Chapter 115: Tang Che vs. Liu Huaijin
At the street corner, Tang Che walked out of a flower shop holding a bouquet of vibrant roses.
Today was May 20th, also the seventh anniversary of his marriage to Liu Huaijin. He wanted to surprise Liu Huaijin.
“Hey, honey, do you have any surgeries scheduled tonight?” he asked over the phone, pulling his mobile out of his pocket.
On the other end, Liu Huaijin’s slightly tired voice came through. “Let me check… Xiao Li, do I have anything tonight? No? Okay, thanks.”
“No surgeries tonight, why?”
“I’ll pick you up tonight. You’ve been busy with surgeries these days and haven’t eaten properly. Let’s go for a nice dinner,” Tang Che said with a smile.
“Sure.” Liu Huaijin chuckled, “Come at four. I don’t have anything this afternoon, so I can leave early.”
“Alright, wait for me.”
After hanging up, Tang Che checked the time. There were still two hours left until four. With nothing else to do, he decided to head to the hospital early to surprise Liu Huaijin.
Tang Che arrived before three o’clock. Since he frequently came to pick up Liu Huaijin, most of the doctors and nurses recognized him. Seeing him with a bouquet of flowers, they teased him about how loving he and Dr. Liu were.
He greeted everyone warmly and made his way straight to Liu Huaijin’s office.
“Huaijin, it’s been years, but you haven’t changed a bit.”
Just as he was about to push open the door, a man’s voice came through the crack, stopping him in his tracks. His eyelid twitched nervously.
“How could I not change? But you, senior, I remember you were quite thin when you went abroad. Now you look much more built. Have you been working out abroad?”
“Haha, you noticed? I’ve been working out lately, even got a six-pack. Want to feel it?”
Hearing the conversation, Tang Che felt a chill run through him. Was he about to be cheated on?
Suddenly, there was a rustling sound from inside, like someone undressing. Tang Che’s face darkened, and he kicked the door open.
“What are you doing…” He stormed in with a dark expression, ready to question them, only to see two people sitting across the desk, fully clothed. He swallowed his words.
“May I ask who you are?” The man sitting across from Liu Huaijin looked up at him.
The next moment, the stranger suddenly got excited. “You’re Tang Che, right? You’re Tang Che!”
Tang Che looked confused. “Uh, yeah, I am. Do I know you?”
“Of course! Don’t you remember me? I’m Ji Qiuming, a year ahead of you.” Ji Qiuming stood up, walked around Tang Che twice, and even squeezed his arm. “So solid. I wish I could train to your level.”
“Ji Qiuming?” Tang Che had no recollection of the name.
“Yeah, during your second year, I recorded your high jump at the sports meet. You almost broke the school record, but then you ran off to watch Xi Yan’s gymnastics routine right after.”
Tang Che panicked, quickly turning to Liu Huaijin. “Don’t listen to him! I was so innocent back then. I don’t even remember Xi Yan being in gymnastics.”
Ji Qiuming looked puzzled. “You don’t? But I clearly saw you go to her.”
“Are you here for a checkup or just to chat? If it’s for a checkup, you’re welcome. If it’s to chat, I’m sorry, but we’re busy.” Tang Che looked at Ji Qiuming with suspicion. “There are other patients waiting. Take the left exit. Goodbye.”
“Oh, right, almost forgot he’s still on duty.” Ji Qiuming waved at Liu Huaijin with a smile. “You’re busy, I’ll leave now. Let’s catch up next time.”
Liu Huaijin nodded. “Sure.”
After Ji Qiuming left, Tang Che crossed his arms, sulking.
“What were you talking about just now?”
“Not much. Senior Ji just got back from abroad and happened to come for a physical. We ran into each other and exchanged a few words.” Liu Huaijin began tidying his desk. “Wait for me a bit, I’ll finish up and we can go.”
