My Heart Breaks For The Gentle Second Male Lead Chapter 1: Transmigrating into a Book

“Where are you, Fang Jue?” A hearty male voice came from the other end of the phone.

The sound of rolling luggage wheels followed a young man as he pulled it with his slender hand, moving forward steadily.

Fang Jue, wearing headphones, leisurely strolled along the sidewalk, surrounded by a continuous flow of vehicles and hurried pedestrians. His relaxed demeanor seemed somewhat out of place in the bustling crowd.

Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, casting a light golden hue on his loose white hoodie, making his complexion even paler. Long lashes cast irregular shadows on his eyelids, trembling with the movement of his blinking.

If a photography enthusiast happened by, they would notice the striking contrast in this scene and couldn’t resist snapping a photo.

After listening to the voice message, Fang Jue stopped in his tracks and sent his location on WeChat. “Sent it to you. Take a look.”

“Oh! Got it, got it! Just keep walking a few more steps forward, there’s a bus stop over there. Wait for me there for a few minutes, I’ll be there soon.”

“A bus stop?” Fang Jue paused for a moment, unconsciously exerting force on the handle of his luggage.

The other person continued to apologize, “I’m really sorry. I was supposed to pick you up directly outside the station, but something came up unexpectedly, leaving you to drag your luggage around alone. But don’t worry, when I say a few minutes, I mean it!”

“What’s there to apologize for? It was my choice to explore a bit first,” Fang Jue chuckled, “It’s more of a bother for you to come pick me up.”

Fang Jue couldn’t help but feel a bit exasperated at his reaction to hearing “bus stop.” However, on second thought, he couldn’t entirely blame himself. Anyone who had been hit by a truck and landed in a similar place would have some psychological reservations about such locations.

The only difference was that, after being hit by that truck, he had somehow ended up in a different world. However, unlike the fantasy worlds depicted in those anime series, he hadn’t arrived in a world with any fantastical elements. Instead, he had arrived in the world from the book.

On the day of his departure from school, Fang Jue was the last one to leave the dormitory.

In the second semester of their senior year, they had no plans to return to school, so they had packed everything exceptionally neatly.

Fang Jue wasn’t in a hurry. Going back home didn’t hold much appeal for him. Although his uncle wasn’t strict about his living arrangements, it still emphasized his outsider status.

While packing his books, he suddenly noticed one with a particularly bright spine that stood out among the others. He pulled it out and saw that the boldly colored cover bore some flashy characters — “The Outrageous Young Master’s Sweetheart.”

After inquiring, he learned that it belonged to one of his cousins, who somehow ended up giving it to him since she had already finished reading it and had no use for it.

Fang Jue found himself bored on the way home, so he started reading the book. Unexpectedly, as he reached the last few pages at a bus stop, he heard a series of increasingly loud shouts approaching from a distance.

An out-of-control truck was careening straight towards him.

Amidst the screams and shouts around him, Fang Jue felt his thoughts scatter, and when he woke up, he had transmigrated.

He had transmigrated into the very same ancient romance novel he had been reading just a moment before the accident.

Yes, it wasn’t a dream, as he initially thought, especially when his parents mentioned the name of Yucheng University.

Yucheng University — one of the top universities in this world, prominently featured in the novel as the place where the perfect second male lead studied.

After his transmigration, he became a prospective university student who had just received an admission letter to Yucheng University.

Suddenly, he was four years younger. Not bad, not bad, Fang Jue comforted himself.

Currently, during the long summer vacation after the college entrance exams, his parents were worried that he’d get bored at home, so they suggested he come to Yucheng early to explore the place where he would spend the next four years. Fortunately, Fang Jue’s mother had a friend in Yucheng, so arranging a place to stay for a few days was no problem.

The phone call he had just received was from their son, Xu Ling.

Fang Jue looked at the map navigation and slowly walked forward. It was summertime, his clothes were thin, and the luggage wasn’t heavy, so it was an easy stroll.

Arriving at the bus stop, Xu Ling hadn’t arrived yet, so Fang Jue stood there, gazing absentmindedly at the leaves of the plane trees overhead.

After what had happened in his previous life, he wasn’t afraid to come to a bus stop, but just to be safe, he didn’t want to lower his head to play with his phone again.

At this moment, he was thinking about something else.

In the novel, the second male lead, Yan Yunli, appeared gentle and courteous on the surface but was emotionally distant and aloof. No one could truly understand his inner world except for the female lead. Even when problems arose in the relationship between the male and female leads, he only cared about the female lead’s happiness and helped them reconcile.

However, this deeply affectionate second male lead, in the end, fell into a tragic fate orchestrated by the jealous male lead, ending up with his family destroyed and impoverished.

Since the second male lead from the novel now happened to be attending the same university as him, Fang Jue wondered if he could help him avoid that tragic ending. But then he chuckled at himself for worrying about others when he hadn’t even figured out his own situation yet.

Moreover, he didn’t even know at which point in the story he had transmigrated. What if the story had already concluded?

