Chapter 99: Fu Xingzhou vs. Qin Yanjun
Qin Yanjun took Fu Xingzhou on morning runs every day, from the first year of middle school to the third, and even after they entered high school, the routine continued.
“Ring—”
The class bell rang, and Shen Yuexin noticed Fu Xingzhou walking in with damp hair. She raised an eyebrow and said, “Qin Yanjun dragged you out for a morning run again?”
Lin’an High School had both a middle school and a high school division. During the three years of middle school, classes were shuffled every year, and she had never ended up in the same class as Fu Xingzhou. It wasn’t until high school that they finally became classmates for two and a half consecutive years.
Fu Xingzhou nodded. “Yeah.”
The sixteen-year-old boy was slim and delicate. His jet-black, soft hair framed long, curled lashes. Beneath them, his clear black eyes shone with innocence. His small, delicate nose and slightly pink lips contrasted against his fair, flawless skin, giving him an androgynous beauty.
Shen Yuexin stared, momentarily lost, and snapped back to reality by pinching her arm.
Shen Yuexin, get a grip. This boy is already spoken for. If you dare to make a move, Qin Yanjun will surely grind you to dust!
“Shen Yuexin, you look a little pale. Are you okay?” Fu Xingzhou asked, concern in his voice.
“I’m fine! Perfectly fine, thanks for asking!”
In that instant, Shen Yuexin felt a hostile gaze on her. She turned toward the window and spotted someone standing in the hallway. Her scalp tingled immediately.
Damn, does Qin Yanjun have some kind of illness? I’ve already said I’m not interested in Fu Xingzhou anymore. Sure, Fu Xingzhou is prettier than most girls, but can’t I just admire him for a second? If you’ve got a problem, hide him away so no one can see!
She glanced at Qin Yanjun’s departing figure and shivered at the thought that he might actually do such a thing.
Poor Zhouzhou. Being under the watchful eye of someone like that must be exhausting.
“Zhouzhou, what do you think of Qin Yanjun?”
How many times had she asked this now? Three? Four? She had lost count.
The weather in September and October was hot and stuffy. After his run, Fu Xingzhou felt like his body was on fire. He grabbed the hem of his T-shirt and fanned himself quickly, trying to cool off.
Just as he was about to respond, Shen Yuexin interrupted him.
“Stop! Put your hand down. Use this mini fan instead!” She pulled an electric fan out of her desk and handed it to him.
Fu Xingzhou paused his actions and flashed her a cute smile, complete with dimples.
“Thanks.”
Shen Yuexin glanced at his abdomen, where faint muscles were visible beneath the T-shirt, and felt her face heat up.
You should thank me. If Qin Yanjun had seen that, he’d probably go berserk.
“Junjun is a really nice person,” Fu Xingzhou said, smiling as he held the fan up to his face. “Even though he’s more than a year younger than me, he’s the one who takes care of me most of the time. Compared to him, I’m like a little brother who always needs looking after. And Junjun’s grown a lot taller over the past two years.”
He sighed. “He’s now half a head taller than me. I used to be taller than him.”
“Don’t worry. You’ll have another growth spurt at twenty-three. Some people even grow a few centimeters at twenty-six.” Shen Yuexin patted his shoulder reassuringly. “So don’t lose hope. Believe in yourself—you can do it!”
Fu Xingzhou nodded earnestly.
The first period was English. As the bell rang, a young English teacher in a red dress walked in, her high heels clicking against the floor.
“Hello, everyone. Today we’re going to…”
Fu Xingzhou spent the entire morning thinking about how to grow taller and barely paid attention in class. It wasn’t until the last period ended and his classmate Xi Ming patted him on the shoulder that he snapped out of his thoughts.
“What’s up with you? You’ve been spacing out all morning. What’s going on? Even the class genius has moments when he doesn’t feel like studying?” Xi Ming teased. “Got a problem you can’t figure out? Tell me, and I’ll help you out.”
“Do you know how to grow taller quickly?” Fu Xingzhou turned to him, looking serious.
“That’s easy. Eating alone won’t cut it—you’ve got to exercise more,” Xi Ming said as he stood up and gestured to his own height. “Stick with me, and I guarantee you’ll be as tall as me!”
Fu Xingzhou’s eyes lit up. “Really?”
“Of course! Let’s go grab lunch. If you want to be tall like me, you’ve got to cut out the junk food!” Xi Ming eyed the stash of snacks in Fu Xingzhou’s desk and raised an eyebrow. “Those won’t do. Next week, I’ll bring you some proper snacks from home and show you what real tall-guy food looks like.”
