Chapter 114: Tang Che vs. Liu Huaijin
While tidying up the attic, Tang Che discovered a locked secret—a notebook covered in creases, looking like it had been around for quite some time.
He sat cross-legged on the tatami mat and tried entering Liu Huaijin’s birthday as the password. It was incorrect.
Then he entered his own birthday. With a click, the notebook opened.
Flipping through the pages, he froze for a few seconds at the familiar handwriting on the title page—”Diary of Observing the Fool Tang Che.”

“September 4, 2011, Sunny
Today is the fourth day of high school. I found out who drove away those thugs on the first day of school. His name is Tang Che, and he’s also a freshman. He has a friend named Fu Tingzhou.
September 6, 2011, Cloudy
I ran into Tang Che in the cafeteria today. He had a lot of tomato and scrambled eggs on his plate, but he only ate the eggs and left the tomatoes untouched.
Being a picky eater isn’t good, and tomatoes are very nutritious. They help the body replenish many trace elements.
I wanted to get to know him, but I was too busy in the afternoon and missed the chance. I’ll tell him next time.
September 12, 2011, Light Rain
It rained today. I didn’t expect to see Tang Che sitting on the bench under the small grove, but when I passed by, there he was—sitting in the rain with a girl.
I overheard Tang Che ask the girl if this was romantic.
I’m not sure about romantic, but it sure looked cold. I heard the girl caught a bad cold and stayed home sick the next day.
Tang Che, this idiot, must’ve watched too many soap operas.
October 1, 2011, Sunny
Today is National Day, and the school had a holiday. Since we had to work on student council matters together, I finally managed to join Tang Che and Fu Tingzhou’s little duo.
After getting closer, I realized how naïve Tang Che is. He often gets tricked by girls into spending money and getting emotionally attached. It’s obvious these girls are after his money, but he still stupidly believes they’re genuine.
Oh, and today, a girl confessed to that fool Tang Che, but I saw her kissing another boy on the track field yesterday.
Recently, Fu Tingzhou’s family seems to be facing some problems. It looks like Tang Che hasn’t realized his good friend is being taken advantage of.
I’ve decided—I’ll talk to that girl tomorrow.
October 2, 2011, Overcast
I contacted the girl on social media and invited her out.
Her name is Li Jiatian. She’s sweet to the point of being cloying—name, personality, and everything.
I can’t understand why Tang Che likes such girls. Cute? Not really.
We met at a café. She thought I was confessing to her, and she started hinting I could kiss her.
I…
I think I now understand why Tang Che likes ‘open’ girls.”
—
Tang Che fell silent for half a minute.
He remembered that girl seemed so shy back then, the kind who blushed just from holding hands.
His legs were going numb. Changing positions, he continued reading.

