- Chapter 18 - Meeting of Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law
“Boss, go to Yun City Hospital. Dr. Liu has already made arrangements there!” Just as Fu Tingzhou had put the person in the car, Secretary Yang’s call came in promptly.
“Okay.”
After hanging up the phone, he glanced at the teenager in the passenger seat, holding his abdomen protectively, his brows slightly furrowed, feeling as if his heart was being squeezed tightly, discomfort evident.
“Yun Xing, endure a little longer. We’ll be at the hospital soon,” he said hoarsely.
“Mm. I’m not afraid, Mr. Fu, you don’t need to be afraid either,” Shen Yunxing looked at the man with open eyes, trying hard not to fall asleep, “Mr. Fu, both the baby and I will be fine.”
Fu Tingzhou gently stroked the boy’s forehead, feeling his touch icy cold, yet covered in a layer of fine sweat. Fu Tingzhou’s face darkened, and without showing any sign, he accelerated the speed of the car.
…
One hour later, in the VIP ward of Yun City Hospital.
Shen Yunxing lay on the hospital bed, not waiting for the doctor to finish the examination, he anxiously asked, “Doctor, is the baby okay?”
The doctor conducting the examination was an old professor specializing in male childbirth. Upon hearing his inquiry about the baby’s condition, he immediately frowned and glared at him.
“As someone who’s about to become a father, why are you still so reckless? Knowing that your physical condition is not good, yet you’re running around everywhere. This level of exercise might not be a big deal for other pregnant women, but not for you. This time, it’s just luck, combined with the baby’s extraordinary resilience, that nothing happened. If there’s a next time, you’ll be leaving the hospital in tears.”
Shen Yunxing’s face turned pale as he listened, biting his lip and touching his slightly protruding abdomen, feeling overwhelmed with guilt.
“Professor Chen,” seeing the old man about to say more, Fu Tingzhou frowned and interrupted, “I’ll take care of him here. You can go back to your duties.”
“Fine, youngsters nowadays are something else.” Professor Chen sighed, then clasped his hands behind his back and left the ward.
The boy lying in the hospital bed held his hands over his abdomen, his face filled with pain and self-blame, causing Fu Tingzhou’s heart to ache. He sat by the bedside, placing his hand over the boy’s, his voice soft and tender.
“It’s alright now. The baby is a good child and won’t blame you.”
“Mr. Fu.” He reached out and hugged the man tightly, nuzzling against his waist.
Mr. Fu’s voice seemed to carry a magical power. He had been consoling himself for a long time to no avail, yet Mr. Fu managed to calm him down with just one sentence.
“Go to sleep, I’ll be here watching over you.” Fu Tingzhou stroked the boy’s dark hair at the back of his head.
Shen Yunxing shook his head, but his eyes closed wearily.
“Mr. Fu…” He mumbled unintelligibly as he hugged the man.
“Mm,” Fu Tingzhou murmured softly in response.
A moment later, he looked down to see the young man half-lying in his arms, already fast asleep.
At six o’clock in the afternoon, the three people who had lost contact with Shen Yunxing called Fu Tingzhou.
“Big Brother Fu, did Yun Xing go back? We were supposed to watch a play together this afternoon. We were so engrossed that we didn’t realize Yun Xing was missing until we came to our senses. We couldn’t reach him by phone, so we called you,” Li Mu said apologetically.
Fu Tingzhou: “Yun Xing wasn’t feeling well, so I took him home early. Sorry, I forgot to inform you.”
“Big Brother Fu, you’re too polite. As long as Yun Xing is okay, that’s all that matters. If something happened to him, the few of us wouldn’t be able to compensate for it even if we sold ourselves,” Li Mu joked.
“By the way, is Yun Xing okay?”
“He’s fine, just had a bit of low blood sugar, he’ll be fine after some rest.”
“As long as he’s okay. Please tell Yun Xing to take good care of himself. We’re all very worried about him.”
“Okay.”
After the call ended, Fu Tingzhou looked at the boy with a bit of color returning to his cheeks, pinching the bridge of his nose wearily.
He had worked on tasks until midnight last night, only slept for two hours before getting up to make breakfast for the boy, then had four hours of consecutive meetings during the day. After receiving the boy’s call, his mind had been highly tense. Now that he relaxed, he felt utterly exhausted.
A moment later, he adjusted the boy in his arms to a comfortable position, blinked his heavy eyelids a couple of times, and fell into a deep sleep himself.
…
The next day, when Shen Yunxing opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was Mr. Fu’s slightly greenish stubbled profile.
His heart skipped a beat, holding his breath, he openly stared at the handsome face of the man.
Hmm, Mr. Fu’s eyelashes are so long, his nose is high, and his lips… his lips are pink.
He stared for a while, before quickly shifting his gaze away before his cheeks turned red.
Oh, Mr. Fu’s eyelids are moving, is he waking up?