“Okay! Thanks!” Fu Xingzhou’s eyes curved into a joyful smile.
When Qin Yanjun arrived at the class five minutes late to take Fu Xingzhou to lunch, he found him chatting happily with Xi Ming.
Seeing the brightness in Fu Xingzhou’s eyes, Qin Yanjun stopped in his tracks. His already expressionless face grew even colder.
“Fu Xingzhou, let’s go eat.” He stood at the door and called out.
Hearing his voice, Fu Xingzhou immediately turned to look.
“Junjun, you’re done with class!” He pushed back his chair and ran to Qin Yanjun, his smile so sweet that Qin Yanjun couldn’t bear to keep up his cold demeanor.
“Mm.” Qin Yanjun’s lips curved slightly in response.
But then Fu Xingzhou turned and waved to Xi Ming.
“Xi Ming, come on! Let’s go eat!”
“Coming!”
Xi Ming walked over, grinning, and greeted Qin Yanjun enthusiastically.
“Hi, I’m Xi Ming, Fu Xingzhou’s good buddy.” With a thumbs-up, he added, “You’re Qin Yanjun, right? You look amazing—no wonder all the girls in the high school are lining up to write you love letters.”
Fu Xingzhou immediately chimed in, “Even the junior high girls wrote him letters!”
See? My Junjun is amazing.
His face was full of pride.
Xi Ming got the message and clapped. “Impressive. Unlike me—I’m in my third year and haven’t received a single love letter.”
“Really?” Fu Xingzhou studied Xi Ming’s face with doubt. “You’re pretty good-looking. How come no one’s written you one?”
Xi Ming shrugged. “Who knows? Maybe you could write me one so I know how it feels to get one.” He winked playfully.
Hearing this, Qin Yanjun glanced coldly at Xi Ming.
“I won’t,” Fu Xingzhou refused flatly. “I don’t like you, so why would I write you a love letter?”
Xi Ming clutched his chest dramatically. “So heartless! We’re friends—what’s one little letter?”
“No,” Fu Xingzhou said firmly, stopping in his tracks to face him seriously. “Love letters are meant for someone you like.”
“So, you like someone then?” Xi Ming nudged his shoulder and raised an eyebrow. “Who is it? Are you and Shen Yuexin a thing? I see you helping her out a lot, like wiping down the blackboard. Do you have a thing for her?”
“Of course not. Shen Yuexin and I are just friends.”
“Then who is it? Are you two together yet?”
“No, I haven’t confessed yet.” Fu Xingzhou’s gaze instinctively flickered to Qin Yanjun, only to find Qin Yanjun already looking at him. His ears instantly turned red.
“Why are you asking so many questions?” He rubbed his stomach awkwardly to change the topic. “I’m so hungry. I want fried chicken rice and crispy whitebait.”
Ximing immediately chimed in, “Alright, it’s on me!”
“Why should you pay?” Fu Xingzhou tilted his head, confused. “I still have money on my meal card.”
“Think of it as payment for helping me with the class blackboard design,” Ximing said with a grin.
“But I haven’t started drawing it yet,” Fu Xingzhou replied.
Ximing handed him the meal card. “Consider it a bribe in advance. Make sure to draw it beautifully tomorrow, so it beats the artistic rep from the class next door. Otherwise, I won’t feel at ease.”
Fu Xingzhou had no choice but to accept the meal card. “Junjun, what do you want to eat?” He turned and handed his own meal card to Qin Yanjun.
Seeing Qin Yanjun naturally take the card without even saying thanks, with a lifeless expression, Ximing couldn’t help but find him irritating. He frowned slightly, but when Fu Xingzhou turned back to look, he quickly plastered a smile on his face again.
“Xingzhou’s friend is my friend too. Order whatever you want. My treat.”
Before Fu Xingzhou could refuse, Junjun casually replied, “Alright.”
Fu Xingzhou looked at Junjun in confusion; this wasn’t like his usual behavior. However, Junjun kept his eyes ahead, giving him no chance to exchange glances.
At the cafeteria, Ximing said he’d find a table while they ordered. He waved generously, looking like a big spender.
But five minutes later, seeing the pile of crawfish on Qin Yanjun’s tray, he could no longer keep smiling.
Qin Yanjun looked at him and said indifferently, “Sorry, I accidentally maxed out your card.”
Ximing: “…”
Not even bothering to fake an apologetic expression. That’s some serious indifference!
“Sorry, Ximing,” Fu Xingzhou said, holding the card. “Junjun suddenly really wanted crawfish, so he bought a bit too much. I’ll recharge your card and return it this afternoon.”
