This time, when Feng Ye returned to the capital, it was officially on behalf of his father’s report.
Reporting as a substitute for one’s father was an unheard-of concept, but everyone understood that, in this case, “reporting” meant serving as a hostage.
For over two decades, following three turnovers of the Grand Governor of Datong and the growing threat from the Wala, Feng Jianping had become the first military officer in the history of Dashing to ascend to the position of Grand Governor. This meant that he not only controlled the political power of the entire Datong Prefecture but also had control over the two hundred thousand soldiers stationed there.
Datong Prefecture was located not far from the capital, a mere three to four days’ journey by fast horse. It was a critical northwest defense line for the Central Plains. If the defenses of Datong were to fail, the Wala would invade, and the northern half of Dashing would be lost. This was why Emperor Zhi relied heavily on Feng Jianping while also fearing him.
Perhaps only a misguided ruler like Chen Zhi would dare entrust the entire political and military power of sixteen states and seventy-seven counties of Datong Prefecture to one man, allowing him to build his own powerbase and exert military authority. However, given Chen Zhi’s track record, nobody was particularly surprised. After all, this was the same ruler who, in the past, had abandoned the seven critical border territories in Liaobei, allowing the enemy to penetrate and conquer.
As such, what Feng Ye was doing was not that shocking in the grander context. Nevertheless, it was excellent news for Yansikong, especially given Feng Ye’s return to the capital.
At this moment, Yansikong was in the Hanlin Academy, listening to the teachings of Yan Zilian alongside Shen Hexuan.
“You two are wise and clear-minded, the pillars of the future of our Dashing. Among the new scholars, I have high hopes for both of you. During the recent Imperial Lecture, neither of you disappointed me.”
Yansikong humbly expressed his gratitude, “Thank you, teacher, for granting us this opportunity. I am greatly honored.”
Shen Hexuan also nodded, saying, “I’m grateful for your guidance, teacher.”
“On the last Imperial Lecture, Shen Hexuan’s lecture was excellent but somewhat dull, which the Emperor didn’t like. On the other hand, Yansikong’s approach, while enjoyable and pleasing to the Emperor, may have lacked the seriousness of lecturing. In my opinion, both can be improved. For the next Imperial Lecture, I recommend that you learn from each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”
They both responded, “Certainly.”
“All right, it’s getting late. You can leave now.”
“Teacher, will you be staying here tonight?” Shen Hexuan asked, “Do you have any official documents pending? I would be glad to stay and assist you.”
“No need. Later, I have to visit a friend. Both of you can go.”
Both students bowed and withdrew from the room.
As they walked through the courtyard, Yansikong remarked, “Shen Xiong, Liao Suiren and his friends invited us to join them for drinks at the Baisheng Building today. I heard that Zhou Moxing has set up an interesting gathering. Would you like to join?”
Shen Hexuan politely replied, “Thank you, Xiongdi, but I have some official work to complete. I will pass.”
Yansikong smiled and said, “In that case, I will go ahead.”
After parting ways, Yansikong made his way to the Baisheng Building, where Liao Sui and others were welcoming guests. When Liao Sui saw him, he approached with a smile and said, “Sikong, did the ‘Three-time Scholar’ reject you again?”
This group of new scholars had given Shen Hexuan, who had consecutively achieved high honors three times, the nickname “Three-time Scholar.” It was not meant as an insult, but rather a reflection of their mixed feelings about his aloof attitude and his refusal to engage in social interactions.
Yansikong shrugged in resignation and said, “Do I even need to say it?”
“But Master Zhou has always wanted to meet this extraordinary three-time scholar. But honestly, I think it’s better if he doesn’t come. It will prevent any unpleasant encounters.”
Yansikong chuckled, “I agree. Let’s go inside.”
Yansikong appreciated Shen Hexuan but couldn’t help but sigh while observing his single-mindedness, endless workload, and lack of social skills. His character was too rigid and devoid of human emotions. Yansikong couldn’t help but feel concerned for him, believing that such a talented individual might face misfortune sooner or later due to their unsuitable qualities for holding official positions.
During the banquet, people naturally brought up the events of Yansikong’s lecture at the Imperial Lecture. They had heard the rumors, asking, “Is it true that you openly criticized the Emperor for his posture during the lecture?”
Yansikong chuckled and replied, “Yes, I said, ‘As a sovereign, one must behave respectfully.'”
Laughter erupted at the table. “He is indeed a unique individual.”
“His knowledge is profound, but his rigid mindset makes him unsuitable for official positions.”
“Absolutely, because of his intransigence and single-minded focus on Confucianism and Mencius, he managed to achieve three consecutive honors. Otherwise…” one scholar praised, “Your talent, Yansikong, is no less impressive than his.”
“That’s right, Yansikong’s poetry and painting skills are truly remarkable.”
“Please, please, I’m flattered. I mainly read unofficial history and miscellaneous texts, which wouldn’t pass in the scholarly world.”
The conversation continued with mutual flattery and wine toasts, creating a lively atmosphere.