He was startled and quickly closed his eyes, pretending to sleep. But after waiting for a while, Mr. Fu didn’t wake up. He cautiously opened one eye to sneak a peek, only to find Mr. Fu still deeply asleep. Feeling bolder, he reached out his finger and lightly poked Mr. Fu’s thick eyelashes.
The first poke didn’t wake him up.
Nor did the second one.
As he contemplated poking for the third time, his finger was caught by the man.
Shen Yunxing was stunned for a moment, then his cheeks flushed.
“Are you awake? Is there anything uncomfortable?” The latter’s eyes were not fully open yet, as he reached out to touch the boy’s abdomen, his thumb naturally caressing it twice.
Shen Yunxing blushed, shaking his head slightly. “Nothing uncomfortable.”
He couldn’t tell if it was an illusion, but the warmth of the man’s palm seemed to be slightly higher than his body temperature. The places touched by the man’s hand felt hot but comfortable, making him unconsciously want more.
“Mr. Fu, the baby said he wants you to touch him again…” He buried his head in the man’s chest, his cheeks red as blood.
Fu Tingzhou’s hand paused for a moment, fully awake now.
“And what about you?” he asked, his voice slightly hoarse.
Shen Yunxing’s face remained flushed all the way to the base of his neck, and he buried his head in the man’s embrace like an ostrich, not making a sound.
Fu Tingzhou chuckled softly. Although he didn’t get a response from the boy, he still fulfilled the “baby’s” request.
The two of them lay there for a while, until the sound of Secretary Yang’s high-heeled shoes echoed outside the ward. Shen Yunxing finally stopped pretending to be an ostrich, blushing as he withdrew from the man’s embrace. He pretended as if nothing had happened, calmly adjusting the hospital gown that was almost rolled up to his chest.
Secretary Yang knocked on the door and entered, noticing one person with a lingering blush on his face and the other with a slight smirk in his eyes.
Secretary Yang stared suspiciously at the two back and forth for a few times, noticing that the cute one’s neck was pure white and clean, and his eyes didn’t look like he had been crying. Only then did he relax.
He didn’t eat, it seemed that his boss hadn’t reached the point of being worse than a beast.
“Boss, breakfast is here.”
“Mm.” Fu Tingzhou nodded, taking out a bowl of lean pork and salted egg congee from the bag and opened the lid to test the temperature on the back of his hand.
Secretary Yang: “?”
Feeling something odd, he looked again.
“The temperature is just right.” After testing the temperature, Fu Tingzhou scooped up a spoonful and offered it to the boy’s lips.
Shen Yunxing felt a bit uncomfortable under the gaze of Secretary Yang, his face flushing even more. “I can do it myself,” he said quickly, taking the bowl of congee and burying himself in eating.
However, because of being too nervous, he almost choked on it.
“Cough, cough, cough—”Â
Fu Tingzhou reached for two tissue papers from the side and handed them over, frowning and lecturing, “Be more careful next time.”
“I’m sorry, I promise I won’t do this again next time.”
The boy coughed, his eyes and nose red from the coughing, looking pitiful. Fu Tingzhou couldn’t bear to lecture him further, so he could only shake his head helplessly.
Secretary Yang, who observed their interaction: “…”
What kind of father-son relationship dynamic is this!?
Boss, the one leaning against you is your little wife, not your son!
“Father Fu” spoils the child endlessly, letting “Shen Baby” continue sleeping after breakfast.
After tucking the boy in, Fu Tingzhou glanced sideways at the person behind him.
Secretary Yang’s body trembled slightly, quickly retracting his gaze.
“Yun Xing isn’t suitable for school these days. Handle the matters with the school,” Fu Tingzhou instructed.
Secretary Yang nodded, “Okay, boss, I’ll go get the medical certificate!” After speaking, she left the ward on her high heels.
…
“So boring.” Shen Yunxing lay on the sofa, feeling like he was growing moss out of boredom.
Ever since he had a stomachache and went to the hospital that day, Mr. Fu had taken a week off for him. During these days, he had been at home either eating or sleeping, feeling like he was turning into a pig, with his belly gaining quite a bit of weight.
He pinched his belly with frustration, envious of Mr. Fu’s firm abdominal muscles.
Mr. Fu had touched his stomach many times, but Shen Yunxing had only touched Mr. Fu’s abs once in the hospital.
Hmm, he felt like he was missing out.
The more he thought about it, the more regretful he felt. Rolling half a circle on the sofa in his frustration, when he was about to fall off, he was firmly held by a pair of strong arms.
“Mr. Fu, you’re back,” he said, blinking at the man, trying to please him.
Fu Tingzhou: “…” Falling for this trick again.
“Are you bored?” he asked helplessly.
Shen Yunxing nodded, looking a bit downcast. “I’m the only one at home.”
“I’m sorry, I’ve been busy these past few days. I’ll make sure to spend more time with you in the future.” Fu Tingzhou ruffled the boy’s short hair, his tone tinged with guilt.
