My Heart Breaks For The Gentle Second Male Lead Chapter 7: Clubs

Title: “I Broke My Heart for the Gentle Second Male Lead”

Author: Tea Dregs

After the military training, university life was starting to settle in. During the beginning of the semester, there were various orientation events and campus lectures happening one after another.

While listening to the college leaders’ speeches, Fang Jue sent a message to Yan Yunli.

【Fang Jue: Roommate, what should we eat later? *Drooling*.jpg】

At this moment, it was the scheduled time for the opening lecture, and most colleges were receiving their freshmen in different locations, all heading towards the same goal.

Since Yan Yunli didn’t usually check his phone much, Fang Jue thought he would have to wait until the lectures were over to get a response. However, to his surprise, just a minute after sending the message, his screen lit up.

A WeChat notification popped up: “You have a new message.”

Fang Jue thought, “Can’t be this quick, it must be someone else.”

But when he casually opened it, it was indeed a reply from Yan Yunli.

【Yan Yunli: Do you have any cravings?】

Surprise was indeed a cause for joy, but when you didn’t expect a response, and after consoling yourself, you received one, it felt like a double surprise of lost and found.

Fang Jue didn’t reply immediately. He wanted to chat for a bit first:

【Fang Jue: Are you on your phone right now?】

But as he said that, he realized it wasn’t right. Yan Yunli would take any topic seriously, so it couldn’t be that he was playing with his phone. It must have been a coincidence with the timing.

Before he could correct himself and offer an explanation, Yan Yunli’s side showed “Typing…”

Fang Jue abandoned that idea and waited quietly.

【Yan Yunli: No, my phone was nearby, and I saw your message, so I replied.】

Fang Jue couldn’t help but smile at his quick response and teased him:

【Fang Jue: Yunli, you replied in seconds. I need to screenshot this for commemoration~】

Knowing that Yan Yunli wouldn’t think he was being sarcastic, Fang Jue sent the message without any hesitation, actually looking forward to how he would respond.

During military training, he had already become acquainted with Shen Liu. This time, they happened to have seats next to each other, so Fang Jue went over to sit with them.

Shen Liu had noticed Fang Jue’s unusual behavior earlier, and now seeing him so cheerful, he couldn’t help but nudge Fang Jue’s elbow.

“Who are you texting? You’re smiling like that. Don’t tell me you have a girlfriend? My latest information says you’re single; is there a mistake?” Shen Liu stroked his chin, puzzled.

Fang Jue glanced at him. “Girlfriend? I’m just messaging my roommate.”

Shen Liu clicked his tongue. “Messaging your roommate and smiling like this? I don’t believe—”

Fang Jue thought about it and decided to enjoy himself. “It’s different. He replied to me in seconds.”

“Nowadays, who isn’t glued to their phones every day?” Shen Liu continued, “Especially with this hypnotic situation, what else is there to do besides using your phone?”

Fang Jue felt that Shen Liu couldn’t understand the situation, so he shook his head and said, “Ah, you wouldn’t understand…”

Shen Liu gave him a strange look but didn’t press further. He had already relaxed his guard, knowing that Fang Jue was indeed quick to respond to messages. The rest didn’t matter to him.

On the other side, Yan Yunli was looking at Fang Jue’s messages, and the tilde at the end of his sentence made him imagine Fang Jue’s tone of voice.

Last time, he didn’t check his phone in time, which led to Fang Jue being dragged onto the stage for a performance. That made him feel guilty. Or perhaps, it wasn’t just about the performance; it was the disappointment Fang Jue felt when he didn’t respond promptly that bothered him more.

This time, he did something unusual—he didn’t put his phone in his bag; instead, he kept it nearby and turned on the notification light for new messages. He didn’t know how to respond to Fang Jue’s teasing, so he just said:

【Yan Yunli: I’ll always reply quickly to you from now on.】

When Fang Jue received the message, his lips involuntarily curled up even higher than before.

Shen Liu, who had just relaxed, now felt uneasy again.

The two of them started exchanging messages now and then. Yan Yunli did indeed keep his promise, responding almost instantly to every message.

Fang Jue, feeling like he was receiving special treatment, also had a sense of responsibility to keep Yan Yunli from straying into the complicated love triangle that he was so afraid of.

During military training, Fang Jue and Yan Yunli had become close friends. Now that they were attending the same university, they had naturally chosen to sit together at the opening lecture.

When the lecture ended, Fang Jue saw a new message from Yan Yunli.

【Yan Yunli: I’m waiting for you downstairs.】

As soon as the lecture ended, Fang Jue grabbed his bag and rushed out, surprising Shen Liu with his speed.

As Fang Jue and Yan Yunli grew closer, Fang Jue had stopped caring about superficial matters. During their meal, he took out his phone and read a few news articles.

Fang Jue ate slightly faster than Yan Yunli. Yan Yunli always savored his meals, and he could eat even at a street stall as if he were in a high-end restaurant. It was the kind of place that required membership to enter. Yet his actions were so natural that they didn’t annoy people; instead, they found him captivating.

Suddenly, a message came in from someone Fang Jue hadn’t been in contact with much lately: Xu Ling.