Someone mentioned the return of the Crown Prince of Jingyuan, which led to further discussion. “I was informed that the Crown Prince’s carriages have reached the relay stations, and he’s expected to enter the capital tomorrow.”
“I can’t believe it. The Emperor actually entrusted military authority to the Jingyuan Prince. It’s unbelievable.”
“Indeed, who would have thought?”
People had many opinions they rarely expressed publicly, but with some alcohol in their system, they felt more comfortable discussing the matter. “That’s why they brought back the Crown Prince, the only son left for the Jingyuan Prince. By keeping him, they can control the Jingyuan Prince as well. The Emperor is not as unguarded as it seems.”
“I’m worried, though. This Crown Prince is no ordinary person. Haven’t you heard the rumors about him?”
Most of the scholars at the table were recent graduates who hadn’t yet had much exposure to political affairs, so they were curious about what Liao Sui was talking about. They urged him to continue.
Yansikong sipped his wine, smiled, and remained silent.
Liao Sui continued, “This Crown Prince is known as the ‘Little Wolf King.’ He was born and raised in the military.”
“Wow, he must be a formidable military leader.”
“Much more than that,” Zhou Moxing added mysteriously. “It is said he has a natural strength, a robust physique, strong arms, keen eyes, a voice like thunder, thick hair like a wild beast…”
Yansikong couldn’t contain his laughter and ended up spewing out a mouthful of wine.
“Yansikong, what’s wrong?”
Yansikong tried to regain his composure. “The wine… it’s strong.”
“Haha, consider it a punishment for Yansikong to drink alone. Here, let’s all have another.”
After they finished their drinks, they urged Zhou Moxing to continue.
“In any case, the nickname ‘Little Wolf King’ doesn’t only refer to his appearance.”
“I agree; it doesn’t seem to be just about his looks.”
Liao Sui added, “I think the nickname goes beyond his appearance. This Crown Prince is genuinely a military prodigy. Since childhood, he was born and raised in the military.”
“Oh, I see.”
Liao Sui continued, “This young Prince’s nickname, ‘Little Wolf King,’ is not just about his looks. He’s born of a military family, a natural-born warrior. He went into battle at the age of eleven and killed enemies. In the year he turned fourteen, his older brother was wounded in battle, and the Crown Prince led a squad of a hundred elite cavalrymen, charging into enemy lines to slay the chief Wala general. He brought his brother’s body back in one piece, and that’s how he earned his reputation.”
Yansikong felt a hint of sadness and quietly took another sip of wine.
Everyone marveled, “He’s truly a hero since he was young.”
Liao Sui said, “That’s why I say it’s unsettling to have such a person return to the capital as a hostage.”
“Your concerns are well-founded, Liao brother.”
“He’s coming tomorrow? I’d like to see this Crown Prince with my own eyes.”
“Haha, if he looks like the descriptions, the children will be scared.”
Zhou Moxing suddenly brightened and clapped his hands. “I have a proposal.”
“Please, go ahead, Zhou.”
“Baisong Tower is the liveliest place in the city. If the Crown Prince enters the city, he will pass through this street. How about we have a night of revelry, stay up all night, and see the ‘Little Wolf King’ early in the morning right here? What do you all think?”
Liao Sui playfully complained, “Not good, not good. It’s a long night. If Zhou brother doesn’t invite the ladies from Zui Xiang Lou to sing and entertain us, I’m heading home.”
“Hahaha, you rascal.”
Everyone agreed with Zhou’s idea. Zhou Moxing was known for his indulgent lifestyle, and wherever he went, there was always wine, entertainment, and lively company.
In no time, seven or eight beautiful courtesans gracefully entered the room, singing and dancing, making the atmosphere even more intoxicating.
Having drunk too much, Liao Sui draped his arm around Yansikong’s shoulder and teased, “Yansikong, I often invite you to Zui Xiang Lou, but you never go. Now, you have the chance to enjoy yourself here. Although, haha, I must say we’re using borrowed flowers to offer Buddha.”
Yansikong patted Liao Sui’s chest, half in jest, half seriously, and replied, “Liao brother, both of us have entered official service. Privately, we should still be cautious.”
While Liao Sui came from a prominent family and could afford a reputation of indulgence in such places, Yansikong was not as fortunate. He didn’t want to provide anyone with an opportunity to tarnish his reputation.
“Ah, I see. Is it because you work with ‘Three Elements’ daily, and he’s influenced you? Scholars should be both talented and refined, right? Haha!”
People around them teased, “Maybe Yansikong has unique preferences and doesn’t care for women…”
Yansikong smiled and said, “Don’t make fun of me. I’m just a scholar from the countryside, not well-versed in worldly affairs.”
“Haha, that’s not it. I think something’s off. Yansikong is like P’an An in terms of looks. The cosmetics and powders of these women can’t compare to his beauty.”
“That makes sense. Yansikong’s beauty is unmatched. He can choose whom he pleases. So, do others pay him, or does he pay them?”
