Chapter 110: Shen Xinting vs. Cen Jing
S University is one of the top universities in the country. Shen Xinting honored the promise he made with Cen Jing and was admitted to S University a year ago with the top score in his school. However, he chose to enroll in the affiliated medical college.
This decision caused a stir at S University at the time, even prompting the university president to ask if he had mistakenly applied to the wrong program.
Shen Xinting hadn’t made a mistake. He was steadfast in his belief that Cen Jing would one day return to his side. Even though his friends advised him to let go, he remained firm in his conviction.
“Chairman Shen, you’re finally here!” Li Jue waved at him as he rode up on his bicycle. “Hurry up! I need to escort a few freshmen to the teaching building later, so keep an eye on things for me in the meantime.”
Shen Xinting parked his bike to the side. The intense heat prompted him to tug at the front of his T-shirt to fan himself. This simple and ordinary action drew a wave of excited gasps from the surrounding crowd.
“Ahhh, so handsome!”
“Oh my god, that little tugging motion just tugged at my heartstrings! Chairman Shen is eternal!”
“I’ve always been a ‘top,’ but for Chairman Shen, I could endure being a ‘bottom!’”
“I can’t take it anymore, I’m about to get a nosebleed! Someone, please, hand me a tissue!”
Shen Xinting stopped fanning himself and pulled a packet of tissues from his bag, handing it to the girl with the nosebleed.
“Classmate, it’s probably the heat. You should have a friend take you to the infirmary for a check-up,” he said with a smile.
“Oh my god, these tissues were handed over by Chairman Shen himself! That nosebleed was so worth it!”
The girl’s friend thought she had fainted from excitement after seeing her idol. But just as she was about to speak, her friend suddenly closed her eyes and fainted.
“Chen Jing! Are you okay?!” her friend called out in worry as she held her up.
Cen Jing?
Shen Xinting froze in place as he turned to look at the fainted girl, his expression momentarily dazed.
“Her name… Cen Jing?”
“Yes, Chairman Shen, do you know Chen Jing? Can you help her?” The friend’s anxious tone completely missed the distinction between the two names Shen Xinting had uttered.
Not Cen Jing. Shen Xinting lowered his gaze, momentarily fooled by the similar name.
“Sorry,” Shen Xinting shook his head. “I don’t know your friend, but I can find someone to help send her to the infirmary.”
“Okay, thank you, Chairman Shen!”
After arranging for a few volunteers to take the girl to the infirmary, Shen Xinting sat in Li Jue’s spot, bored, as he watched the incoming freshmen register.
“Shen Xinting, you’re finally here.”
Hearing someone call his name from behind, he turned to look.
“Tomorrow is my birthday, and we’re planning to have barbecue skewers at String Bar. You should come too,” Dong Xinyu said with a smile, brushing her hair back. “Everyone has been working hard welcoming the new students, so treating them to a meal seems appropriate.”
Shen Xinting thought for a moment and then nodded. “Alright, you can handle the arrangements.”
Hearing this, Dong Xinyu’s smile grew even more radiant. “Alright, I’ll send you the address later. Just make sure you’re there by ten tomorrow.”
“Dong Xinyu really lives up to her reputation as S University’s campus belle. She’s so beautiful.”
“Yeah, the two of them look so good together.”
“Hey, I heard they’ve been dating for a while. But since Dong Xinyu’s family is in business and her father is supposedly a mayor or something, her family doesn’t approve, so they haven’t gone public.”
“Really? Where’d you hear that?”
A few girls huddled together, gossiping.
Shen Xinting rested his chin on his hand and glanced at them.
“Aren’t you going to explain things?” his classmate, Xue Yan, asked him.
“Let them say whatever they want. It saves me some trouble; at least no one else will bother me anymore,” Shen Xinting replied.
Xue Yan nodded. “True. Being bothered by one person is better than being pestered by a whole group. I’d make the same choice.”
“But we’re talking about Dong Xinyu here—S University’s acknowledged campus belle. She’s always around you. Aren’t you even a little tempted?”
“Is she that pretty?” Shen Xinting replied nonchalantly. “I think she’s just average.”
“Average?” Xue Yan’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You call that average? Then what do you think makes a real beauty?”
“An oval face, big round almond-shaped eyes, a high nose bridge, and small lips. She should wear her hair in a high ponytail,” Shen Xinting said. “Oh, and she should have a tear mole at the corner of her right eye,” he added.
Seeing him describe someone so vividly, Xue Yan immediately knew such a person must exist. Otherwise, how could he be so detailed?
“No wonder you’ve been rejecting Dong Xinyu. You’ve clearly got someone you like. But if you already like someone, why string Dong Xinyu along? That’s such a scumbag move.”
Shen Xinting gave him a sidelong glance. “I told Dong Xinyu long ago that I have someone I like. She just doesn’t believe me and keeps clinging to me. How is that my fault?”
“You’re turning down Dong Xinyu throwing herself at you?” Xue Yan was stunned. “Now I’m curious about the girl you like. What does she look like?”
“She’s very pretty, that’s all you need to know,” Shen Xinting replied, his expression softening as he thought of Cen Jing in a white dress, smiling at him.
Seeing his friend’s sudden transformation from a sunny boy to a lovestruck dreamer, Xue Yan’s curiosity was piqued, like a cat scratching at his insides.
“Who is she? If she’s at our school, you definitely wouldn’t look so glum all the time. Could she be at another school?” he pressed.