“Hmm?” Fang Jue was curious and opened the message.

He knew that Xu Ling held several positions in different organizations and was quite active. These past few days, he hadn’t wanted to bother him. Was he done being busy now?

【Xu Ling: Fang Jue, in a couple of days, there will be a club recruitment event on the square. Will you come? Our photography club will be there. How about considering joining our club?】

Yan Yunli was intrigued by Fang Jue’s tone when he put his phone down. He asked, “What’s going on?”

“Nothing,” Fang Jue served himself half a bowl of egg drop soup, “Xu Ling just asked me if I want to attend the club recruitment event.”

Fang Jue added, “Xu Ling was the one who came to pick me up when we first met. Remember?”

Yan Yunli nodded. “I remember. Is he also from our school?”

“Yeah,” Fang Jue leaned forward, his hands resting on the edge of the table as he asked Yan Yunli, “So, what do you think? Want to go with me to check it out?”

Yan Yunli, who generally didn’t like crowded places, was about to decline. But when

he saw Fang Jue’s excited and hopeful expression, he changed his mind. “Sure, I’ll go with you.”

Going once wouldn’t hurt, and he had no intention of joining any clubs.

Fang Jue smiled, and if it weren’t for the table separating them, he would have hugged Yan Yunli tightly.

He knew that Yan Yunli had a dangerous path ahead. That crazy male lead from the book could be lurking anywhere, waiting for the right moment. He feared that if he didn’t keep an eye on Yan Yunli, he might get entangled in the drama between the male and female leads.

At this moment, Fang Jue had an inexplicable feeling of being a parent, always worrying about Yan Yunli’s well-being.

Fang Jue didn’t forget the ending of Yan Yunli’s book. He was still in a precarious situation, with that neurotic male lead somewhere out there. Fang Jue was worried that if he let his guard down, Yan Yunli might get caught up in the entanglement between the male and female leads.

Now, Fang Jue felt like he was taking care of a son, always concerned about keeping him on the right path.

The day of the club recruitment event arrived quickly. To prevent any last-minute changes, Xu Ling had been sending Fang Jue messages since early morning, enthusiastically describing all the club’s activities.

Fang Jue prepared himself and waited at the door for Xu Ling’s message, assuring him that he would definitely attend.

Yan Yunli came out shortly after. “Let’s go.”

Fang Jue observed Yan Yunli and couldn’t help but feel some pressure.

His roommate, who was always handsome, would surely attract the attention of many clubs. Fang Jue needed to protect Yan Yunli, or he might end up getting recruited by the senior students.

Fang Jue didn’t say anything but patted Yan Yunli on the shoulder.

Don’t worry, my good buddy. You’re responsible for being handsome, and I’ll take care of the rest.

When they arrived at the event, Fang Jue wanted to find Xu Ling first. He led Yan Yunli through the sea of club booths. Along the way, they were approached and recommended by various clubs.

But Xu Ling spotted them first and waved at Fang Jue.

Seeing two people who seemed to be uninterested in the clubs, the several club members who were with Xu Ling were quite excited. If they managed to recruit them, it would be a great boost for their club! Two birds with one stone!

Fang Jue briefly introduced Yan Yunli to Xu Ling and quickly intervened before Xu Ling could try to convince Yan Yunli. “My roommate won’t be joining any clubs, so there’s no need to persuade him.”

“Right, roommate?” Fang Jue confirmed with Yan Yunli.

Yan Yunli nodded in agreement.

Seeing that Yan Yunli wasn’t showing much interest in their recruitment, Xu Ling reluctantly withdrew his gaze. However, he immediately redirected his efforts. “Well then, Fang Jue, why don’t you join? Let me tell you, joining our photography club is definitely worth it…”

Xu Ling kept talking enthusiastically.

Fang Jue did feel a bit tempted. He had some previous experience with photography, and picking it up again might not be a bad idea.

Seeing Fang Jue wavering, Xu Ling didn’t give up and pushed the club membership form toward him. “Fang Jue, just fill out this form, and you’ll be a member of our club!”

Fang Jue didn’t refuse this time and bent over to start filling out the form.

As soon as he began writing, he felt a pair of eyes locked onto his back. It wasn’t a coincidental gaze; it felt rather intense, making him uncomfortable.

When he turned his head, that peculiar sensation disappeared.

Yan Yunli, who had followed Fang Jue’s gaze, asked, “What’s wrong?”

Fang Jue smiled and the cold feeling in his eyes dissipated. He was back to his usual self. “It’s nothing, probably just a figment of my imagination.”

Yan Yunli withdrew his gaze without saying anything, but he looked thoughtful, watching the tip of Fang Jue’s pen move as he filled out the form.

After Fang Jue and Yan Yunli left, Xu Ling was in high spirits and eagerly described how he used his persuasive skills to convince Fang Jue to consider joining the photography club to the other members.

As he spoke, another male student approached. He wore glasses with gold rims and had a gentle smile on his face. He glanced in the direction Fang Jue and Yan Yunli had left, and his eyes were full of determination. “Excuse me, is filling out this form enough to join a club?”