“Heh heh, Yansikong, maybe it’s your unique taste that doesn’t favor the fairer sex…”
Yansikong smiled, “Don’t tease me, please. I’m just an unsophisticated scholar from the countryside.”
“Sure, sure, Yansikong is a man with distinctive tastes. These mundane cosmetics and powders can’t capture his attention.”
“It’s true. With his striking looks, maybe he’s the one being courted rather than courting others. He’s at a disadvantage! Haha!”
The room was filled with laughter and merriment.
Yansikong had an excellent tolerance for alcohol, and he merely pretended to be intoxicated, his gaze clear and penetrating as ever. He observed the once seemingly virtuous gentlemen now revealing their true colors, feeling a sense of calm as deep as a well.
He indeed had no interest in romantic or physical pleasures, but he was neither attracted to men nor women. For him, such desires were meaningless. He sought something beyond these base desires.
In the middle of the night, some had fallen into drunken stupors, while others had wandered off with the courtesans. There were no lamps lit in the room. Yansikong sat on a soft couch, allowing the early spring breeze to disperse his remaining traces of inebriation. He gazed at the bustling night in the capital beyond the window, lost in thought.
Ten years had passed. He had reverted to his original surname, fabricated a background, as his biological father had instructed. He took the imperial examination at the age of nineteen and achieved exceptional success, becoming the youngest new imperial scholar. Then, he spent a year establishing connections with influential figures, navigating the intricate world of court politics, and earned the recognition of the Prime Minister. He had become known to the Emperor and the court through his lectures on Confucianism and Mencius.
For a newly minted imperial scholar, his life had been relatively smooth. But it was still too slow for his liking. To avoid attracting attention, he didn’t dare to excel in the top three ranks of scholars. However, with his ordinary ranking, he had to overcome fierce competition to gain the favor of discerning officials like Yan Zilian. This endeavor required significant effort and time. His next step was to become a reader for the Emperor or the Crown Prince. If not, it would take him ten or twenty more years to approach the center of power. He couldn’t wait that long, and he wouldn’t allow those who opposed him to live out their lives in peace.
Yansikong finished the drink in his cup and gazed at the dimly lit street. His mind returned to today’s central topic, “Fengye.” He had already investigated Fengye, so he was well aware of the rumors.
But what had become of that person? He couldn’t possibly be as they described, with a head of hair as thick as an animal’s. Yansikong smiled slightly and leaned back on the soft couch, feeling the onset of drowsiness.
Fengye, ten years apart. Ten years had passed since he last saw Fengye as “Yuansikong.”
Yansikong was awakened by someone. He opened his eyes to see Liao Sui’s bloated face in his line of sight. “Yansikong, wake up, the Crown Prince has arrived in the city.”
Yansikong instinctively sat up, but he quickly slowed down his movements, leaning against the windowsill with a headache, hoping that Liao Sui wouldn’t notice his martial arts skills.
“Heh, I’ve got a headache too. After seeing the Crown Prince, I’ll have someone send you home.”
Yansikong shook his head and smiled wryly. “Thank you, Liao brother.”
Most of the people from the previous night’s banquet had awakened. They gathered by the window and watched as the Crown Prince’s procession entered the city.
Inside the capital, unless granted special permission or on official business, no one was allowed to ride horses. However, the person at the front of this procession was riding a horse. He wore a conical hat that obscured his face.
“Wow, the Emperor allowed him to ride a horse into the city.”
As the procession got closer, Yansikong felt his heart race. He stared intently at the man on horseback, hoping to catch a glimpse of his true appearance behind the conical hat.
The man was wearing armor and appeared tall and robust, sitting straight and tall on the horse.
“Heh, he must be hiding his face because he has a face full of animal-like hair.”
“Right, given his stature, he doesn’t look like a seventeen or eighteen-year-old.”
“Could it be that the Crown Prince, with the ‘Little Wolf King,’ is taking lessons from him?”
“Perhaps…”
As the procession passed Baisong Tower, the man at the front suddenly pulled the reins, bringing everything to a halt. His subordinates stopped immediately, displaying their discipline and training.
Both the people on the street and those in Baisong Tower were stunned. The mounted general suddenly lifted his head, turning to look in their direction.
The crowd gasped, and Yansikong’s heart quivered. Under the conical hat, concealed by a black silk mask, only his eyes were visible, sharp and piercing like a wolf’s. In a single glance, it felt as if he could pounce on them and tear them to shreds.
Everyone was breathless, and Yansikong instinctively withdrew his head from the window.
It wasn’t long before the man continued forward, urging his horse with a light pull on the reins. He rode away.
Yansikong snapped out of his shock, his thoughts turning to the first time he had seen Fengye ten years ago.
That eight-year-old boy had been asleep on horseback, drooling without a care in the world. He appeared innocent and endearing, as though nothing else in the world mattered more than the sweet dream he was having.
Ten years, and they had both changed. Yansikong couldn’t help but think: “It’s not the same person, and neither is it a human.” (End of this chapter.)
