Chapter 98: Fu Xingzhou vs. Qin Yanjun
When Fu Xingzhou advanced to the first year of junior high, Qin Yanjun skipped a grade and also entered the same year. However, they weren’t placed in the same class. Instead, Fu Xingzhou’s former deskmate, Shen Yuexin, ended up in his class.
Junior high required boarding at school. On the evening before the first day, their dads helped pack his things for boarding. They even included a small plush doll of Junjun in the luggage compartment alongside their family-of-four caricature keychain.
“Brother, does this mean I won’t see you for a whole week?” Fourth-grader Shen Xinting tugged on his brother’s sleeve, wiping away tears with one hand.
“Shen Xinting, no crying!” Fu Xingzhou glared at him. “You’re a boy, don’t cry. Besides, I’m just going to school, and I’ll be back on the weekend. If you miss me, we can video chat at night since the school allows phones.”
Shen Xinting stopped rubbing his eyes, looking at his brother pitifully. “Oh… Then remember to send me a WeChat message every day, okay?”
Fu Xingzhou patted his little brother’s head. “Got it.”
“Dad, wake me up early tomorrow. I want to go with you to take my brother to school.” Shen Xinting made his request.
“Alright.” Shen Yunxing smiled and agreed.
However, the next morning, no matter what they did, they couldn’t wake the youngest son. After some discussion, the two dads simply carried Shen Xinting, still wrapped in his blanket, into the car.
“Dad, Daddy, wait for Junjun and Aunt Su! They’re on their way!” Fu Xingzhou stood in front of the car and waved.
Within five minutes, the Qin family of three appeared.
“Junjun!” Fu Xingzhou happily waved at his “wife” Junjun.
As Qin Yanjun got closer, Fu Xingzhou blushed and leaned in to whisper, “Junjun, you look so handsome today~”
Qin Yanjun tugged at his backpack straps, his cool face tinged with a faint blush.
“Zhouzhou’s outfit looks great too.”
“Hehe.”
“Yunxing, Lao Qin has to leave for a business trip later, and I have a 9 a.m. flight for a shoot. Please take care of Junjun,” Su Yin said as she handed over her son’s luggage.
“Su-jie, when did you become so formal?” Shen Yunxing chuckled. “Back when I was filming, you and Brother Qin helped look after Zhouzhou and Chuan Chuan all the time.”
Su Yin laughed. “Alright, I’ll bring you some specialties from City X when I’m back. I’ve heard their flower pastries are delicious.”
“No problem.”
The couple, short on time, quickly left after a few words.
“Shen Xinting?” Qin Yanjun thought he hadn’t come. But when he opened the car door, he saw Shen Xinting fast asleep, bundled in his blanket, and was momentarily stunned.
“We couldn’t wake him up this morning. Dad and Daddy were worried he’d throw a tantrum, so here we are,” Fu Xingzhou explained, climbing into the car first. He pushed his brother further inside, then turned and said to Qin Yanjun, “Junjun, come on in.”
“…Okay,” Qin Yanjun replied.
On the first day of school, the entrance was packed with people.
However, thanks to a donation Fu Tingzhou had made to the school’s scholarship fund, they didn’t need to squeeze in with the other parents. The principal himself came to meet them, leading the family through the staff entrance to the dormitory building.
“Brother, make sure to send Chuan Chuan WeChat messages!” Shen Xinting, still in his Peppa Pig pajamas, reminded his brother worriedly before they left.
“Don’t worry, I won’t forget.” Fu Xingzhou hugged his little brother, then his dads. After seeing them off, he headed with Qin Yanjun to their respective classrooms.
One was in Class 4 on the second floor, and the other in Class 10 on the fourth floor.
“Junjun, this is my stop,” Fu Xingzhou said in front of Class 4. “I’ll message you at lunchtime. Let’s meet by the second-floor stairs.”
“Okay,” Qin Yanjun replied.
Only after watching Zhouzhou enter his classroom did he turn and head to his own.
At the door of Class 10 on the fourth floor, Qin Yanjun found his seat and had just settled in when he felt someone gently poke his back with a pen.
“Qin Yanjun? Are you Zhouzhou’s friend, Qin Yanjun?”
Qin Yanjun turned to see a girl. His cool expression didn’t change.
Seeing he didn’t seem to recognize her, Shen Yuexin smiled and introduced herself. “I’m Shen Yuexin. Don’t you remember me? Back in elementary school, I got Zhouzhou lots of copying homework jobs.”
Hearing her call him Zhouzhou, Qin Yanjun frowned slightly, displeased.
“I remember. Do you need something?”
“Uh, no, I was just excited to run into someone I know,” Shen Yuexin replied.
Shen Yuexin had seen Qin Yanjun several times before, but he always had a cold expression, looking particularly impatient. She had never dared to approach him until her momentary excitement got the better of her.
“Sorry, I shouldn’t have poked your back with a pen,” she apologized.
“Mm.” Qin Yanjun nodded, then turned back around without sparing her another glance.
“Hey, is he your friend? He’s so handsome!” Shen Yuexin’s deskmate whispered, nudging her arm. “I heard you call him Qin Yanjun. Not only is he good-looking, but his name is amazing too. I love it!”
Shen Yuexin shrugged. “Don’t get your hopes up. Back in elementary school, the line of girls handing him love letters could circle the track several times, but he didn’t accept a single one.”
“How do you know? Did you join the line too?” her deskmate teased.
Shen Yuexin rolled her eyes. “I wouldn’t like someone like him. Always cold and expressionless—only you hopeless romantics fall for that.”
Her deskmate’s eyes widened. “You don’t like him? Then what kind of guy do you like?”