Unbeknownst to Fang Jue, as he was lost in his thoughts, two girls nearby were sneakily observing him, exchanging glances and frantically typing on their phones.

If someone perceptive had witnessed this, they would know what the girls’ next move was going to be.

A short-haired girl hastily pushed her long-haired friend, seemingly urging her to approach. The long-haired girl hesitated for a moment and was about to step forward when another figure beat her to it.

Fang Jue felt the presence of someone beside him but didn’t pay much attention until a warm and calm voice reached his ears.

“Your hand seems to be injured. I have a band-aid. Let me help you with that.”

Fang Jue hesitated for a moment before realizing the person was speaking to him. When he raised his hand, he noticed a few bloodstains on the back, and it was still bleeding.

Upon careful recollection, he remembered that he had accidentally grazed his hand while retrieving his luggage earlier. It had stung a bit at the time, but he didn’t think it was a big deal. However, it seemed the skin had broken, and it looked somewhat serious now.

Fang Jue smiled and was about to express his thanks when he made eye contact with the person, and his words got stuck in his throat.

The person appeared to be around his age, wearing a mask that concealed most of their face, leaving only a pair of captivating eyes visible.

The eye color was deep, devoid of emotion, and everything seemed calm, as if nothing could truly affect them. Fang Jue was reminded of a tranquil pool hidden in a deep forest, both serene and accommodating, yet carrying an air of mystery and distance due to its isolation from the world.

It was contradictory but strangely harmonious.

“Thank you,” Fang Jue finally managed to say his gratitude, albeit two seconds later.

The person nodded in acknowledgment and didn’t say much.

As Fang Jue was about to apply the band-aid, a car pulled up ahead, honking its horn a couple of times to get his attention.

Fang Jue raised his head and saw the car window slowly rolling down. Xu Ling was sitting in the driver’s seat, motioning for him to get in.

Fang Jue didn’t want to block the traffic behind, so he quickly stored his luggage and closed the door.

Xu Ling started the car. “Alright, let’s go!”

Xu Ling’s mother was a friend of Fang Jue’s mother, but they lived in different cities, so they didn’t meet often. Fang Jue had some vague memories of them, but everything related to his identity in this world felt shrouded in a fog, making it hard to see clearly.

Fang Jue had been wondering why everyone in this world was so different from the one he knew, except for his parents.

He had come to the conclusion that it might be due to some butterfly effect caused by his transmigration.

When in doubt, blame the butterfly effect!

“We must have met when we were kids, right?” Xu Ling initiated the conversation. “But honestly, if I try to remember the details, I can’t recall.”

Fang Jue, while applying the band-aid, jokingly responded, “Me too. If Auntie hadn’t sent me your photo, I wouldn’t have recognized our handsome ‘Xu-ge’!”

“Oh, what’s wrong? Is your hand bleeding?” Xu Ling noticed Fang Jue’s hand in his peripheral vision.

“It’s nothing, just a small cut,” Fang Jue replied nonchalantly.

Seeing that it was a minor issue, Xu Ling teased him, “Good thing it’s not your face that got hurt. We can’t afford to damage such a handsome face; otherwise, many girls would be heartbroken.”

“It’s not that exaggerated,” Fang Jue didn’t consider himself particularly good-looking and thought Xu Ling was just teasing him.

“When you were putting away your luggage, I was watching! Those two girls waiting for the bus next to you were staring at you the whole time. Have you exchanged WeChat contacts with them?” Xu Ling didn’t seem to believe Fang Jue.

Fang Jue tried to recall but couldn’t remember, and he asked in confusion, “What girls?”

“The ones standing right next to you! You didn’t notice them?” Xu Ling was surprised. Even if they hadn’t talked, Fang Jue should have noticed them.

Fang Jue nodded. He had been lost in thought and hadn’t paid attention to the people around him.

Xu Ling was still astonished and muttered to himself, “What were you thinking about?”

Hearing Xu Ling’s words, Fang Jue suddenly remembered the young man from earlier. Those beautiful eyes couldn’t be forgotten, and he was likely even more handsome with his full face visible.

Truly, it was a world of fiction; even random passersby were such handsome men.

Fang Jue, the ‘transmigrator,’ mused on this fact.

Meanwhile, back at the bus stop, Yann Shuyao returned.

“Brother! What are you looking at? You didn’t just miss the bus, did you?” Yann Shuyao sipped her bubble tea and peered ahead.

“No,” Yan Yunli opened a bus tracking app and checked the time. “The next one will arrive in three minutes.”

“That’s soon enough. I’m already looking forward to Auntie’s cooking! Charge ahead!” Yann Shuyao’s eyes sparkled at the thought of food.

The bus arrived shortly after, and Yann Shuyao boarded first.

Yan Yunli followed, but before getting on the bus, he glanced in the direction where Fang Jue had left.

Sometimes, people can share a subtle connection, like a moment when you realize that something from your dreams aligns with reality.

This feeling was delicate, akin to a spider’s silk, only evident when the lighting was right. It attempted to grasp it, but one could only feel its remnants after it had faded away. Nonetheless, it had indeed existed for a fleeting moment.