“No, Mr. Fu has already done a lot for me.” Shen Yunxing tugged at the man’s clothes, his face full of disagreement.
Fu Tingzhou smiled. “After dinner, would you like to go for a walk together?”
“Okay!”
The boy’s eyes curved with happiness, looking extremely charming.
To cheer the boy up, Fu Tingzhou specially cooked several dishes. The latter ate with delight, repeatedly praising, “Mr. Fu is so amazing,” which made Fu Tingzhou feel extremely pleased, almost floating.
After dinner, he led the boy downstairs for a walk as promised.
The Huating neighborhood was quiet with few people around. The two of them strolled around the compound, encountering fewer than five people in total.
Among them, Grandma Liu especially liked Shen Yunxing. She chatted with him for a while and even gave him a bag of homemade green tea when they parted ways, warmly inviting him to come again next time, holding Shen Yunxing’s hand.
“Grandma Liu is so nice. She even gave me a bag of tea.” Shen Yunxing was ecstatic, swinging the bag of tea leaves in his hand, showing off to Fu Tingzhou, “Mr. Fu, Grandma Liu only gave it to me, not you.”
“Yeah, because you’re more likable than me.” Fu Tingzhou smiled.
“It’s not true, all the girls at your company like you.” Shen Yunxing glanced at the handsome profile of the man beside him, muttering softly with his head down.
“Hmm? What are you mumbling about?”
“Nothing.” He looked at the tea leaves in his hand and suddenly remembered something. “Mr. Fu, can I drink this tea?”
Fu Tingzhou nodded. “Yes, you can.”
Shen Yunxing’s eyes lit up. “Great, I won’t disappoint Grandma Liu’s kindness. Let’s go back and brew it!”
“Okay,” Fu Tingzhou agreed with a smile.
…
“Get up, or Baby’s going to make a fuss! Get up, or Baby’s going to make a fuss!”
Shen Yunxing reached out to turn off the alarm clock, then lazily stretched with his eyes closed.
Today was the last day of his sick leave and also the day when Auntie Sun came to Yun City. He deliberately set an alarm clock, wanting to leave a good impression on Auntie Sun.
But it seemed to have failed…
He sat at the dining table in his pajamas, his ears turning red.
“Good boy, I heard Tingzhou say you really like the chicken soup I make. Auntie came on the early bus today and made a big pot for you. Just wait, Auntie will bring it over to you.”
“Thank you, Auntie Sun.” Shen Yunxing thanked her obediently. When Auntie Sun turned around and went into the kitchen, he glared angrily at the man beside him.
“I have no idea either. Auntie Sun changed the ticket herself.” Mr. Fu shrugged, indicating that he was innocent.
Shen Yunxing’s cheeks deflated after puffing up for a few seconds. He grabbed the corner of his sleeping gown and sighed softly.
“This is also cute. Didn’t you see how Auntie Sun kept smiling when she saw you, she has never smiled at me like that.” Fu Tingzhou held the boy’s hand, comforting him.
Shen Yunxing believed him, gradually getting lost in the expanding praises from Auntie Sun. He even started to ignore Mr. Fu.
“Good boy, if Tingzhou dares to bully you in the future, come and tell Auntie, Auntie will scold him for you.” Auntie Sun held Shen Yunxing’s hand, expressing her concern. “Why are you so thin? Too thin.”
“Yeah, okay.” Shen Yunxing glanced provocatively at the man.
Instead of getting angry, the latter looked at him with indulgence.
The boy’s expression was lively and cute, his smile like a little sun, brightening every corner of his heart.
“Good boy, why do you call Tingzhou Mr. Fu?” Auntie Sun finally noticed something amiss. She put her hands on her hips, staring disapprovingly at Fu Tingzhou. “Tell me, did you bully Good Boy?”
The latter sighed helplessly.
Fine, it seemed like he was taking the blame today.
“No, Mr. Fu didn’t bully me.” Seeing Mr. Fu being misunderstood, Shen Yunxing quickly waved his hand to explain.
“Didn’t bully you?” Auntie Sun looked suspicious.
Shen Yunxing shook his head. “No, Mr. Fu is very good to me.”
Auntie Sun still had some doubts, but then remembered something she had accidentally seen online that day and blushed slightly.
Could it be that there’s something going on between them?
Glancing at the two of them, she confirmed her guess when she saw the increasingly red tips of the boy’s ears.
These young people nowadays are really something. She even saw someone calling their boyfriend “uncle” online. What kind of address is that? The relationships are all messed up!
“I won’t say anymore. Hurry up and drink the soup. Auntie stewed it for two whole hours, and the meat is all tender now.”
“Okay.”
Thus, when Shen Yunxing and “Mother-in-law” met, the tense atmosphere of confrontation did not occur. He treated Auntie Sun as if he had known her for a long time, and she had already treated him as family even before meeting him.
