- Chapter 50: It's Time to End It
Worried about his mother, Shen Yunxing didn’t sleep well all night and got up early the next morning to return to Lin’an with Mr. Fu.
At nine in the morning, Shen’s father heard the doorbell and, upon opening the door, was momentarily surprised to see his younger son standing there.
“Dad, where’s Mom? Is her injury serious?” Shen Yunxing asked anxiously.
“Don’t worry, your mom is in the bedroom. Her injury isn’t severe, it just looks worse than it is,” Shen’s father said, patting his younger son’s shoulder. “Your brother will be here by noon.”
“Brother is coming back too?”
“Yes, he said he’s coming back to fetch something.”
Shen Yunxing nodded and quickly made his way to the bedroom. Upon entering, he saw his mother lying in bed with a thick plaster cast on her left leg, looking quite haggard.
His heart ached, and his eyes turned red.
“Why did you come back? If I had known, I wouldn’t have called you last night,” Shen’s mother said, seeing her son’s reddened eyes and realizing he was about to cry. “Alright, stop crying. I’m fine. It’s just a minor sprain. A few days of rest at home will be enough.”
“A sprain requires such a thick cast?” Shen Yunxing wasn’t a child and could tell his mother was trying to reassure him.
“I’m really fine,” Shen’s mother said, changing the topic. “Son, you haven’t had breakfast yet, have you? I’ll have your father make you something delicious.”
“Old Shen, our son hasn’t eaten yet. Go buy some pork ribs. Xingxing loves braised ribs.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll handle everything,” Shen’s father said from outside the bedroom.
“Xingxing, the snacks you left last time are still here. Have some to tide you over until your brother gets back and we can have lunch,” Shen’s mother said.
Shen Yunxing nodded. He had eaten a bit on the way over and wasn’t very hungry yet.
Seeing his mother’s lips cracked and dry, he said, “Mom, let me get you a glass of water.”
“Ah, who says raising sons isn’t as good as raising daughters? Our two children are both so considerate. Every neighbor in the community envies us,” Shen’s mother said with a smile.
In the living room, Shen Yunxing sent a message to Mr. Fu, informing him that he would be staying home for lunch and wouldn’t be able to go out with him.
The man quickly replied:
[Mr. Fu]: “Don’t worry about me. Just take care of Auntie. Call me if you need anything. [Pat on the head]”
Seeing the pat on the head emoji, Shen Yunxing felt warm inside, as if the man had really patted his head.
When Shen Yunshu arrived home, lunch was just being served. He walked in and frowned slightly at his younger brother who was waiting for him.
“Brother, you arrived just in time. Go wash your hands and have lunch,” Shen Yunxing said, taking his brother’s backpack.
“You came back alone?” Shen Yunshu asked.
“Yeah,” Shen Yunxing replied.
Seeing his younger brother’s evasive gaze, Shen Yunshu’s expression darkened. He didn’t show it, but after his younger brother turned around, he took out his phone and sent a text to the scoundrel Mr. Fu.
[sys]: “Two o’clock, café opposite Liu Chun Garden.”
After sending the message, he didn’t think about it further, put his phone away, and went to wash his hands for lunch.
“Mom, how did you hurt your leg? If it’s just a sprain, you could deceive my younger brother,” Shen Yunshu said at the dinner table.
Shen Yunxing, who was munching on ribs, shot an unhappy glance at his older brother.
“Brother, why are you personally attacking her? Besides, I don’t believe it either.”
“It’s not a sprain. She was robbed on her way home from work,” Shen’s father slammed his chopsticks down, his face darkened. “Don’t let me catch the robber, or I’ll beat him until he loses his teeth!”
“Robbed?” The brothers exchanged worried looks and then looked at their mother with concern.
“Our neighborhood is very safe, and Mom, you’ve been taking that road for over ten years without any problems,” Shen Yunshu said with a frown.
“Maybe it was just bad luck. Yesterday, the usual road I take was under construction, so I took a different route. I just happened to run into a robbery. Luckily, a young man passing by helped chase the robber away. Otherwise, I really can’t imagine the consequences,” Shen’s mother said, looking somewhat frightened.
Shen Yunshu’s frown deepened: “Nankang Road isn’t under construction. I came that way.”
“Brother, are you saying someone deliberately harmed Mom?” Shen Yunxing stared at his older brother in shock.
Shen’s father and mother were also taken aback.
“Impossible. We haven’t offended anyone,” Shen’s mother thought for a moment and then recalled someone.
Recently, she had been busy with a promotion to deputy director, competing with three others, including a forty-something male teacher named Chen Sheng, who had always had a grudge against her.
She had heard that Chen Sheng spent a lot of money bribing the vice principal for the selection process. However, the vice principal had recently been arrested for corruption and misconduct, causing Chen Sheng’s money to go to waste.
“Could it be that Chen Sheng is seeking revenge? I remember you had issues with a teacher named Chen before,” Shen Yunxing said.
Shen’s mother nodded. She had reported Chen Sheng for inappropriate behavior towards students, but the case was ultimately dropped when she discovered that the vice principal had been bought off by Chen Sheng.
Could it really be that he is seeking revenge? But these are illegal actions that could land him in prison.
At that moment, Shen’s mother’s phone rang. It was a call from the police station. She was startled and almost dropped her phone into the soup bowl.
“Mom, let me answer it,” Shen Yunshu said.
