- Chapter 11 - Aren't You All Hungry? I'm Starving!
One circle, two circles, three circles… The touch of his fingertips was soft and delicate, fleeting yet lingering, as if what he was tracing was not his arm, but the very tip of his heart.
Lin Qiao reached back and interlocked his fingers with the black graffiti, pressing them tightly together. Yan Ting in the back seat seemed completely oblivious to this. Lin Qiao needed something that was both lethal and wouldn’t compromise his character setup, and this shadow was just perfect.
Don’t assume that returning to the plane would be safe. Remember, the brown-haired male player didn’t come out to gather supplies. He’s not the type to stay idle. Staying on the plane, he would surely take advantage of the situation to do something. Moreover, the airport was swarming with shadows. Although most of them had been lured away by those searching for supplies, some might still be lying in wait.
The airport was dangerous, but they had to go there because everyone needed to continue escaping by plane. The sun would rise soon; there was no time to look for cellars or other shelters. Besides, there were too many black graffiti in the town. The ground was clearly the shadows’ home turf.
When the group arrived at the airport, they were indeed intercepted outside the plane. It looked like a fierce battle had taken place here. The waiting room’s glass was shattered in pieces, with bullet holes everywhere. Plane fuel had spilled, and fuel drums were burning fiercely. Several cars had collided not far away, possibly causing an explosion. Car parts flew out, still carrying unextinguished flames. Human limbs were scattered everywhere, and torsos that hadn’t been fully digested seemed to still have consciousness, twitching slightly. The shadows that were feeding on the ground were dispersed by a gunshot from those who returned.
There were only eight able-bodied people left on the plane; all the elderly, weak, women, and children had disappeared. Among the eight, three were Yan Ting’s bodyguards, which meant that including the brown-haired man, only five of the remaining passengers were still alive.
The brown-haired man finally got his wish to become the “leader,” blocking the cabin door with his four NPC minions. He spoke with great conviction: “We’ve suffered heavy losses. If it weren’t for us, the plane would have been occupied by those pitch-black things long ago.”
“No one would have been able to board the plane then. We defended the plane and didn’t go out to gather supplies. So, I think it’s only fair that you share some of the supplies you’ve collected with us. That’s not too much to ask, right?”
All the players who went out to gather supplies survived. Nine of the men in black suits had died two, leaving seven. All the crew members who went out except the captain perished, and of the fifty passengers who went to the town, only twenty-something returned. Everyone was in a sorry state and had no interest in dealing with the brown-haired man. Moreover, they didn’t want to waste time and wanted to get on the plane quickly to take off. So, many handed over their supplies without a fuss.
Yan Ting and his group didn’t give anything. The bodyguard player Zhong Minglang and the female lover player, who were part of Yan Ting’s faction, didn’t have to give anything either. The NPC captain was still useful, so the brown-haired man didn’t make things difficult for him. The other passengers and players had most of their supplies taken away. Especially the “orphan and widow” blonde boy and his mother, who had two-thirds of their food and water taken by the brown-haired man.
The female internet celebrity player refused to give anything: “Are you crazy? It’s fine to take things from NPCs, but why are you taking stuff from us players?”
The brown-haired man didn’t care: “We’re all players, that’s true, but the system never said players have to protect each other. You’re not my girlfriend; why should I give in to you?”
The brown-haired man patted the timid and introverted doctor player, Jun Shuyang: “Right, Jun Shuyang?”
Jun Shuyang gave a ingratiating smile, his pale face showing a bit of timidity: “It’s only right. It’s hard work guarding the plane, and it’s only fair to give some as a token of appreciation.”
The female internet celebrity rolled her eyes: “Why don’t you have any backbone? You’re such a sycophant, a fawning coward!”
The flight attendant player also complained: “He was always hiding when we were fighting those shadows in the town. He’s selfish.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” the doctor player apologized politely: “I won’t do it again.”
Seeing the doctor player’s meekness and his extreme tolerance even towards the brown-haired man’s four NPC minions, the two female players didn’t want to say anything more.
After learning that Yan Ting was injured, the brown-haired man’s mind started to wander. He counted the number of men among the remaining twenty passengers and came up with a plan.
“Return all the supplies of the male passengers,” the brown-haired man’s suggestion caught everyone’s attention.
The NPC minion asked, “Why? We’ve collected the supplies just fine. We don’t know when we’ll land next. How can we survive without food?”
The brown-haired man argued, “There are probably still about eleven of those hijackers left. Are you sure we can hold on to these supplies once they’re in our hands?”
“We’re reasonably asking for compensation, not robbing. Everyone should know who the real hijackers are.”
“Everyone was afraid of them because they had guns, but now we have guns too.”
The passengers had found weapons in the town, and the brown-haired man had taken guns from the dead bodyguards, as well as from the airport’s prohibited items storage room and the staff changing rooms.
“These hijackers knew about the solar anomalies but didn’t tell us. They were capable of hijacking the plane, let alone seizing supplies.”
This was indeed what all the passengers were worried about. Mainly, they wanted a say in the matter.
The brown-haired man’s words struck a chord with them: “You’ve seen those strange shadows. It’s the end of the world now. No one knows what will happen next or when this will end.”
“Maybe we’ll have to stay on the plane for a long time. Do you want to be oppressed by hijackers?”
Yes, the end of the world had arrived, and everyone was fending for themselves. The ugliness of human nature was fully unleashed. Just look at the situation in the town earlier—there were no shortage of selfish and harmful passengers.
If you don’t look out for yourself, you’ll be condemned by heaven and earth. Without a say and the right to be on the plane, do you want to keep following Yan Ting around and begging for mercy?
Even the other players, after hearing this, went from frowning to wavering. They were hesitant about whether to support the brown-haired man in gaining a say, because only then would players have the initiative and not have to follow the NPCs’ lead.
Seeing the atmosphere becoming subtly charged, the brown-haired man turned his attention to Yan Ting’s remaining bodyguards.
“These brothers here, with the end of the world upon us, you don’t need to listen to Yan Ting anymore. Do you still expect him to pay your wages? What’s the use of money now?”
“Protecting Yan Ting and risking your own lives—have you lost your minds?”
“Besides, don’t you want to be the leader?” The brown-haired man said, implying something as he looked at Lin Qiao, hinting, “Don’t you want to be the master and taste the pleasures of being the leader’s lover?”
“Aren’t you all hungry? I’m starving.”
“Look at that female lover—she’s quite sensible, isn’t she? She’s been following your captain Zhong Minglang, right? Maybe they’ve already hooked up.”