“No, and I don’t even know where he is,” Shen Xinting said, frowning.
Xue Yan was taken aback by the shift from bright to brooding. “Are you in a long-distance relationship?”
“We haven’t even confirmed our relationship.”
“Wait… does she even know you like her?”
“She should know,” Shen Xinting said uncertainly.
Hearing this, Xue Yan’s eyes widened even more.
Damn, amazing! The most handsome guy at S University is secretly in love with someone, and it’s the most pitiful kind—an unrequited crush on someone who’s not even in the country!
Isn’t this a dead end? There’s nowhere to even start pursuing!
After a moment, he asked again, “So what are you going to do? Just keep waiting until she comes back? What if she never comes back?”
Shen Xinting’s hand froze mid-spin with the pen.
“She will come back,” he said firmly.
Noticing his friend’s unusual expression, Xue Yan didn’t press further. He patted Shen Xinting on the shoulder and went back to work.
Shen Xinting lowered his eyes, unlocked his phone, and scrolled through photos of Cen Jing one by one.
One year and three months. When are you coming back?
He gently stroked the smiling face of the “girl” in the photo with his thumb and silently asked.
Cen Jing, no matter how long it takes, I will keep waiting until the day you return.
“Excuse me, senior, could you tell me how to get to Dormitory 6?”
In his daze, he seemed to hear a very familiar voice. He abruptly stood up and looked forward, only to see a head of jet-black hair disappearing into the crowd.
“It’s not him.” He withdrew his gaze and slumped back into the chair, dejected.
“What did you just say? What’s not him?” Xue Yan, busy registering freshmen, asked during a brief pause.
“Nothing,” Shen Xinting said, rubbing his face. His voice was slightly hoarse. “I’m going to wash my face to wake up. Keep an eye on things for me here.”
“Got it.”
The nearest restroom was near Building 3. Shen Xinting didn’t ride his bike and strolled leisurely to the building, turning into the restroom on the first floor.
Inside, Shen Xinting splashed water on his face. The coolness snapped him awake immediately.
“Mom, don’t worry. I’m fine on my own… My health? It’s fine too… Yeah, I know. If I run into trouble, I’ll ask my classmates and teachers for help. I won’t tough it out alone anymore, so don’t worry. Mom, I have something to do now. I’ll hang up first.”
That voice…
It can’t be. Over the past year, he had heard countless voices that sounded similar to Cen Jing’s, but none of them were him…
Shen Xinting froze, not daring to confirm its authenticity, afraid it would once again be a false hope.
He stared blankly into the mirror for a moment until he heard the sound of someone dragging a suitcase and getting ready to leave. Only then did he turn and dash out.
“Huh? Why isn’t it moving? Is the wheel broken?” Outside the restroom, a boy in a blue T-shirt and casual pants bent down to check his suitcase, mumbling softly.
A small doll, about palm-sized, was hanging on his backpack. Its crossed arms and frowning face made it look rather unapproachable.
Shen Xinting’s gaze lingered on the small doll for a long time before he stiffly moved his neck and limbs, walking toward the boy.
“Hello, classmate. Do you need any help?” he asked hoarsely as he stood in front of the boy.
The boy paused, then tilted his head up to look at him.
“If you don’t mind, then I’ll trouble you, senior.” He smiled, his eyes curving.
Shen Xinting rubbed his fingers together, restraining the urge to pull him into a hug. He said warmly, “It’s no trouble. Helping juniors is what we should do.”
“Does senior often help juniors?”
Shen Xinting, squatting to examine the suitcase, froze on the spot.
This was a life-or-death question, and he had to answer carefully.
“Not really. It depends on the person. Most people, I don’t even bother with.”
That answer should be fine, right? He turned his head to sneak a glance at the boy’s expression.
He seemed… pretty happy?
“Really? Senior is so nice; you must have many admirers,” the boy said with a slight smile. “May I ask if senior has a girlfriend or boyfriend?”
“I don’t!” Shen Xinting shook his head furiously. “Neither a girlfriend nor a boyfriend. Not even anyone I’m flirting with!”
“Is that so?” The boy’s smile grew even sweeter. He extended his right hand and said, “Let’s get to know each other. I’m Cen Jing, a transfer exchange student. And you, senior?”
Shen Xinting stood up straight, staring at the familiar face before him for a long time. Finally, he smiled and said, “Hello, I’m Shen Xinting. Nice to meet you, Cen Jing.”
“Likewise.”
The boy’s eyes sparkled with a soft light, and the tear mole at the corner of his eye shimmered under the sunlight, making it hard for anyone to look away.
Shen Xinting’s gaze shifted from the beautiful tear mole to the boy’s slightly smiling eyes.
After a long moment of staring, he could no longer resist. He extended his arms and pulled his Cen Jing tightly into his embrace.
“You’re back.” He kissed the top of the boy’s head, his voice choked with emotion.
“Yeah, I’m back,” Cen Jing said, his eyes reddening.
Shen Xinting: “I missed you so much. Promise me, don’t disappear like that again.”
Cen Jing nodded. He tilted his head up and kissed the boy’s trembling lips, promising, “Alright, I promise. I won’t disappear again. Never.”
“You just kissed me.”
“Yeah, I did.”
“You have to take responsibility,” Shen Xinting said childishly, still holding him tightly.
Cen Jing smiled. “Alright, I’ll take responsibility.”
