My Heart Breaks For The Gentle Second Male Lead Chapter 3: Confirmation

“Uh, you…you…” Fang Jue couldn’t control his expression, staring at him for a moment, unable to speak.

Yan Yunli also paused for a moment. He remembered this guy, considering that he had initiated a conversation with him at the bus stop for no apparent reason. He wasn’t the type to be overly friendly, and even he found his actions a bit strange at the time.

However, Yan Yunli didn’t react as strongly as Fang Jue. He simply nodded politely and said, “Hello, I’m Yan Yunli, bed number 3.”

Being interrupted by Yan Yunli’s introduction, Fang Jue realized that he was being impolite, as if he didn’t welcome the newcomer. He quickly controlled his surprise and put on a more genuine smile, saying, “Hey, welcome, Yan…wait, Yan what?!”

While attempting to repeat his new roommate’s name, Fang Jue suddenly realized something was wrong.

Yan Yunli?! Wasn’t that the name of the male lead in the novel?

Wait, what if it’s a case of homonyms?

Seeing Fang Jue’s reaction, Yan Yunli thought he might not have remembered his name, so he patiently repeated it, “Yan Yunli, Yun from ‘Yun’ in ‘cloud,’ and Liang from ‘separation.'”

Yan Yunli didn’t use any uncommon words or phrases to show off his literary prowess, just simple words that firmly anchored his name.

Indeed, his name was the same as the male lead’s.

Fang Jue’s heart began to race, but he maintained a calm demeanor on the surface. He casually asked, “I thought none of you guys would be coming these days. I was preparing to hold down the fort by myself. Are you a local?”

Yan Yunli replied, “Yes, I’m from nearby.”

Same name, and both are locals! Fang Jue’s speculative thoughts seemed to be gaining more credibility.

However, he couldn’t just ask this new acquaintance if he knew someone named Yan Shuyao and if he was involved in setting her up with her admirers. If he did, he’d likely be regarded as either crazy or a stalker.

And then, the news would spread like wildfire, leading to online ridicule and social isolation. Soon, everyone would know that there was a mentally unstable person in this year’s freshman class.

Yikes…

Yan Yunli was unaware of Fang Jue’s internal turmoil and merely observed Fang Jue’s changing expressions, finding them quite amusing.

He came to his own desk, removed his mask, and acted as though he hadn’t noticed Fang Jue’s hesitation. He turned to him and asked, “I still don’t know your name. What’s your name?”

Fang Jue, who had been lost in his thoughts, finally returned to reality. He had been chatting with this guy for a while, and he couldn’t afford to appear impolite, as if he didn’t want to be friends.

“Sorry, I got so excited when I saw you that I forgot to introduce myself,” Fang Jue said with a sheepish smile. “I’m Fang Jue. Fang from ‘square’ and Jue from ‘perceive.'”

Fang Jue had an eye for aesthetics. When he encountered Yan Yunli at the bus stop before, he could tell from his eyes alone that he must be very good-looking. He thought he had prepared himself mentally for this, but seeing Yan Yunli unveil his entire face, he was still stunned.

Fang Jue was now looking at Yan Yunli, waiting for his response. With his bangs partially covering his eyebrows, long eyelashes framing his calm and emotionless eyes, a high and defined nose bridge, and a sharp and clear jawline, it was easy to see how his side profile could make anyone’s heart skip a beat.

In that moment, Fang Jue’s heart raced like thunder. There was no need for further confirmation; this was undoubtedly the character from the novel.

What was it they said about searching for someone in a crowd and then suddenly realizing they were right beside you?

Seeing that Yan Yunli was still looking at him, Fang Jue suddenly felt uneasy and suspected that he had shown too much excitement, accidentally blurting out his inner thoughts. He asked nervously, “What’s wrong?”

Yan Yunli shook his head gently and asked, “Nothing much, just wanted to ask your name. Is it taken from the line ‘连雨不知春去,一晴方觉夏深’ (Lianyu bu zhi chun qu, yi qing fang jue xia shen)?”

Fang Jue apparently didn’t expect that to be his focus and waved his hand, saying, “Somebody asked me that before, and while it’s indeed taken from there, it’s not related to that.”

Yan Yunli remained silent, waiting quietly for him to continue.

Seeing that there was dust on the table and he couldn’t put down his bag on his back, Fang Jue handed him the remaining half of the wet wipes and said, “Because my parents wanted me to experience this world fully, they gave me this name. I’m almost done packing; you can use these.”

The hand holding the wet wipes was very beautiful, clean and pleasing to the eye. Yan Yunli thanked him and started wiping the table.

After Fang Jue had put away his clothes, he couldn’t stand seeing Yan Yunli busy alone, so he offered to help.

While Yan Yunli was making the bed, Fang Jue hesitated but eventually asked, “Yan Yunli, didn’t we meet not too long ago?”

Although he was quite certain that Yan Yunli was the same person he had met before, he couldn’t be sure if Yan Yunli remembered him.

“Yes, we did,” Yan Yunli’s voice came from above, “It was at the bus stop.”

Hearing this, Fang Jue became excited, “You remember me! So, this is our second meeting, and we’ve become roommates by chance. Fate is truly amazing.”

Yan Yunli might not have known what to say, only responding with a word or two when Fang Jue asked him, but when Fang Jue inquired, he answered willingly.

And so, Fang Jue managed to extract some key information from Yan Yunli, especially about the fact that he was admitted to the university through a competition, solidifying his identity as the “male lead of a novel.”

Even though Yan Yunli didn’t exactly match the gentle image of the novel’s male lead this time, Fang Jue admitted that their first encounter, where Yan Yunli had proactively given him a band-aid, had left a good first impression.

