Chapter 100: Fu Xingzhou vs. Qin Yanjun
Ever since Pei Yu accidentally discovered the clandestine relationship between his two roommates, he couldn’t help but constantly keep an eye on what the two were up to.
And then he found out that the school-wide heartthrob, Qin Yanjun, had never once slept in his own bed. Every time Pei Yu glanced over, Qin Yanjun’s bed was always empty. Looking down at the bottom bunk, there he was, sleeping in an embrace with their other roommate, Fu Xingzhou…
When exactly did these two start their secret relationship? Neither he nor Fei Qidi had noticed anything!
Feeling someone’s gaze on him, Fu Xingzhou turned his head to look up at Pei Yu, who appeared dazed, as if he had slept so much that his brain had turned to mush. Fu Xingzhou walked over and patted his blanket.
“It’s almost class time. Aren’t you getting up?”
“Ah!” Pei Yu snapped out of it and immediately sat bolt upright. “Crap, we’re gonna be late! No time to make my bed today!”
Qin Yanjun, who had just finished tidying up his own bed, glanced at him.
“Do you want to be sentenced to cleaning toilets?”
If the dorm failed inspection, the dorm matron would send them to clean the communal toilets. Not too long ago, their dorm was punished because Pei Yu didn’t make his bed properly. The experience had been so nauseating that they nearly threw up. So when Pei Yu heard this, he abandoned putting on his pants and immediately bent over to fix his blanket.
He knew which choice to make: being late would just get him scolded by their homeroom teacher, but a messy dorm? That was a fate worse than death!
Meanwhile, Fu Xingzhou and Qin Yanjun sprinted into the classroom with just ten seconds to spare before the bell rang.
“Class, to help ease the stress of preparing for the college entrance exam, I’ve decided to team up with Class Five’s homeroom teacher to organize a two-day, one-night camping trip next week,” their homeroom teacher Wang Weide announced from the podium. “Attendance is optional. If you don’t want to go, let the class monitor know.”
The students erupted in excitement at the mention of a camping trip.
“We’re camping with Class Five? That means Qin Yanjun will be there too?!”
“Ahhh, I’m so excited! We’ll get to see Qin the School Heartthrob up close!”
“You girls are such fangirls. Unlike us guys, who are just going to have fun.”
“Ha, yeah right. Didn’t you say the other day that you’d die to see Han Shuxue?”
“Ahem, anyway, Teacher Wang, where exactly are we going, and when?”
“Good question, Yang Chang,” Wang Weide replied. “Since it’s camping, we have to go somewhere with a camping atmosphere. After much deliberation with Class Five’s teacher, we’ve decided on Wucheng Mountain in the west of the city. The place is beautiful, with great scenery and fresh air. There are also several farmstays nearby. If anyone wants to experience sleeping in a tent, you can rent one from the owners.”
He clapped his hands together. “Perfect, isn’t it?”
“Teacher Wang, you’re awesome! I’ve always wanted to try camping in the wild! I heard there are tents where you can see the stars. The view must be incredible!”
“They’re called stargazing tents!” a deskmate helpfully corrected.
Fu Xingzhou felt a tap on his back and turned to see Xi Ming leaning over.
“Xingzhou, are you going to the camping trip?”
“I want to, but Junjun doesn’t like noisy places.” He had never slept in one of those stargazing tents and didn’t know what it was like to lie outside looking at the stars. It would be nice to experience it with Junjun.
Xi Ming, frustrated by how everything Fu Xingzhou did revolved around Qin Yanjun, couldn’t help but blurt out, “If you want to go, then go. If Qin Yanjun doesn’t like crowds, he can just go home.”
Fu Xingzhou frowned slightly, sensing Xi Ming’s dislike for Junjun.
“I just mean that even though you and Qin Yanjun are good friends, you can’t let him dictate your life. If he’s really your friend, he’ll join you. And you haven’t even asked him yet. How do you know he won’t go?” Xi Ming hurried to explain, realizing he had misspoken.
Fu Xingzhou nodded after hearing his reasoning.
“I’ll ask Junjun after class.”
“Xingzhou,” Xi Ming called out again, thinking about what Meng Qiang had said in the dorm the other day. He hesitated but ultimately decided not to say anything.
“What is it?” Fu Xingzhou asked, confused.
“It’s nothing. I just wanted to thank you.”
“Thank me?” Fu Xingzhou looked puzzled.
“For helping with the bulletin board.”
“Oh, that was days ago. And you already thanked me!” Fu Xingzhou tilted his head at him, feeling that something was off.
“Haha,” Xi Ming forced a laugh. “I’ve been forgetful lately. Thanks for reminding me.”
