Chapter 96: Fu Xingzhou vs. Qin Yanjun
When Fu Xingzhou was four and a half, Qin Yanjun’s family moved to Chunjiang Huayueyuan.
The two were a year and a half apart. Fu Xingzhou was in senior kindergarten, while Qin Yanjun was in middle kindergarten. When Fu Xingzhou started primary school, Qin Yanjun was still in kindergarten.
Fu Xingzhou attended Lin’an City’s top primary school, which was a half-hour drive away.
Since he started primary school, they had less time to see each other, only meeting in the evenings after school and on weekends.
At that time, Fu Xingzhou was in sixth grade, and Qin Yanjun was in fifth grade. Although they attended the same school, their classes were far apart. That year, the school underwent reorganization, moving the fifth-grade classes to another building. They would only be relocated near Fu Xingzhou’s classroom a year later.
“Ring—”
When the school bell rang, the two friends met in the cafeteria as usual, laughing and talking as they went to eat.
“Fu Xingzhou, wait a minute!” A girl’s voice called from behind.
Qin Yanjun glanced at Fu Xingzhou and turned around with him to look.
It was a girl with a high ponytail, particularly cute-looking.
“Shen Yuexin?” Fu Xingzhou looked at his deskmate and asked, “What do you need?”
“Aren’t you poor—no, I mean, isn’t your family’s financial situation not great, and you rely on helping classmates with homework to earn pocket money? I came to tell you that I have a second-grade cousin. Can you help him with his homework?” Shen Yuexin’s cheeks were slightly flushed, whether from running or some other reason.
Fu Xingzhou didn’t mind being called poor because, compared to his classmates, his family was indeed not well off. His dad was unemployed at home, and his papa worked every day to support him and his younger brother. His parents had worked hard for their family.
To ease his parents’ burden, he had been earning his own pocket money since second grade and had saved up several thousand yuan by now!
He earned 20 yuan per subject for helping classmates with homework. How much could he earn helping someone a few grades younger?
“How much per subject?” he asked.
“Fifty!” Shen Yuexin replied quickly.
“Really?” Fu Xingzhou’s eyes lit up, and his delicate little face instantly became more radiant.
Shen Yuexin nodded. “Really! Also, my cousin’s classmates need help too.”
“No problem. When will the homework be ready?”
At fifty yuan per subject, two subjects would be a hundred. One person would pay a hundred; two would pay two hundred. If there were ten people, he could make a thousand!
He hadn’t expected lower-grade students to pay so well. If he’d known earlier, he’d have expanded his business to the lower grades and probably become a millionaire by now!
Excitedly, Fu Xingzhou rubbed his fingers together.
“I’ll bring it to you after school,” Shen Yuexin said. She then noticed the boy beside him. He was particularly cool and very handsome, but his cold expression was intimidating.
“Um, Yaoyao and the others are waiting for me. I’ll go now!” She quickly turned and left.
“Zhuzhu, who’s that?” Qin Yanjun frowned as he watched her cheerful retreating figure.
“Why are you frowning again?” Fu Xingzhou pressed his forehead with his hand and said, “She’s my deskmate, Shen Yuexin.”
“Stop helping others with their homework,” Qin Yanjun said seriously, his cool little face determined. “If you want to earn pocket money writing homework, you can help me. I’ll pay you a thousand per subject.”
Fu Xingzhou stared at him with a complicated expression.
“I don’t charge you.” Taking money from his wife? That would be humiliating!
Men who rely on their spouses are the most useless. A real man earns money for his wife!
He took out the hundred yuan he earned from yesterday’s homework and stuffed it into his wife’s hands.
“Here, today’s pocket money.” He looked at his spendthrift wife and warned, “Be sure to spend it wisely.”
Earning money by writing homework was hard work. He often stayed up until ten o’clock writing! QAQ.
“Okay.” Qin Yanjun’s cold face broke into a smile.
Seeing his wife smile, Fu Xingzhou felt that even staying up all night to write homework was worth it!
“Let’s go eat. Today’s my treat,” Qin Yanjun said, pulling Fu Xingzhou by the arm.
“You’re treating?” A bad feeling washed over Fu Xingzhou.
Sure enough, the hundred yuan he earned last night was gone in less than a minute, thanks to his spendthrift wife!