“It’s fine. I said I’d treat you guys; I can’t go back on my word now.” Ximing glanced at the guy eating crawfish without a care in the world and suppressed his heartache. “Let’s eat quickly before the food gets cold.”
Fu Xingzhou hesitated for a moment but nodded when he saw Ximing’s insistence. “Alright, then I’ll treat you tomorrow.”
“Deal.” Ximing smiled again, feeling like those few hundred yuan might have been worth it after all.
At that moment, Qin Yanjun placed a peeled crawfish into Fu Xingzhou’s plate. “Zhuzhou, eat.”
Fu Xingzhou smiled brightly. “Thanks, Junjun.”
He loved crawfish too but wasn’t good at peeling them and found it too much trouble. Every time the cafeteria had crawfish, he avoided it. But whenever he was with Junjun, he always got these pleasant surprises.
While eating the crawfish, he reached under the table to tug at Junjun’s sleeve, shaking it gently. It was his way of expressing joy and affection, with a hint of playful coquettishness.
Feeling appeased by the boy’s gesture, Qin Yanjun’s expression softened. If one looked closely, they might catch a subtle smile under his long lashes.
After lunch, the three returned to their dorms for a nap.
Fu Xingzhou’s dorm was a mixed arrangement. Initially, Qin Yanjun wasn’t assigned to room 402, but his father, Qin Jingchen, and godfather, Fu Tingzhou, had the room changed with just one word.
Ximing was in 401, the first room past the staircase. Standing at his dorm entrance, he waved at Fu Xingzhou.
“See you this afternoon.”
“Okay,” Fu Xingzhou nodded before tugging on Qin Yanjun’s sleeve as they laughed and chatted their way into 402.
Ximing paused, unable to resist glancing back. He noticed how close their hands were—just half a step more, and their fingers would touch. He frowned slightly.
What’s up with these two? He could tell Qin Yanjun liked Fu Xingzhou, but what about Fu Xingzhou? The kid seemed a bit naive; he wasn’t sure.
“Ximing, close the door! The dorm supervisor will be checking rooms soon!”
“Okay, coming.” Ximing snapped out of it and quickly shut the door.
“Is she heartbroken or something? She’s checked the dorm three times today. Isn’t she tired?”
“Speaking of relationships, I saw the school hunk from the class next door holding hands and strolling with Han Shuxue on the track the other day!”
Ximing froze. “Qin Yanjun? Are you sure you didn’t mistake someone else?”
“Come on, my eyesight is 20/20. No way I’d mistake him!” his roommate Meng Qiang whispered as he shared the gossip. “I even pretended to jog past them for a closer look. Han Shuxue looked so happy, but Qin Yanjun didn’t have a hint of a smile. Total player-victim vibes!”
“Hey, do you guys think it’s weird that someone as handsome as Qin Yanjun still doesn’t have a girlfriend? Even with someone like Han Shuxue, he showed no expression. I’m starting to think he might like guys.” Liu Xin scratched his chin thoughtfully.
“What’s wrong with that?” Zheng Tongtong rolled his eyes. “It’s the 21st century. Same-sex marriage has been legal for years. Stop being so old-fashioned.”
“Hey, I’m not judging!” Liu Xin quickly clarified. “I was just thinking, if Qin Yanjun really likes guys, I wouldn’t mind being the bottom for him!”
Hugging his blanket, Liu Xin suddenly looked shy.
Meng Qiang stared at him wide-eyed. “Dude, you like guys?!”
“No, I don’t! But Qin Yanjun is too handsome. Imagine having such a gorgeous boyfriend to show off!”
Meng Qiang and Zheng Tongtong nodded in agreement, seemingly convinced.
Meanwhile, in 402, Fu Xingzhou was fast asleep, snuggled up against his Junjun.
Used as a human pillow, Qin Yanjun only had his hands free. He pulled the blanket over the boy and turned to gaze at his peaceful sleeping face, a faint smile playing on his lips.
“Foolish Zhuzhou,” he murmured softly, tweaking the boy’s slightly flushed nose.
“Mm—” Fu Xingzhou instinctively wiggled his head and then buried his face into Qin Yanjun’s neck.
Qin Yanjun chuckled, set an alarm for their wake-up time, and closed his eyes to sleep as well.
On the top bunk, Pei Yu, who witnessed the entire scene, was left speechless:
Well, that explains why they’re so clingy all the time. Turns out they’re literally sharing a bed!

Qin Yanjun’s POV:
I’m not a player. I’m not dating anyone. I’ve never held hands with a girl. I suggest Meng Qiang get his eyesight checked. If I don’t see you wearing glasses tomorrow, I won’t mind helping you out. (smiling.jpg)