**”Hello, is this Ms. Shen Rongyin?”** the person on the other end of the phone asked after the call connected.
**”Hello, I’m Ms. Shen’s son. May I ask what this is about?”**
**”We received a report yesterday afternoon about a premeditated ambush on Nankang Road. The perpetrator turned himself in two hours ago. As the victim, Ms. Shen Rongyin needs to come to the police station to identify the suspect and give a statement.”**
**”Turned himself in? How is that possible?”**
**”May I ask who filed the report yesterday?”** Shen Yunshu asked.
**”It was a young man with the surname Fu.”**
In fact, Fu Tingzhou had orchestrated this situation, but the involvement of the young man with the surname Fu was just a coincidence. This, however, led Shen Yunshu to accidentally discover the truth.
**”Thank you, we’ll head over right away.”**
After hanging up, Shen Yunshu looked at his younger brother with a complex expression.
**”Brother, why are you looking at me like that?”** Shen Yunxing swallowed nervously. His brother’s gaze was making him feel uneasy.
**”It’s nothing.”**
Shen Yunshu explained the situation to their parents, and after finishing lunch, the family drove to the police station.
**Lin’an City Public Security Bureau.**
Chen Sheng, handcuffed, looked utterly defeated, his not-so-young face full of despair.
**”Ms. Shen, I was wrong. I was momentarily consumed by madness and nearly harmed you. I’m willing to compensate you with whatever amount you ask. My family relies on me; I can’t afford to go to jail!”**
Shen’s mother was soft-hearted. After this incident, it was impossible for Chen Sheng to continue teaching at the school, and besides, she had only suffered some scrapes and no serious injuries, so she decided to settle the matter privately.
After resolving the issue, Shen Yunshu first took his family home, then drove to Scarlet Café. Before leaving, he noticed his younger brother, Shen Yunxing, was grinning from ear to ear, engrossed in a conversation on his phone.
His expression suddenly darkened, suppressing a wave of jealousy, and he left with a stony face.
…
**1:55 PM, Scarlet Café.**
Fu Tingzhou had just finished sending a message to the boy, reminding him not to sneak any ice cream while he was away, when he looked up to see Shen Yunshu approaching with a stormy expression.
After a night of contemplation, Shen Yunshu had calmed down considerably, but when he thought about how this man, older than himself, had lured his just-of-age brother into a relationship, he couldn’t help but want to punch him. However, he restrained himself.
**”Fu Tingzhou,”** he said, barely containing his anger, **”I really want to beat you up right now.”**
Shen Yunxing was someone he had watched grow up—on the surface, gentle and obedient, but in reality, extremely stubborn. Once he set his mind on something, no matter what others said, he wouldn’t change his mind unless he gave up on it himself.
So, after learning about this, he didn’t confront his younger brother, Yunxing, but came to find Fu Tingzhou instead. If Fu Tingzhou backed off, Yunxing might be hurt, but he would eventually have to accept it.
**”I don’t care how long you’ve been together with Yunxing or when it started. As of today, you two have no more connection. Yunxing is still young, just barely an adult, while you’re a mature adult and much older than him. You’re not suitable for each other.”**
Shen Yunshu looked at the man coldly as he spoke, **”This relationship never should have started. It’s time to end it.”**
Fu Tingzhou responded, **”Sorry, I can’t agree to that.”**
**”Can’t agree? What right do you have to refuse?”** Shen Yunshu retorted. **”Yes, you helped with Tingting’s surgery, and you even likely intervened when my mom was attacked. But from the start, you had ulterior motives. All you did was to win over Yunxing!”** Shen Yunshu clenched his fists, gritting his teeth.
From the moment he entered until now, this man’s expression had hardly changed, showing no sign of guilt.
The man’s indifferent attitude was like a fuse, barely kept from igniting Shen Yunshu’s temper.
**”Mr. Shen…”**
**”Brother!”**
Shen Yunshu turned to see his younger brother hurrying over and sneered, **”Hmph, Mr. Fu really has his ways. What should have been between the two of us, you’ve turned into a shield, calling my brother here.”**
Shen Yunxing had just caught the last part of his brother’s words as he arrived. Standing beside Mr. Fu, his face had gone pale.
**”Brother, this is my fault too. I shouldn’t have kept this from you and Mom and Dad, but we had our reasons. Mr. Fu and I had no choice.”** The boy’s forehead was covered in a fine layer of sweat, and not only was his face pale, but his hands were trembling slightly.
Fu Tingzhou noticed immediately, his brows furrowing deeply.
He took the boy’s wrist, sat him down in a chair, draped his coat over him, and handed him a cup of hot water.
**”Are you feeling unwell?”** he asked gently, touching the boy’s forehead.
Shen Yunxing shook his head, clutching the man’s arm, his eyes reddening.
**”Mr. Fu, we agreed to face this together. Why didn’t you bring me along?”**
If his sister-in-law hadn’t tipped him off, given his brother’s temper, if he found out the truth, he would definitely resort to violence, and Mr. Fu would never fight back!
Seeing the boy’s tears made Fu Tingzhou’s heart ache as if being pierced by a knife.
This was the second time he’d seen the boy cry.
The first time, he hadn’t protected the boy and his baby well, nearly leading to a tragic accident.
This time, he had broken his promise. They had agreed to face this together, but he hadn’t kept his word.
**”I’m sorry, it won’t happen again.”** He said softly, gently wiping away the boy’s tears with his thumb.
The interaction between the two was so intimate that Shen Yunshu couldn’t find a way to intervene. He clenched his fists and stared at them, suddenly realizing that something seemed off about his brother’s condition.