“Zhuzhu, why aren’t you eating?” Qin Yanjun asked.
“I am.” Fu Xingzhou popped a grape into his mouth.
It wasn’t anything special, but these grapes cost two yuan apiece. He might as well be robbed!
As he kept eating, one grape after another, he realized he’d finished the entire plate, leaving only two!
“Junjun, let me buy you another plate,” he said, standing up.
“No need. You forgot I don’t like grapes?”
Fu Xingzhou froze.
Oh right, Junjun didn’t like grapes.
“Junjun, did you buy this plate of grapes just for me?” The grape-loving Fu Xingzhou looked at his wife with bright eyes.
Qin Yanjun smiled and nodded. “Yes.”
Overjoyed, Fu Xingzhou ate half a bowl more of rice and even finished the carrots he disliked the most.
After lunch, they had two hours of nap time.
Qin Yanjun didn’t return to his dorm but went to Fu Xingzhou’s instead.
“Your little brother’s here to nap with us again,” their roommates teased.
“Yes,” Fu Xingzhou replied. But it wasn’t his brother—it was his wife.
“Didn’t you say your pillow wasn’t comfortable last time? I secretly brought the massage pillow Dad bought for Papa.” He patted the pillow, showing off.
“Mm, it feels good.” Qin Yanjun pressed it, nodding in approval. This way, Zhuzhu wouldn’t snore uncomfortably during naps.
Feeling unappreciated, Fu Xingzhou asked, “Do you like it?”
“Yes.” Qin Yanjun smiled. “Thank you, Zhuzhu.”
Beaming, Fu Xingzhou puffed out his chest. “You’re welcome. As long as you like it.”
It’s a husband’s duty to take care of his wife!
After making the bed, he pulled his wife down to lie on it.
“Junjun, you sleep inside; I’ll sleep outside.”
“I’ll sleep outside. It’s easier to get water that way.”
Remembering his wife’s habit of drinking water at night, Fu Xingzhou agreed reluctantly.
“Alright, I’ll sleep inside.”
After taking off his shoes, he obediently climbed to the inner side of the bed.
Qin Yanjun smiled as he lay beside him.
Soon, Fu Xingzhou’s breathing evened out as he fell asleep.
Lying on the outer side, Qin Yanjun looked at his sleeping companion and whispered, “Zhuzhu, are you asleep?”
“Zzz—”
The reply was a series of soft snores.
Qin Yanjun smiled, holding Zhuzhu’s hand gently.
“Good afternoon, Zhuzhu.”
When Fu Xingzhou woke to the preparatory bell, his wife had already returned to class. On the table was a note in Junjun’s neat handwriting.
Zhuzhu, I went back to class. Don’t forget to drink some water when you wake up, or you’ll feel thirsty.—Junjun ^-^
Looking at the little smiley face at the end, Fu Xingzhou grinned foolishly.
“Stop daydreaming, Fu Xingzhou! You’re going to be late! The first class is with the homeroom teacher, and she’ll make you write lines if you’re late!”
“Got it!” He folded the note and put it into a small box at his bedside. Then he quickly got ready and rushed to class with his roommates.
They made it to their seats just as the bell rang.
“That was close,” his deskmate Shen Yuexin whispered. “You almost got punished with writing fifty lines!”
Fifty lines?!
Fu Xingzhou was shocked. Fifty lines?!
Copying once takes five minutes. Copying fifty times would take two hundred and fifty minutes—over four hours to complete.
When he gets home, he has to do his own homework and help others with theirs. If he’s late and gets punished with writing, he’d have to stay up until the middle of the night to finish!
No way. From now on, he needs to wake up earlier during lunch breaks and stop cutting it so close to class time.
He calculated this in his head.
Seeing that he wasn’t responding, Shen Yuexin pursed her lips and turned her head away.
The last class of the afternoon was PE. Fu Xingzhou didn’t like PE; he preferred art class. However, he had already used up numerous excuses to skip before, and this time, he couldn’t think of a new one. He had no choice but to join the group heading to the field.
“Alright, everyone, line up,” the PE teacher blew his whistle and said loudly. “The end-of-term fitness test is coming up. Let me see the results of your training these past few months!”
