecessarily.”
She didn’t disturb Xie Yu further, “Go to him. He needs you.”
Manzhu left, allowing Xie Yu to continue.
Xie Yu reached the room, opened the door, and saw Pei An sitting motionless on the floor, the water and food untouched beside him.
His heart ached as he walked over and crouched down in front of Pei An, “Pei An, I’m sorry I’m late.”
Pei An’s vacant eyes gradually focused upon hearing Xie Yu’s voice.
It was Xie Yu, not a hallucination, right?
Pei An hoarsely called out, “Xie Yu?”
His voice was raspy, clearly showing he hadn’t had water for a long time.
Xie Yu set down the thermos, slipped his arms under Pei An’s armpits, and pulled him into an embrace, “It’s me.”
Pei An clung to Xie Yu’s shoulders, burying his face in Xie Yu’s chest. He wanted to cry again in front of Xie Yu, but he had cried too much, his clothes soaked and dried repeatedly, and without water, he couldn’t cry anymore.
Xie Yu held Pei An with one arm, gently caressing the back of his head with the other, “It’s my fault. It’s all my fault.”
If he had been with Pei An when the accident happened, Pei An wouldn’t have had to endure alone. No, if he hadn’t slept with Pei An in the first place, Pei An wouldn’t have gotten pregnant, and none of this would have happened.
It was all his fault.
Pei An closed his tear-dried eyes, feeling the pain but overwhelmed by the heartache, making the eye pain negligible.
“We had a child growing in my belly. In a few more months, he would have been born, surely it would have been very cute,” Pei An’s fingers tightened on Xie Yu’s clothes, “But he’s gone, Xie Yu. Our child is gone.”
Years later, people would assume that the leader and the marshal not having descendants was a statement against hereditary succession. Few would know the pain they felt, having lost their only child at such a young age.
…
Pei An followed Xie Yu’s advice, drank water, and ate the porridge Xie Yu made. The long-exhausted omega, soothed by his alpha’s pheromones, fell into a deep sleep.
Xie Yu carried Pei An back to the bedroom, laid him on the bed, covered him with a blanket, and dimmed the lights to let Pei An sleep peacefully.
However, Pei An clung to Xie Yu’s hand, not letting go even in his sleep, instinctively releasing his pheromones to keep Xie Yu close.
So Xie Yu sat by the bed, letting Pei An hold onto him while using his other hand to handle work.
Pei An hadn’t had proper rest for days. Every time he closed his eyes, he dreamt of losing their child and woke up in a cold sweat. Each time he woke from a nightmare, Pei An didn’t want to sleep again. He would just sit by the window, staring at the stars outside.
When he was very young, the grandparents in the compound used to tell him stories, saying everyone was a star in the sky. When they became human, their light dimmed, and after leaving the human world, they would shine brightly again.
Pei An wanted to find the brightest star, believing it to be his child.
But no matter how he stared into the vast space, he couldn’t find that star.
In ancient Earth times, people stood on the ground and looked up at the stars, naming them and giving them magical stories and meanings. Later, when people flew to the stars, they became less mysterious and precious. As humanity expanded, acquiring more planets, the legends of stars faded.
But Pei An wanted to write a new story of the stars, a story compiled by him and his like-minded friends, retelling the tale of humanity and the stars.
For this, they worked tirelessly, day after day.
Even losing something precious wouldn’t stop them.