Forgetful? More like unforgettable—especially how Qin Yanjun had maxed out his meal card buying small lobsters for Fu Xingzhou. He’d never forget that as long as he lived!
By the time their teacher reminded everyone to bring their ID cards back after the trip, the students had finally calmed down enough to begin their morning reading.
That afternoon, Fu Xingzhou waited outside Class Five’s classroom. Qin Yanjun came out about ten minutes after the dismissal bell, his bag slung over one shoulder.
“Junjun.” Fu Xingzhou called out as he approached, his gaze landing on Han Shuxue, who stood behind Junjun. He couldn’t help but glance at her a couple more times.
“What are you looking at?” Qin Yanjun asked.
“Han Shuxue. She’s so pretty,” Fu Xingzhou whispered, leaning closer.
Qin Yanjun’s brow furrowed slightly. “You think she’s pretty?”
Fu Xingzhou nodded. “Yeah.” He couldn’t resist stealing another glance at her.
Qin Yanjun’s frown deepened. Something wasn’t right. Zhouzhou had never shown interest in girls before. He’d always preferred looking at handsome older brothers, and even their aunts Molly and Linda rarely received compliments from him.
But now, he was saying Han Shuxue was pretty? This was very unusual.
Unaware of Qin Yanjun’s growing unease, Fu Xingzhou continued walking with his head down. Tugging at his bag strap, he hesitantly asked, “Junjun, are you going to the camping trip? Our teacher said it’ll be at Wucheng Mountain, and my great-grandfather lives there. I’d like to visit him.”
Qin Yanjun was amused by the cautious way he was being probed and let a small smile play at the corners of his mouth.
“Alright. It’s been a while since we visited your great-grandfather. We should pay him a visit.”
Hearing this, Fu Xingzhou’s eyes lit up instantly.
“Yes! Yes! We can visit my great-grandfather and join the camping trip while we’re at it!”
Afraid of raising suspicion, he emphasized the “while we’re at it” part.
“Alright,” Qin Yanjun nodded, his lips curling into a smile at the sight of Zhouzhou’s radiant face.
Silly Zhouzhou, he thought to himself.
When they reached the school gate, they saw Shen Yunxing leaning against a black car wearing a mask.
“Dad!” Fu Xingzhou called out, rushing over excitedly to embrace Shen Yunxing, who had been away filming for two months.
“You’re still so clingy even at this age. Junjun might laugh at you,” Shen Yunxing said with a soft chuckle as he stroked his son’s hair.
Fu Xingzhou shook his head. “He won’t.”
Shen Yunxing smiled. “Aren’t you worried your classmates might see?”
Fu Xingzhou hesitated, then reluctantly pulled away from his father’s embrace after rubbing his head against him one last time.
Not seeing his younger brother, he asked, “Dad, isn’t Chuan Chuan out yet?”
“Mm, let’s wait a bit longer.” Shen Yunxing sighed. “He’s probably been held back to clean up again by his teacher.”
“Chuan Chuan’s been pretty well-behaved this week. He shouldn’t have upset the teacher,” Fu Xingzhou said uncertainly. When his brother was younger, he was so obedient and adorable. How did he grow up to be someone who causes trouble and gets detention almost every other day?
Maybe it’s time to have a proper talk with him, Fu Xingzhou thought.
Shen Yunxing said, “It’s hot outside; let’s wait in the car.”
The two boys nodded, and once they got into the car, Fu Xingzhou told his dad about the camping trip planned at Wucheng Mountain.
“Sounds great. Your father and I will join as well,” Shen Yunxing said with a smile to his eldest son. “I have about half a month off this time, so I can spend more time with you three.”
Fu Xingzhou nodded happily. “Mm!”
After waiting for about ten minutes, Shen Xinting appeared with a palm print on his left cheek, carrying his schoolbag.
From a distance, Fu Xingzhou couldn’t see the mark on his brother’s face and stuck his hand out of the car window, shouting, “Chuan Chuan, over here!”
Shen Xinting froze in place, gripping the straps of his bag. After standing there for a moment, he walked slowly to the car, opened the door, and saw his archenemy, Qin Yanjun, sitting inside. Pressing his lips together, he closed the door and got into the passenger seat instead.
“Shen Xinting, what’s with the handprint on your face? Did you get into a fight?” Shen Yunxing frowned, noticing the red mark on his youngest son’s cheek.
Fu Xingzhou saw it too and leaned forward to peer at his brother with concern.
“Chuan Chuan, did someone bully you?”
“No.” Shen Xinting glanced at Qin Yanjun, who was sitting on his brother’s left side, clearly listening even though he pretended not to. He hemmed and hawed, reluctant to explain.