With another whistle blow, he urged everyone to quickly get in formation.
Fu Xingzhou was among the tallest in the class and was always placed at the back during runs. Sporting a delicate expression, he found his spot and stood there.
Once everyone was in position, the teacher gave the signal. The students took off like arrows from a bowstring, but Fu Xingzhou lagged behind, swinging his arms as he huffed and puffed. Before long, he was left far behind the group.
“Huff—huff—”
So tiring! Why does the school even have PE class? If every period were art class, he’d attend every single one without missing a day!
Struggling to breathe, he continued running at the back. Soon, he felt tightness in his chest, as if he could hardly catch his breath.
“Teacher, I’m really uncomfortable. Can I rest for a bit?” He slowed down and stopped near the PE teacher, speaking with difficulty.
“Fu Xingzhou, it’s you again! Last time it was a stomachache, and the time before that you said you were dizzy. What is it this time?” The PE teacher, Lei Zhen, put his hands on his hips and scolded.
This was not the first or second time this kid had come up with an excuse to avoid running. Did Fu Xingzhou think he had infinite patience?
“Mr. Lei, I’m really feeling unwell this time. My chest hurts so much,” Fu Xingzhou clutched his chest, panting heavily.
Seeing his pale face and the sweat beading on his forehead, Lei Zhen’s heart skipped a beat.
Quickly coming to his senses, he immediately carried his student on his back and hurried to the school clinic.
Some students saw Fu Xingzhou collapse and shouted, “Something happened to Fu Xingzhou! Let’s go check on him!”
Soon, a group of worried classmates followed after them.
At that moment, Qin Yanjun, who was attending class, accidentally glanced out the window and saw Zhouzhou being carried to the school clinic. He immediately stood up.
The scraping sound of his chair against the floor attracted the attention of the entire class, including the teacher.
“Sorry, Teacher, I have a stomachache and need to go to the restroom!” he said anxiously.
The teacher waved him off, “Go ahead.”
Qin Yanjun was the class monitor, a model student who had never done anything inappropriate. Hearing that he needed the restroom, the teacher let him leave without hesitation.
The “stomachache” Qin Yanjun left the classroom and ran straight to the school clinic. When he arrived, he saw the entrance and windows surrounded by students.
“Is Fu Xingzhou alright? He suddenly collapsed, and it scared me.”
“I don’t know. We can’t hear what the doctor is saying. But Lei Zhen’s expression doesn’t look too good.”
“I hope nothing serious happened to Fu Xingzhou!”
The students murmured worriedly.
“Qin Yanjun, you’re here! Hurry and go check! Your brother passed out!” Sun Miao, one of Fu Xingzhou’s dormmates, urged.
“Got it.” Qin Yanjun furrowed his brow.
“Which class are you from? Don’t you know it’s class time? You’re not allowed to leave your classroom randomly,” Lei Zhen reprimanded sharply upon seeing him enter.
“Doctor, how is my brother?” Qin Yanjun ignored him and approached the bed, asking the school doctor.
Hearing him address Fu Xingzhou as “brother,” Lei Zhen decided not to stop him.
“There’s nothing major, just heart palpitations caused by lack of exercise. He needs to work on improving his physical fitness gradually,” the school doctor explained while putting away the equipment. “For now, no strenuous activities for the next two days. He should build up his stamina slowly.”
“For safety reasons, Mr. Lei, I recommend calling the parents to take him for a full-body checkup at a hospital,” the doctor added.
Lei Zhen nodded, “Got it. Thank you, Dr. Wang.”
“No problem.” Dr. Wang turned to Qin Yanjun and said, “Are you his younger brother? Stay here with him until school ends. I need to step out for a bit. Lock up before you leave.”
Qin Yanjun nodded and sat by Zhouzhou’s bedside, his eyes reddening.
“Mr. Lei, I’ll call his parents in a bit. I’ll stay here and look after Zhouzhou; you can go back to class,” Qin Yanjun said firmly.
Lei Zhen looked at the concerned students outside, then at the two boys inside holding hands. After some hesitation, he relented.
“Alright. Which class and grade are you in? I’ll have someone get you a leave slip.”
“Grade 3, Class 4, Qin Yanjun. Thank you, Mr. Lei.”
Qin Yanjun?