“Just a few words? Didn’t sound like it to me.” Tang Che pouted, his jealousy obvious. “He even wanted you to feel his abs. If you’d chatted any longer, I’d be wearing a whole grassland on my head.”
Hearing this, Liu Huaijin smiled, gesturing for him to come closer.
“What?”
“Come here.”
“I’m warning you, I’m upset right now. You’d better confess everything, or else.” Tang Che straightened up but walked over nonetheless.
Liu Huaijin stood up, pulled him to the desk, and pinched his chin with a sly smile. “Jealous?”
“Who’s jealous? That little weakling couldn’t take a punch from me.” He stubbornly denied it.
“Really?” Liu Huaijin raised a brow. “Honestly, Senior Ji has a decent build. If I get a chance, I’d love to—”
“Don’t even think about it!” Tang Che grabbed Liu Huaijin’s waist and held him tightly. With a dark expression, he declared, “What’s so great about his weakling body? And don’t forget, your husband has abs too. You can feel them whenever you want.” He took Liu Huaijin’s hand and pressed it against his stomach.
“Almost eight-pack now. Just give me some more time to train.” He bit Liu Huaijin’s earlobe and said with a dangerous, seductive tone, “Don’t think about other men. Not even in your dreams. Or you’ll see what happens.”
“Mm—” A gasp escaped as his Adam’s apple was suddenly nibbled, making Liu Huaijin hum involuntarily.
Tang Che mischievously licked the spot he’d bitten. “Making noise? Aren’t you afraid someone might hear you outside?”
“If you’re not scared, why should I be?” Liu Huaijin looped his arms around Tang Che’s neck, his eyes slightly red with passion. “Even if someone sees, they’d think you forced me.”
“Exactly. Dr. Liu, such an ethical doctor, would never fool around in the office.” Tang Che kissed his neck. “And if Dr. Liu isn’t afraid, neither am I.”
He whispered into his ear, “Happy seventh anniversary, honey. Thanks for the gift—I’m very satisfied.”
With that, he lifted Liu Huaijin onto the desk, stepped between his legs, and began undoing his belt.
Liu Huaijin stiffened, thinking he was serious. His eyes filled with panic.
“Don’t, honey, I was wrong.” He cupped Tang Che’s face, kissed his lips, and said, “Who else could I think about besides you? Besides, Senior Ji is married. Didn’t you notice the ring on his finger?”
Tang Che, who had been too focused on catching infidelity to notice the wedding ring: “…”
“Seeing as you admitted your mistake so sincerely, I’ll forgive you this time.” Tang Che wisely seized the opportunity to back down.
“Wow, my husband is so reasonable.” Liu Huaijin laughed, his gaze landing on the bouquet of roses by the door. Surprised, he asked, “Did you buy this?”
“Yeah.” Tang Che fetched the flowers and handed them over. “Ninety-nine roses, symbolizing eternal love.”
“They’re beautiful.” Liu Huaijin held the bouquet, looking delighted. “Thank you.”
Tang Che stretched out his hand. “Where’s my gift?”
Liu Huaijin: “I’ve already prepared it for you, but you’ll have to wait until we get home.”
“Alright, can you leave work now? Let’s head home,” Tang Che checked his watch, unable to hide his excitement.
“I can. Let me let Xiao Li and the others know first,” Liu Huaijin replied.
The two lived not too far from the hospital; it was only a half-hour drive.
On the way back, Tang Che kept probing, trying to figure out what surprise Liu Huaijin had prepared for him. However, his wife was tight-lipped. Even after they arrived home, Tang Che hadn’t gotten a single useful clue.
“Where’s the gift you prepared for me? Where did you hide it?” Once home, Tang Che trailed closely behind Liu Huaijin, asking eagerly.
Finding Tang Che’s eagerness amusing, Liu Huaijin deliberately took his time. He undressed slowly, claimed to be thirsty, and then wanted to eat an orange. After stalling for ages, he finally brought out the gift.
“Here, I’m going to shower. Don’t open it until I’m gone,” Liu Huaijin said, his ears slightly red.