“October 8, 2011, Sunny
The talk worked. That sugary girl got scared her multiple boyfriends would find out and retaliate, so after school resumed, she stayed away from Tang Che.
The idiot cried over this and said he wanted to skip class to get drunk. After Fu Tingzhou and I gave him a good lecture, he finally dropped the idea.
October 13, 2011, Overcast to Heavy Rain
The weather forecast said it would drizzle today, but it ended up pouring.
I forgot my umbrella and was waiting for the family driver in the school gate security booth.
I was half-asleep when I suddenly saw Tang Che running through the rain, holding his jacket over a girl’s head.
The girl was a class beauty in white, like a delicate flower from a greenhouse.
I thought maybe Tang Che finally got it right this time. I hoped this relationship would last.
October 20, 2011, Overcast
The relationship lasted a week. Tang Che found out the girl liked Fu Tingzhou and only dated him to get close to Fu Tingzhou.
In just twelve days, Tang Che once again tasted the bitterness of love.
October 25, 2011, Sunny
They say, ‘Learn from your mistakes.’
I thought Tang Che would avoid dating for a while, but five days later, he told us he was in love again.
Sigh. I wonder how this girl will turn out. This fool really makes people worry.”
—
Tang Che: “…”
Was I really that obsessed with dating in high school? Even I feel like slapping myself now.
He flipped through a few more pages and stopped at an entry from sophomore year.
—
“May 7, 2012, Sunny
Tang Che saw me talking to his latest girlfriend and misunderstood, thinking I wanted to steal her. He said he’d cut ties with me in front of Fu Tingzhou.
I don’t understand. Are girlfriends more important than brothers? Especially girlfriends who are fickle and untrustworthy?
What I don’t understand even more is why, knowing how unreliable Tang Che is, I can’t help but like him.
Should I confess? No. Tang Che is straight—so straight he’d never reciprocate. If I confess, we won’t even be friends anymore.
June 13, 2012, Sunny
I took another girlfriend of Tang Che’s—technically, she came to me after I casually mentioned my dad was the hospital director.
Tang Che is angrier at me now, glaring from a distance like I’m going to bite him. He only acts normal around Fu Tingzhou.
Honestly, I don’t care much. I never had high hopes for this one-sided affection anyway. Maybe one day, I’ll just stop liking him and be able to leave peacefully.
December 6, 2012, Light Snow
We had plans to watch a movie together, but Tang Che brought a girl along. He said it was a coincidence, but I didn’t believe it.
After the movie, he took the bus to escort her home.
On my way back, I couldn’t help but imagine them holding hands or kissing under the dim streetlights.
It hurt just thinking about it.
Liu Huaijin, why do you torture yourself by liking someone like this? Fu Tingzhou is much better—if only I liked him instead, maybe it wouldn’t hurt so much.”
—
Tang Che: “Old Fu? He’s great, sure, but he’s so oblivious he’d never even get romantic with anyone. If you’d picked him, you’d just be single forever!”
He kept reading.
—
“April 1, 2013, Overcast
Tang Che suddenly asked me this morning if I liked him.
I thought he finally realized how much I cared and was ready to give us a chance. But I forgot it was April Fool’s Day.
Just as I was about to nod, he said he was straight, so straight I should give up on him entirely.
From that day on, Tang Che started acting differently.
September 10, 2013, Sunny
Tang Che is still avoiding me. He looks at me like I’m some predator about to pounce, even sleeping bundled up like a cocoon.
Not that he needs to worry. I don’t like men who don’t shower before bed—too smelly.”
—
Tang Che froze, utterly stunned.
“Liu Huaijin! You said you only ever liked me! Then how do you know what other men smell like? Who did you—”
His thoughts cut off as he read the next entry.
—
“December 8, 2013, Light Rain
We slept together.”
This was my first time.
Damn it, it hurt so much. Who was the bastard who said proper foreplay would make it painless? Damn it, it hurt like hell!
Tang Che, that damn straight guy, says he doesn’t like men, so why did he do it so many times last night?
That virgin still dared to claim he was experienced and would blow my mind. To hell with you!
—
Tang Che: “…”
Knowing it was their first time for both of them made him quite happy, but being told by his wife that his skills were terrible? That hurt too much!
—
February 16, 2014, Heavy Snow
Since that night, Tang Che’s attitude toward me has changed a lot. He feels he owes me something. Every time he sees me, he acts like a mouse encountering a cat—either avoiding me or obeying my every word. I say one thing, and he wouldn’t dare say two. Even if he’s upset, he doesn’t dare show it in front of me.
On Valentine’s Day, Tang Che broke precedent and gave me a bouquet of flowers. I was thrilled and thought I had finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. But it turned out the real reason behind it was to ask me to stop stealing his girlfriends.
I was furious and almost threw the flowers straight into the trash. But it was the first gift Tang Che had ever given me, and I couldn’t bear to do it. I took them back to the dorm and placed them by my bed, keeping them there for several days until they wilted, at which point I reluctantly threw them away.
—
Inside the notebook was a long-dried rose petal, now somewhat transparent. Tang Che carefully picked it up and sniffed it. A faint fragrance lingered, and in an instant, he was transported back to that night when he had bought the flowers.
Anxiety, excitement, and unease—emotions he hadn’t paid much attention to at the time. Now, he finally understood what they were.
It was affection, a shy and unacknowledged affection.

March 27, 2014, Sunny
Tang Che hasn’t been chasing girls lately. Since Tingzhou’s family incident, the three of us have been spending less time together.
Yesterday, we had dinner at Liu Chun Yuan. Tingzhou looked gaunt, his eye sockets deeply sunken, with heavy dark circles under his eyes. He seemed utterly exhausted—nothing like the confident, spirited young man he had been a few months ago.
I thought that maybe it was because of Tingzhou that Tang Che had suddenly matured.