Lei Zhen froze. This boy was the same Qin Yanjun who had represented the school in the Hua Cup competition and won the championship?
Realizing who he was, Lei Zhen relaxed. This kid was known for his high intelligence and responsibility. With Fu Xingzhou in his care, Lei Zhen felt reassured.
After Lei Zhen led the students away, Qin Yanjun wiped his eyes and stared at Zhouzhou lying on the bed for a long time before taking out his phone to call Zhouzhou’s dads.
He dialed Dad Zhou first but couldn’t get through. He then called Papa Zhou.
“Yanjun?” Fu Tingzhou had just finished a meeting and glanced at the time upon receiving the call. “Isn’t it still class time?”
“Papa, I need to tell you something, but don’t worry,” Qin Yanjun said. “Zhouzhou passed out and was taken to the school clinic. The doctor says he’s okay, but for his health, they recommend a full-body checkup at the hospital.”
Hearing that his son had fainted, Fu Tingzhou grabbed his car keys and left immediately. “Alright, Yanjun, don’t panic. I’ll be there shortly. Stay with Zhouzhou for now.”
“Okay, Papa, drive safely. Zhouzhou and I are at school waiting for you.”
“Yanjun?” Fu Xingzhou had woken up and asked weakly, “Were you on the phone with my Papa?”
Qin Yanjun nodded. “Do you want some water?”
“Yes.” Zhouzhou’s head still felt dizzy. After sipping the warm water Yanjun handed him, he suddenly remembered fainting while running.
Scanning the room, he asked, “Is this the school clinic?”
“Yes.”
“How did you know I was here?” He tilted his head in curiosity.
Qin Yanjun confessed, “I saw you being carried to the clinic and ran down to check on you.”
Zhouzhou squeezed their joined hands and grinned. “I knew it. My wife cares about me the most!”
Yanjun, however, didn’t smile. He sternly said, “Starting tomorrow, I’ll come wake you up at 6:30 a.m.”
Zhouzhou’s eyes widened in shock. “Six-thirty?! Qin Yanjun, are you trying to kill me?”
Yanjun glared. “Don’t use that word!”
Startled by Yanjun’s anger, Zhouzhou shrank back and reluctantly nodded.
“Fine, I’ll get up at six-thirty. But why so early? We don’t have class until eight.”
“For a morning run.”
Zhouzhou protested, “Are you trying to murder me? Running is the reason I fainted today! Qin Yanjun, you have no heart!”
Yanjun shot him a cold glance. “If you’re this weak now, I’ll have no choice but to remarry someone strong and healthy when you’re gone.”
“No way!” Fu Xingzhou gripped his hand tightly, his gaze fierce. “If you dare find someone else, I’ll haunt you as a ghost!”
Qin Yanjun: “The living and the dead are worlds apart. Accept it and move on.”
Fu Xingzhou deflated, looking at him pitifully with his big watery eyes, full of grievance. “Fine, I’ll run, but you absolutely can’t secretly cheat on me!”
Qin Yanjun: “I won’t. I’ve only ever recognized one husband.”
Fu Xingzhou was coaxed into happiness by this sentence. He crawled out from under the blanket and planted a kiss on his wife’s cheek.
“Hehe.”
Qin Yanjun: “Fu Xingzhou, do you still remember what you promised me?”
“Only hugs in public, no kissing.” The latter tilted his head, playing the pity card. “But Zhouzhou is sick today. Can’t I get a special privilege?”
Qin Yanjun: “…Fine.”
“Hehe, smooch—”
Fu Tingzhou arrived at the school clinic five minutes before dismissal to pick up the two kids. After leaving school, he drove straight to the central hospital where Liu Huaijin was working.
“How is it?” He quickly asked after his friend completed a full examination of his son.
Liu Huaijin: “Relax, Zhouzhou’s fine. He just needs to exercise more from now on.” Saying this, he pinched Zhouzhou’s nose and teased with a smile, “No more being picky with food, eat more vegetables and exercise more. Otherwise, you won’t even have the strength to carry your wife in the future, got it?”
Classmate Fu Xingzhou nodded vigorously. “Liu Liu Godfather, Zhouzhou understands!”
After speaking, he shyly glanced at Junjun, who had been by his side the whole time.