Furthermore, during this brief conversation, Yan Yunli may not have been talkative, but he showed no signs of impatience with Fang Jue’s questions. Perhaps the known character setting also played a role, as Fang Jue did feel a hint of tenderness from him.

Fang Jue understood that at the beginning of the school year, everyone was still getting to know each other, and it was common to put on a bit of a façade. That was fine; he would be the one to break the ice!

By the time Yan Yunli finished packing, it was time for dinner. Fang Jue asked, “Roommate, want to go out for a meal?”

“Yes, let’s go.”

Yan Yunli was washing his hands, and the rushing water outside on the balcony drowned out most of his words, but Fang Jue managed to hear what he said.

“Shall we eat at the cafeteria or go out?” Fang Jue felt a sense of novelty about this school and wanted to see everything along the way.

Yan Yunli followed behind, observing all of Fang Jue’s actions.

“How about some braised chicken? There’s a good restaurant nearby,” Yan Yunli suggested when he heard Fang Jue’s question.

“Roommate, that sounds good!” Fang Jue was surprised. “I didn’t expect you to be so well-informed, even knowing which restaurant is good.”

Yan Yunli shook his head. “No, I ate there once before when I was in this area.”

“You really are a local,” Fang Jue chuckled, patting his shoulder. When he noticed Yan Yunli might not like being touched, he retracted his hand. “How about being my tour guide on weekends and taking me to eat delicious food?”

“Sure,” Yan Yunli replied calmly.

Fang Jue didn’t mind; he didn’t want to rush things with someone he had just met.

As the senior students hadn’t returned yet, and it was the first day of registration for new students, the restaurants outside weren’t crowded yet. Each restaurant still had a few empty tables.

After the food was served, Fang Jue took a bite and couldn’t help but praise the delicious taste. He thought that Yan Yunli’s taste in food was similar to his own, making them potential meal buddies, which was practical for someone who enjoyed eating.

Fang Jue liked using his phone while eating, but only when he was alone. He didn’t want to distract Yan Yunli, so he focused on eating instead.

After finishing their meal, Fang Jue took out his phone and asked, “Yan Yunli, do you have any packages to pick up? I can go to the delivery center. Do you want to go back first?”

Yan Yunli stood up and replied, “Let’s go together. I also have a package.”

“Alright, you wait outside while I settle the bill,” Fang Jue said.

“How much?” Yan Yunli asked as soon as they stepped outside.

Fang Jue mentioned the amount, and Yan Yunli quickly transferred the money to him.

Receiving the payment, Fang Jue became more certain of his thoughts. Yan Yunli was a good roommate, willing to share expenses. Even if he had approached him to avoid a bad outcome, Yan Yunli was still a friend worth getting to know.

The two of them soon arrived at the delivery center. The school had set up three delivery collection points to ensure that students in each area didn’t have to travel far to pick up their packages.

Several delivery services were clustered together, and the place was crowded with people. It took them a while to collect their packages.

Back in their dorm room, Fang Jue unpacked their packages one by one. When he opened a small box and saw the item’s name on it, he looked up to find Yan Yunli.

“Yan Yunli,” he leaned against the chair’s backrest and asked, “Are you strict about sleeping conditions? Can there be a little bit of dim light? I’m used to having a night light on while sleeping. If it bothers you, we can go buy an eye mask later, and I’ll pay.”

Their beds were next to each other, and even though they had bed curtains, some light could still seep through.

Yan Yunli shook his head. “It’s fine. You can use it.”

“Fang Jue, you’re such a good person,” Fang Jue exaggeratedly wiped away tears, pretending to be moved.

After resting for a while, in the evening, the two of them went for a walk around the campus to familiarize themselves with the layout. This way, they wouldn’t get lost in the future.

After their walk, they went to another restaurant for dinner. When they finished, it was getting dark, and the streetlights illuminated their path.

Returning to their dorm room under the dimly lit corridor, they finished getting ready for bed and bid each other goodnight before getting into their respective beds.

Fang Jue had the habit of lying down and using his phone for a while before sleeping. Today, after moving luggage to the fifth floor and running around all day, he hadn’t had much time to check his phone. He had only replied to a few important messages.

Now that he had some free time, he opened a discussion forum.

Upon opening the forum, he noticed a hot post on the front page with several pages of replies.

The title was straightforward:

“These New Guys Are Way Too Handsome, Right?”

Clicking into the post, the original poster asked:

“Does anyone know this freshman? I saw him today while volunteering, and he looks so handsome, like he’s in a different league from everyone else. Does anyone know if he has a partner? If not, I’m going for it!”

Below the text, there was a blurry sneakily taken picture.

Perhaps the person who took the photo was nervous, as it was slightly blurry, but it didn’t diminish the person’s good looks. It almost resembled an artistic photo with an atmosphere.

Initially, the replies were polarized, with some praising his handsomeness and others questioning if the blurry picture with a mask made people imagine things that weren’t there.

However, after several pages of discussion, some people began sharing clearer photos. These included close-ups from different angles and even pictures of him dining with others.

With these clear, full-face photos, opinions became unanimous, but the key question remained unanswered.

Did this freshman guy have a partner? After all, it wasn’t just about asking if he had a girlfriend; they had to inquire about a boyfriend as well.

Fang Jue silently sighed. He knew that as soon as Yan Yunli appeared, this kind of situation would unfold.

As he continued scrolling, he eventually saw a comment that made him pause.

“Since you’re all discussing this handsome guy, I’ll move aside. Shy.jpg”

Fang Jue: Huh? Why is he mentioned here too?