Shen Yunxing held his son’s chin and inspected the mark, frowning further. “Who hit you? Did they get hurt too?”
Shen Xinting shook his head, making Shen Yunxing even angrier.
“They didn’t? Were you tied up or something? Why didn’t you fight back?”
Shen Xinting looked at his dad for a moment before hesitating and then speaking guiltily. “I accidentally kissed her, and she slapped me…”
Shen Yunxing froze. “You… harassed someone?”
“It wasn’t harassment!” Shen Xinting quickly clarified. “We were all playing around, and I didn’t notice her behind me. I turned around and kissed her accidentally. I didn’t mean to! And she already slapped me, so we’re even!” He covered his swollen cheek as he spoke.
Shen Yunxing: “Was it a boy or a girl? And where did you kiss them?”
Shen Xinting: “She had her hair tied up, so I think she’s a girl… I kissed her on the mouth.” He shrank back, repeating softly, “It wasn’t on purpose…”
Shen Yunxing: “…”
Fu Xingzhou’s eyes widened gradually.
Even Qin Yanjun couldn’t help but glance at the foolish boy.
“Dad, will Cen Jing’s parents come to the school to cause trouble? I really didn’t mean it!” Shen Xinting was on the verge of tears.
He had been apologizing to Cen Jing all morning, but she wouldn’t acknowledge him. She must hate him now. If she told her parents he harassed her, he wouldn’t just be infamous in middle school—his name would probably spread to the high school division too!
“Don’t worry. Kids playing around isn’t a big deal. She might not even tell her parents,” Shen Yunxing said calmly. “Let’s head home first.”
It was rush hour on top of school dismissal time, so it took them nearly half an hour to get home. By the time they arrived, it was almost 7 p.m., and Fu Tingzhou had already finished preparing dinner.
“Junjun, stay and eat before you leave. I’ve already spoken to your parents,” Shen Yunxing said.
Qin Yanjun nodded. “Alright.”
After dinner, the family of four, plus Qin Yanjun, sat in the living room to discuss how to handle Shen Xinting’s “harassment” incident.
Surrounded by four people, Shen Xinting glanced around and finally fixed his gaze on Qin Yanjun.
Why are you still here? You’ve eaten and had your drink. Shouldn’t you go home and spend time with your parents by now?
Qin Yanjun ignored him, turning instead to look at Fu Xingzhou’s serious little face, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
Shen Xinting: “…”
That’s definitely a provocation! One day, I’ll find a way to make my brother dump you. Let’s see how smug you’ll be then!
“It’s probably nothing serious. Don’t overthink it,” said Fu Tingzhou, who had been roped into the discussion. “It’s almost nine now. If the parents wanted to make a fuss, they would’ve called already.”
Shen Xinting nodded.
He thought so too. Cen Jing usually kept to herself and had only slapped him. Everything else seemed normal afterward—she went to class, ate her meals, and acted like usual.
“Dad, Papa, can we call it a night? I promised my friends I’d meet them for a game at nine…” Shen Xinting rubbed his pants nervously and threw his dad a pleading look.
Fu Tingzhou nodded slightly. Patting his son’s shoulder, he said with a faint smile, “It’ll be fine. Let the kids handle their own matters. By the way, Director Song’s Water World is being re-released tomorrow. Should we go watch it?”
Shen Yunxing, who had been hesitant earlier, immediately agreed upon hearing about the re-release.
“Let’s go!”
And so, the “trial” ended, and Shen Xinting was free.
“Junjun, do you want to stay and finish your homework before heading home?” Fu Xingzhou asked.
Qin Yanjun nodded without hesitation.
Shen Xinting hesitated, torn between going to the study to keep an eye on Qin Yanjun or heading to the game room to play with his friends. After five minutes of deliberation, he chose gaming.
It’s fine, Qin Yanjun will leave after finishing his homework.
But when he emerged from the game room later, he saw Qin Yanjun stepping out of his brother’s room wearing pajamas. Shen Xinting froze, eyes wide in disbelief.
“Why are you still here?!”
Qin Yanjun glanced at him, went to the kitchen to make a cup of honey water, and passed by him on his way back. “Are you sure Cen Jing is a girl? I’ve seen ‘her’ use the male staff restroom more than once.”
With that, he opened the door and walked back into Fu Xingzhou’s room, leaving Shen Xinting standing there, staring at the closed door, utterly dumbfounded.
Wait a minute, if Cen Jing isn’t a girl, what is she? She’s so pretty, with a ponytail and dresses. If she isn’t a girl, does that mean she’s a boy?!
Shen Xinting shook his head furiously.
Qin Yanjun’s up to no good. He’s definitely trying to mess with me!