May 6, 2014, Overcast
After my relationship with Tang Che improved, I began trying to reform him.
First, in how to judge people—who to pursue and who not to pursue.
Second, in the techniques of courting.
Lastly, in how two people should interact in a relationship.
Tang Che thought I was knowledgeable and assumed I had dated many times before. He didn’t know that I’d never dated anyone. But I’m not stupid—I haven’t eaten pork, but I’ve seen pigs run. Even if I don’t have firsthand experience, these are simple concepts anyone can grasp. He didn’t get it. If I were one of those girls, I’d also scam someone like him—naïve, wealthy, and gullible.
Of course, there are still plenty of issues between us. Sometimes, a single accidental glance can send Tang Che into a panic.
That’s fine. Let him feel like he owes me forever. That way, maybe he’ll remember me a little longer.
Secretly, I’ll admit—I could’ve escaped that night, but I didn’t.
Oh, and Tang Che’s skills were terrible. Awful!!
—
Tang Che: “…”
Enough! Don’t think that just because you’re secretly complaining about my skills in your diary, I won’t find out. Wait till you get home—we’ll settle this once and for all!

Lately, Tang Che has taken a liking to a senior girl in her third year. The senior has a habit of reading early in the morning. Despite his usual dislike for waking up early, Tang Che now rises before dawn to buy breakfast and save a seat for her in the reading hall.
I joked with Tingzhou, saying he wouldn’t last long, but deep down, I knew this time was different.
Xi Yan was special to Tang Che. Apart from her, it seemed like no one else mattered in his eyes anymore.
Was it time to let go?
—
October 30, 2014, Light Rain
After more than a month of pursuit and meticulous care, Tang Che finally won Xi Yan over. I saw them holding hands at the entrance to the girls’ dormitory. Xi Yan smiled as she adjusted his collar and watched him leave.
My heart hurt so much. I suddenly couldn’t understand why I was doing all this—transforming him into the best version of himself, only to watch him leave me?
What should I do? I think I’m becoming increasingly greedy. I don’t want Tang Che to leave my side!
No, I can’t let him!
—
November 24, 2014, Heavy Snow
It was the first snow of the year, falling quickly and heavily, blanketing everything in just an hour.
I had someone bring Xi Yan out. Then, I did something terrible to this kind-hearted girl.
I told Xi Yan that Tang Che and I had slept together.
I knew girls cared deeply about these things. Sure enough, as soon as Xi Yan heard, her tears started falling immediately.
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry…”
Three full pages of “I’m sorry” left Tang Che with red, teary eyes.
“You idiot. It wasn’t your fault. It was me. It was my failure to recognize my feelings in time, making you wait all those years, endure so much pain, and almost ruin Xi Yan’s life.”
He spoke with a choked voice, his eyes wet with emotion.
—
“Tang Che, where are you?”
Downstairs, Liu Huaijin’s voice broke the silence. Tang Che quickly locked the notebook and returned it to its place.
“Coming!”
“You went to the attic?” Liu Huaijin asked as he saw him come down.
“Yeah, I thought I’d help tidy it up since I had some free time. But before I could finish, you came back,” Tang Che said with a cheeky grin, wrapping his arms around him as they headed to the dining room. “Come on, I made your favorite spicy chicken. But don’t eat too much—we’ve got activities later tonight.”
“Activities?” Liu Huaijin eyed him warily.
“Just eat first. I’ll tell you after dinner,” Tang Che said, pulling out a chair and sitting him down at the table.
—
After dinner, while Tang Che was in the shower, Liu Huaijin took the chance to sneak into the attic.
“This fool.” He brought down a box and noticed the notebook inside had been tampered with. He chuckled.
—
“Babe, we’re out of body wash. Where’s the one we bought last time?” Tang Che’s voice came from the bathroom.
“Honey? Babe? Where are you?”
Liu Huaijin put the notebook back and went downstairs, hearing Tang Che calling him from the bathroom.
“It’s in the drawer next to you. Open it, and you’ll find it,” he replied.
A moment later, the bathroom door opened, and Tang Che stuck out half his body, looking innocent. “Where? It’s not in the drawer. Can you come in and help me find it?”
Liu Huaijin turned, immediately spotting the deliberately exposed six-pack abs.
“Oh, I might’ve put it elsewhere. Wait, I’ll come in and help you look.”
Tang Che got excited. “Okay, hurry up!”