“I like someone who’s good-looking, gentle, can draw, and is good at studying,” Shen Yuexin said, resting her chin in her hands.
Her deskmate gave her a sidelong glance. “That’s so specific. Sounds like someone you already know.”
Shen Yuexin’s face turned red.
“I was just saying casually. Alright, the teacher’s here, sit properly.”
Her deskmate scoffed. She didn’t believe it was just a casual remark.
The first day of school didn’t involve many classes. The homeroom teacher had everyone introduce themselves one by one, then divided the class into groups to move books back to the classroom and distribute them. The morning passed quickly.
As soon as the homeroom teacher announced the break, Qin Yanjun immediately packed his books into his desk and left the classroom.
In Class Four of the first-year students, class was still in session. A middle-aged man with a beer belly and a receding hairline was passionately delivering a speech from the podium, his spittle spraying onto the faces of the front-row students.
“Teacher, when is class ending? We’re starving!” one student shouted, followed by an outcry from others.
Yang Chenggong checked the time and realized class had already run ten minutes over. He hurriedly turned to wrap up with a couple of sentences before ending his speech.
Fu Xingzhou, tall and sitting in the second-to-last row, was so hungry his stomach was almost sticking to his back. He picked up his water bottle, gulped down a few mouthfuls of water, and finally mustered the energy to stand.
“Junjun.” As he stepped out the back door, he spotted Junjun standing in the hallway, his eyes lighting up instantly.
He jogged over to Qin Yanjun, frowning as he complained, “Junjun, let me tell you, our homeroom teacher is super fond of dragging out class. From now on, I’ll have to carry snacks with me, or else I’ll faint from hunger before he finishes talking.”
Qin Yanjun frowned too. “Did you skip breakfast again this morning?”
Fu Xingzhou shrank his neck, his gaze a bit guilty as he looked at his Junjun.
“I-I did! I ate an egg, drank porridge, and even had several steamed buns!”
In reality, he had only had a bowl of porridge and an egg. The buns had been secretly given to his younger brother because they contained shredded carrots…
Qin Yanjun noticed his evasive eyes and knew he was lying. His frown deepened.
“Let’s go eat.” He decided to fill his stomach first and scold him later.
“Okay.” Seeing that his Junjun wasn’t angry anymore, Fu Xingzhou happily followed him.
In the cafeteria, Qin Yanjun used his meal card to get food for Fu Xingzhou and told him to find a seat while he got another portion.
“Okay, come quickly.”
Qin Yanjun nodded. When he turned around with his own tray, he spotted Shen Yuexin and her deskmate sitting across from Zhouzhou.
The three of them were chatting about something and laughing hysterically.
He paused mid-step and walked toward the trio with a blank expression.
“Yeah, it’s such a coincidence! I didn’t expect you to be in the same class as Junjun,” Fu Xingzhou said enviously. If only he could be in the same class as Junjun too.
Shen Yuexin smiled slightly. “Qin Yanjun is handsome, but he’s a bit hard to get along with. I still prefer having you as my deskmate.”
Shen Yuexin’s deskmate winked at her, only to be elbowed before turning her head back.
Fu Xingzhou laughed. “Not at all. Actually, Junjun is really nice.”
Qin Yanjun’s gaze landed on Zhouzhou’s smiling face, and his lips tightened.
“What are you talking about? Laughing so happily,” he asked as he sat down.
Fu Xingzhou turned to him and asked, “Why didn’t you tell me that Shen Yuexin is in Class Ten with you?”
Qin Yanjun glanced briefly at the person across from him and replied indifferently, “Why does it matter? It’s unnecessary.”
Hearing this, Shen Yuexin felt awkward. She nudged her deskmate, Du Yuno, with her elbow. “Uh, Zhouzhou, we’re done eating. Let’s go.”
She grabbed a bewildered Du Yuno and bolted.
“What’s wrong with you? We just sat down!” Du Yuno asked, utterly confused, her tray still in her hands.
Shen Yuexin sighed. Once they found another seat, she explained, “Didn’t you see? Qin Yanjun clearly dislikes me.”
“Huh? Why?” Du Yuno’s ears perked up, ready for some gossip.
“I don’t know. Even back in elementary school, he was always hostile toward me. Every time he saw me near Fu Xingzhou, he’d pull a long face as if I owed him millions.”
Recalling the last time she met Fu Xingzhou, Shen Yuexin frowned. “I guess he’s worried I’ll steal his only good friend. After all, at school, Fu Xingzhou is the only friend he has.”
Du Yuno sipped her soup and suddenly leaned closer, lowering her voice. “Could it be… they’re not just friends?”
Shen Yuexin froze. “What do you mean?”
“Ahem. Do you think it’s possible they’re actually a couple?” Du Yuno put down her chopsticks, brought her thumbs together, and twisted them as if to hint at something. “If you’re trying to steal his boyfriend, that would explain why Qin Yanjun dislikes you so much.”
Shen Yuexin waved her hand dismissively. “No way. They’re just childhood friends. It’s normal for them to be closer than usual. Besides, Fu Xingzhou is such a naïve, sweet guy. He probably doesn’t even understand what liking someone means.”
“He might not, but what about Qin Yanjun?” Du Yuno said with a knowing smile. “By the way, so this is your type? Simple and adorable, like a little bunny?”
“…”
Shen Yuexin had nothing to say. She poked at her rice, her mind suddenly flooded with memories of the past. When she snapped back to reality, she was so shocked her chopsticks fell from her hand.
“Damn, damn, damn! I’m such an idiot! Qin Yanjun being so nice to Fu Xingzhou is definitely not simple!”