Tang Che nodded obediently. Once Liu Huaijin left, he opened the box to find two pairs of exquisite cufflinks, their designs different but equally intricate.
He picked one up and examined it closely. The more he looked at it, the more familiar it seemed.
“These patterns… they look like something I’ve seen before…” He frowned, trying to recall. After a moment, his eyes lit up.
He remembered seeing the same designs on sketches in Liu Huaijin’s study. Back then, he had wondered when his wife had started drawing, not realizing they were part of a secret plan to make him a gift.
“Huh? There’s a letter underneath.” Setting the cufflinks aside, Tang Che retrieved the envelope hidden under the box’s base.
—
Happy seventh anniversary, Tang Tang.
There are some things I find hard to say in person, so I’m putting them in this letter.
You’ve probably already seen the notebook in the attic, haven’t you?
Honestly, you’re not the type I usually go for. You’re full of flaws—your temper, your sharp tongue, and your terrible taste in people. If it weren’t for the day you charged into the alley to rescue me from that gang of delinquents, I don’t think we’d have ever crossed paths.
Upset? Don’t be. I’m just telling the truth. 😊
Maybe it was fate that brought us together—two people who should never have met.
At first, I was simply grateful for what you did. But you were so naive, so easily tricked, that I decided to stay by your side until you matured and became less gullible. But when that day finally came, I realized I couldn’t bear to let you go.
You’ll never know how conflicted I was during that time.
Oh, and there’s something I owe you an apology for. Remember that drunken night during our first year of college? It wasn’t entirely your fault—I was still sober at the time. I may have been a little scheming and only booked one room on purpose.
Also, your technique wasn’t terrible. It only hurt at first; it got much better later.
That’s all I’ll admit to this year. The rest will have to wait until next year. 😊
Yours,
Huaijin

After reading the letter, Tang Che’s heart twisted, bittersweet emotions flooding him. He felt both heartache and gratitude—heartache for everything Liu Huaijin had silently endured and gratitude that he never gave up on their relationship.
Placing the letter on the table, he turned and headed toward the bathroom.
Inside, Liu Huaijin was soaking in the tub. When he heard the door open, he froze for a moment.
“Why did you come in?” he asked, his ears tinged with red.
Tang Che didn’t answer. He pulled up a stool, sat down by the tub, and rested his arms on the edge, staring intently at the man inside.
“Wife, those cufflinks—did you design them yourself?”
Hearing this, Liu Huaijin averted his gaze, a bit embarrassed, and nodded. “Mm.”
“They’re beautiful. I love them. I also saw the engraving on the back.” Tang Che leaned down and kissed Liu Huaijin’s steam-flushed lips, his voice husky. “I love you too.”
Gripping Liu Huaijin’s chin, he forced him to tilt his head, exposing the delicate curve of his pale neck.
“Mm…” Liu Huaijin shuddered, instinctively gripping Tang Che’s arm to steady himself in the water.
—
The sound of running water in the bathroom didn’t cease until late at night.
Liu Huaijin, utterly spent, clung limply to Tang Che’s neck as the latter carried him out.
As his hand brushed against something different, Liu Huaijin lifted his left hand and noticed that the ring on his ring finger had been replaced with a new design.
“I had it custom-made, with our names engraved on the inside,” Tang Che said, placing him gently on the bed. Kissing his lips, he asked, “Do you like it?”
Liu Huaijin nodded, his face glowing with happiness. “I like it.”
“Good.” Tang Che pulled him into his arms. Then, a teasing smile played on his lips as he said, “You still have things to confess, don’t you? I can’t wait until next year. Start now.”
Liu Huaijin: “…”
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Tang Che looked down and saw that his wife had fallen asleep, his profile peaceful. Tang Che’s heart softened.
“Alright, I’ll let you off the hook tonight,” he murmured, kissing Liu Huaijin’s forehead gently.
“Goodnight.”
